Whether you’re flying domestically or internationally, every airline has its own carry-on luggage size restrictions. There is no one-size-fits-all, so you need to check your airline’s specific policy before traveling to ensure your carry-on bag isn’t rejected with potential additional charges.

Below, you’ll find a helpful chart detailing the most popular airlines’ carry-on restrictions, including the size and weight of a standard carry-on, and whether this varies due to the cabin you’re traveling in. We’ve also covered checked luggage sizes and allowances, too.

Don’t forget that there are many ways to avoid paying for baggage fees such as carry-ons and that’s what we cover in our in-depth article.

Unless specified, the maximum weight allowance is across your standard carry-on luggage and personal item combined.

The size limits shown for Alitalia are not correct according to their web site.

For a personal item, the current limit is 36 cm x 45 cm x 20 cm. In inches, this is 17.1 x 14.2 x 7.9.

For an overhead bag, your chart shows the correct limit in centimeters. But you say that 25 cm is equivalent to 9 inches. But it’s actually equal to 9.84 inches, so 10 inches would be more accurate for the chart.

Hi Malden,

Thank you again for your input. Where only 1 unit of measurement has been provided by the airline, to represent another we have rounded down rather than up to reflect sizing that would be compliant with the airlines rules rather than providing a figure that would not.

Ajay

July 11, 2023

that makes sense Cath – especially if you met a stickler for the rules who denied your bag 🙁

Is there anywhere in the US that actually sells the 22x18x10 bag allowed by British Airways? I’m stumped! Thanks.

Christine Krzyszton

July 15, 2019

Hi Jody. Yes, luggage that size is sold by a large number of retailers in the U.S. Here’s a recent article with some ideas. /best-carry-on-luggage-bags/

John Petersen

January 19, 2022

Yes, UNDERSEAT PRO sells a carry on with those exact measurements. They designed it for Spirit Airlines, Spirit has the same carry on size allowance as British Airways.

Malden

July 27, 2019

For Austrian Airlines, the maximum size for a personal item says:

40 x 30 x 10 cm
16 x 5.5 x 4