How it Works

Consistent with the other major airline alliances, Star Alliance itself does not host an individual frequent flyer program.

To achieve Star Alliance status, members must first accrue status through their respective partner airline of choice. Once this is achieved, an equivalent Star Alliance tier status is issued (see “Status Equivalents” below).

Miles earned through multiple different airline programs cannot be transferred or combined to reach the designation for Star Alliance status.

That being said, passengers traveling on eligible flights operated by Star Alliance member airlines will accrue miles/points which can be redeemed across the entire Star Alliance network.

Status Levels

Benefits

Essentially, the purpose of Star Alliance status levels is to translate elite status benefits across partner airlines. For example, if you fly on United Airlines and have the equivalent of Star Alliance Gold, you should be able to get perks such as extra baggage when flying on Lufthansa or any other Star Alliance partner.

Tier Breakdown

Star Alliance Silver

When your respective tier status is equivalent to Star Alliance Silver, you may take advantage of the following benefits, no matter which Star Alliance airline you are flying or cabin class you’re assigned.

Priority on Waitlists and When on Standby (Where Offered)

  • This allows those with status to move ahead of other non-status flyers on reservation lists and standby lists, making it more likely to be granted a seat on the flight in question, except when flying on an award ticket.

Star Alliance Gold

When your respective tier status is equivalent to Star Alliance Gold, you may take advantage of the following benefits, no matter which Star Alliance airline you are flying or cabin class you’re assigned.

Priority on Waitlists and When on Standby (Where Offered)

  • This allows those with status to move ahead of other non-status flyers on reservation lists and standby lists, making it more likely to be granted a seat on the flight in question, except when flying on an award ticket.

Access to Priority Check-In Counters

  • This can significantly expedite the time spent in line/at the airport ticket counter.

Access to Priority Boarding

  • Star Alliance Gold members board along with First and Business Class passengers (where offered).

Extra Baggage Allowance*

  • Using the “weight” concept, Star Alliance Gold members are eligible for an additional 44 pounds (20 kg.) baggage weight.
  • Using the “piece” concept, Star Alliance Gold members are eligible for 1 extra piece of luggage.

* Exclusions apply, including intra-Europe “Light” fares from Lufthansa, Austrian, and SWISS; “Check&Go” fares from Brussels Airlines, and “Go light” fares from “SAS”. Also, Air New Zealand’s “Seat” fares are ineligible for extra baggage allowance.

Priority Baggage Handling

  • This ensures Star Alliance Gold member baggage is among the first on the belt from aircraft to carousel when traveling on any cabin on any eligible Star Alliance flight.

Access to Over 1,100 Airport Lounges (When You Fly on a Member Airline Flight)*

  • This includes premium first class, business, and frequent flyer lounges, regardless of service class flown at the time of travel, for you and 1 guest traveling on the same flight.

* Exceptions apply.

Access to Priority Security Lanes (At Select Airports, for Select Carriers)

  • Star Alliance Gold Track can significantly decrease security wait times.
  • Restrictions and local agreements cause significant variations in the ability to utilize this benefit. More information is available here.

Access to Priority Immigration Lanes (At Select Airports, for Select Carriers)

  • Star Alliance Gold Track can significantly decrease immigration/customs wait times.
  • Restrictions and local agreements cause significant variations in the ability to utilize this benefit. More information is available here.

I need to know what is the exact weight of the extra baggage for the business class on Lufthansa from Orlando International airport to Cairo international airport?

Christine Krzyszton

January 01, 2019

Hello Medhat. Generally, business class travelers can bring 2 bags each weighing up to 32 kg (70lbs). You can access Lufthansa’s baggage limits via this link. https://mobile.lufthansa.com/bag/rules_post.jsp or call them directly at 800-645-3880 to confirm.

I am flying Turkish Airlines from D.C. to Istanbul in business class, and connecting from there on a Turkish flight in economy to New Delhi. I am a star alliance gold member. What is my exact baggage allowance? Can I check in two bags through from DC to Delhi?

Erin Miller

March 12, 2019

Hey Ashna, the Star Alliance website states that as a Gold Member: “You can take an extra 20 kg (44 pounds) where the weight concept applies or an extra piece where the piece concept applies.”

Since Turkish Airlines Elite & Elite Plus are both technically equivalent to Star Alliance Gold, their information is a bit tricky in that Elite is allowed 20k and Elite Plus 25k where weight applies and both allow for an extra piece where the piece concept applies.

This is made more complicated in that you’re flying both business and economy. Usually, when this is the case, you’re subject to the lesser fare’s policies… but we can’t confirm 100% since we aren’t Star Alliance OR Turkish Airlines.

If you’re at all nervous or unsure, we suggest calling Turkish Airlines customer service (if you’re calling from the U.S. 1 800 874 8875). Hope this helps!

March 31, 2019

In January we purchased tickets at http://www.turkishairlines.com. A couple of weeks ago Turkish Airlines (TA) disrupted the Houston to Istanbul leg of our trip. We have spoken to TA customer representatives about 12 times. We have sent emails. TA has done nothing. We are now 5 days from the scheduled departure with NO resolution. This is the worst treatment we have EVER received. Lee Cooper (XXX) XXX-XXXX.

Erin Miller

April 01, 2019

Hi Lee, we’re sorry to hear you’re having issues but please be advised we are not affiliated with Turkish Airlines in any way. We’re simply a website that produces content on award travel and related topics. What type of disruption was/is it? It’s possible you’ll be eligible for compensation of some sort if they don’t resolve prior to your flight.

That being said, some customers have reached out to the airlines via Social Media, especially Twitter… when people voice a concern on such a public platform, this seems to grab the airline’s attention… not sure if Turkish Airlines is the same???

Francis Ali Osman

April 02, 2019

I am a United Airlines Platinum member with Star Alliance Gold status. I get an automatic seat upgrade to Economy Plus when I travel on United Airlines. Because of my Star Alliance Gold Status, am I entitled to a similar upgrade on other Star Alliance airline partners?

Erin Miller

April 02, 2019

Hi Francis, according to the Star Alliance Website, Star Alliance Gold Status gives the benefit of a “Priority Reservations Waitlist” on Star Alliance airlines. Specifically, this is what’s stated:

“If seats in your desired class of service are not available, your status gives you higher priority on the waitlist when a reservation is possible, except when you are traveling on an award ticket. Please note that Priority Reservations Waitlist is subject to individual member carrier’s policy and legal regulations.”

Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi, I had a question. I do a lot of domestic travel with United, hence my premier 1K MileagePlus status. However, I’m not elegible to use the United club when flying domestic with them, so my question is, if I were to book a flight with United, using my MileagePlus account for mileage accruals purposes, could I potentially go to the United club and show them my ANA platinum membership card, since I have that, and would they allow me to go in? Or would they refuse because my boarding pass would reflect my MileagePlus only? Thank you!

Christine Krzyszton

June 17, 2019

Hello Pedro. I have used my ANA Platinum membership card to enter the United Club at Chicago O’hare when flying on a United ticket domestically. My United MileagePlus number was on the boarding pass. I hope this data point helps.

What is “Star Alliance Platinum” under Egypt Air Plus Platinum equivalent? I thought Star Alliance only had Silver and Gold Tiers.

Stephen Au

July 21, 2019

Hi Roddy,

Thanks for reading. Egyptair Plus Platinum is equivalent to Star Alliance Gold, as is Egyptair Plus Gold.

You can check the Star Alliance status equivalency here: https://www.staralliance.com/en/recognition

Hi, I’m a Mileage Plus member with United Airlines. In a couple of weeks, I am traveling with Avianca. To earn miles for the trip, should I just give Avianca my United membership number? Or do I need to create a Star Alliance membership number?
Thanks,

August 10, 2019

Hi Nancy,

If you wish to earn United miles for your trip, then yes you can provide Avianca with your United Mileage Plus number.

Thanks for reading!

Hi folks some advice needed here. I’m a long time SA Gold member on Scandinavian. I just moved to the US and so logically I would use United.

As my Scandinavian loyalty scheme (Eurobonus) is only really useful in Europe I opened a MileagePlus account with United.

The problem…when I book with United and build up my status there on MileagePlus, there’s no way when booked that United knows I am a Star Alliance Gold member. Therefore the following happens:

1. I don’t see baggage benefits when booking.
2. When going through security, my boarding pass doesn’t have ‘priority status’ and fails, needing someone to come over and speak to me. Also applies to priority boarding.

I thought the point of SA was to benefit from this globally but it seems airlines are not connected? Please help advise.

Stephen Au

September 11, 2019

Hi David,

In order to enjoy Star Alliance benefits, you need to input your SAS Eurobonus number when making your bookings. However, you will earn SAS miles and not United miles. Otherwise, if you want to pursue United elite status, you have to “start from scratch” and input your United MileagePlus number.

Ultimately, it’s a trade-off as to which frequent flyer number you decide to use.

Hi,
I’m trying to find out how many One Pass miles it takes to fly round trip from Denver to Panama City, Panama. All I find is approximately 1.3 cents/mile but even that is questionable.
Is there a site that I can plug in both airports and get that number?
Thanks

Jarrod West

September 23, 2019

Hi Bob,

One Pass miles from Continental Airlines were converted to the United MileagePlus program back in 2011. To fly from Denver to Panama City, Panama with United will cost 35,000 for a round-trip Saver Award, or 80,000 for an Everyday Award. You can view this, and other destinations, by visiting this link: https://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/mileageplus/awards/travel/awardTravel.aspx

Hi, is it possible to use my Copa points as part payment for a Turkish Airlines flight, or would the ticket need to be paid in full with points? Thank you!

Andrew Kunesh

December 02, 2019

Hi Carmen, the whole ticket must be paid with points if you’re redeeming Copa miles for a Turkish Airlines ticket. You may be able to purchase extra Copa miles to top off your account for the redemption, though. Thanks for reading!

I was a member of Star Alliance but did not use it for long time. These days I am flying with the Airlines of Star Alliance. Can you trace my membership status (number) and guide me as to how to get my new mileage points?

Christine Krzyszton

October 11, 2019

Hello Rohit. First, please understand that we are not Star Alliance, we are a blog specializing in miles, points, travel, and credit card resources. You would need to contact the specific airline with which you had a frequent flyer membership to recover your membership number and request any miles flown. You can start by reviewing the list of Star Alliance airline partners is in the article and select the one you have a membership with, then contact that airline.

October 30, 2019

Hello, I am currently a Star Alliance Gold member through United Mileage Plus. I will be switching to another SA frequent flyer program next year (with no status). While I understand I will lose benefits like priority check-in, baggage under the new frequent flyer program. I was wondering if I can still at least access the SA lounge with my UA Gold membership while credit the miles to a no status SA program. Of course, I will be flying SA airlines.

Thank you!

Stephen Au

October 30, 2019

Hi Rou,

Yes you will still have lounge access. Star Alliance Gold has one of the best lounge access policies in which as long as you’re traveling on a same-day flight, you can access the lounge.

November 02, 2019

Hi,

Does Singapore Airlines automatically recognize my United Airlines MileagePlus Premier Gold status which is the same as Star Alliance Gold status? I have just recently (last week) achieved United Premier Gold and will be flying Singapore Airlines tomorrow so wondering if Singapore Airline’s system has been updated. Or should I just show my digital card on my United app?

I am asking because United Airlines says they no longer issue physical cards for Premier Gold status.

Also, is there a way to obtain a physical Star Alliance Gold membership card?

Thank you so much for your insights and help!

Best Regards,

BG

Andrew Kunesh

November 07, 2019

Hey BG,

While there’s no way to obtain a physical United Gold card, you will receive all associated benefits with your boarding pass. Just make sure to add your United MileagePlus number to your Singapore Airlines ticket. Your boarding pass will display your Star Alliance Gold status after adding the number to your ticket.

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi LM,

You won’t receive every benefit that you receive with United Gold status, but you will receive all of the benefits included with Star Alliance Gold.

I plan to book a business class seat via United Airlines that the flight is operated by Air Canada for an international flight from LAX to Casablanca, Morocco.
I learn in year 2020 United airline states no miles expire, and also change the air miles accrual program to be based on revenue (purchase fare value), and not by flown miles distance.
My question is whether I should use United Plus frequent flyer # or use EvaAir frequent fleure # ( to get the best miles accrue value for future award or upgrade) when booking business class seat with cash fare.

I am a United Mileage Plus Premier Gold member. I just booked a discount fare on TAP. The discount fare I have says that a checked bag will cost. I have been trying for days to understand if my bag is checked for free because I am a Star Alliance Gold member, but no one from TAP will reply. I tried calling but the language barrier makes it hard for them to understand me.

Can you help?

I found you site very very informative…

Good day I’m holding 500k of Amex points, and I fly mostly United EWR/LAX. Is there any good way to use those points without getting killed on the exchange rate of 1:1 or better? Thanks.

Stephen Au

September 21, 2020

Hello David,

1:1 exchange rate doesn’t really mean much. The benefit of Amex points is that the partners you can transfer points to are very valuable. You can book round-trip business class to Europe for as little as 88,000 Amex points. That’s a $6,000+ ticket!

If you feel like you’d get value from a service that will optimize your award travel and offer ultra-personalized points wealth management, please feel free to contact me directly at stephen@upgradedpoints.com to inquire about a monthly subscription service.

I made a reservation with Avianca for SFO-MGA using UA miles. I have not flown Avianca w/air miles before. How close to the departure date will Avianca send the confirmation, immigration form, and Cv test form that I need for Nicaragua?

Hi DM,

Avianca should send you an email with those details a few weeks before your flight is scheduled to depart.

May be a dumb question. I’m trying to book a flight on TAP Portugal, but want to use my United number. Do I still need to create a TAP account (which the website is trying to get me to do), or do I complete my reservation as a guest and then enter my United number?

Christine Krzyszton

December 10, 2021

Hi Blair. Yes, continue to book as a guest and when it asks you to enter the passenger details you will be able to add your United MileagePlus number.

Hi I booked an award ticket with Turkish Airlines miles. I have Star Alliance Gold with Krissflyer. How do I get the extra 20kg baggage allowance? Since the award ticket is booked, I’m thinking I’ll have to call and try to explain. Thanks!

Jarrod West

January 18, 2022

Hi Chicagoan33,

If you call Turkish they should be able to manually add your KrisFlyer number to your booking so that you’ll receive your Star Alliance Gold benefits.

Jon

February 13, 2022

I want to travel to Europe from San Diego. My understanding is if I use a miles card with Lufthansa or Swiss Air there will be a huge fuel surcharge tacked on to an award flight. However, if I use United Award Miles to fly with partner Lufthansa or Swiss there is no fuel surcharge. Am I correct in this?

Jarrod West

February 14, 2022

Hi Jon,

Yes, that is correct. The fuel surcharges are much lower when booking through United.

I have Star Alliance Gold status (through Aeroplan), and intend on traveling internationally on Singapore Airlines with my partner and daughter (5 years old).

Will we be able to all use all the benefits? For example, fast track, priority check in, etc?

Thank you.

Hi John,

Yes, you should receive all of your Star Alliance Gold benefits since you are flying with a Star Alliance carrier. Just make sure your Aeroplan number is included with your booking.

I recently received Gold through Krisflyer transfer promotion. Can I use it to get free check in luggage for Aegean lite economy fare? Do I just provide them my Krisflyer account number?

Hi Tang,

Yes, if you add your KrisFlyer number to your Aegean booking then you should receive the checked baggage benefits.

I would appreciate some feedback here. I am an Elite member on Turkish Airlines, for which I get Star Alliance Gold Status. I have recently flown TAP Air Portugal, Lufthansa, Egypt Air, and United Airlines and neither of the boarding passes showed Gold Status on Star Alliance. On the United Flights, the gate agents wouldn’t let me board with Star Alliance Gold members even after I presented my Star Alliance Gold status digital card, nor have I been able to take advantage of one free checked luggage. I was told the gold status needed to be on the boarding pass. I was advised to contact Turkish Airlines and have them update my status in the system. It’s taken some calls and correspondences with Turkish Air who say my information has been updated. A check with United Airlines fails to confirm that Turkish Air has updated status. I have always added my Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles number to all bookings. Interestingly, I do get mileage credit for most of the flights, but not for others. But none has my Star Alliance gold status on the boarding passes. Any suggestions on how to carry forward? How does updating one’s status occur on the Star Alliance platform? Is it just Turkish Airlines being difficult?

Hi Nik,

That is very bizarre that it is not showing you Star Alliance Gold status on your ticket if you are putting your Turkish number in on each booking. I would imagine since this has happened on multiple flight that the error is being caused by Turkish. Have you had another Star Alliance flight since you called Turkish and they told you that your information had been updated?

Nik

No I haven’t had another flight since updated info but I did call UA and was told my TK number was listed on my next flight, however there was nothing indicating Gold status.

I am a United Mileage Plus member who recently flew on an Avianca flight. I would like to get the miles on my United account. I have my e-ticket number from one segment of the trip. Do you know how I would go about doing that?

Hi Renae. If it has been more than 7 days (it normally takes that long for partner miles to show up), you can submit a request for missing miles by logging in to your United MileagePlus account.

Hello there,

I do not have any status. Just redeemed one way business class flights with united mileage for July from KUL to ORD. The flights are KUL to BKK, BKK to BRU (both Thai airways) and BEL to ORD (United). It said $ 119 for the first and second check in luggage. I am shocked that luggage will not covered. Do you have any experience or heard of these?

Thank you!

Hi Ping,

Your checked bags should be free in business class. I recommend you contact Thai Airways directly to verify before your flight.

How do I find out if Lufthansa, Singapore, Thai and turkish Airlines will give me United Miles credit for my United MP account? I am a Gold card holder.

Hi H.Khan,

They are Star Alliance partners, if you put in your United number during booking then you will earn United miles when you fly with those airlines.

Hello,
I have Premier 1K status on UAL’s Mileage Plus program. I frequently book award flights on other Star Alliance FF programs (e.g Aeroplan, ANA, Lifemiles). Is there an easy, straightforward way to have my SA Gold status carry through when booking seats fights when not using UAL’s portal? I have an Egypt Air flight this weekend booked through Lifemiles and both Lifemiles and Egypt Air have been unwilling (or unable?) to add my SA Gold status on their programs.

Thanks
Giancarlo

Hi Giancarlo,

You have to have your United MileagePlus number added to the booking in order for your Star Alliance benefits to be recognized.

Hi all,
This is my first post, thanks for all useful info.

I am Aegean Miles & Bonus Gold member (i.e. Star Alliance Gold) and I also gather miles with Lufthansa’s Miles & More.

I’m flying Lufthansa tomorrow, and I added my Lufthansa frequent flyer details, because I want to credit these miles to Miles & More (Aegean does not give miles for this flight). Hence, my Star Alliance Gold status benefits (fast track, additional luggage) are not visible in my boarding pass (whereas, if I use my Aegean frequent flyer details, the boarding pass indicates my gold status – but as said above, I want to use Lufthansa because no miles are credited by Aegean for this flight).

I’m wondering whether showing my Aegean Gold Card would allow me to go to fast track and justify an additional luggage.
Any suggestions for this situation?

Thank you.

Hello, I am an an ANA platinum member with Star Alliance Gold equivalent. I achieved this status flying many businesses class flights on ANA so I don’t know much about it. When I book a flight on Lufthansa, for example, do I put in my ANA number and it will recognize that?

Is there anywhere I can read tips and tricks for ANA and how to use it for other star alliance flights?

Jarrod West

April 24, 2023

Hi Vincent,

Yes, when you fly another Star Alliance carrier you’ll want to put your ANA number in at booking to receive your Star Alliance Gold benefits.

A comment about “Co-Location Airports” when it comes to Stockholm-Arlanda. Since 2020, SAS domestic flights also depart from terminal 5. All remaining flights at Arlanda moved to terminal 5 at the start of the pandemic, and SAS domestic stayed there when other terminals opened.

Hi, I’d like to book a flight on Lufthansa that is codeshared with United. The flight is 200 euros cheaper on Lufthansa’s website. If I book with my United Explorer credit card, will I still get free baggage or is this only an option by booking though United’s website?

Hi Kelly,

To use the free checked-bag benefit, it needs to be a United-operated flight.

Greetings. I am an Air New Zealand frequent flyer and planning a trip from Toronto to Stockholm on SAS. I tried to add my Air NZ frequent flyer number on the SAS website when booking but there is no option for Air NZ. I would be grateful for any information you may have. Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

If you call the airline they should be able to add it manually for you.
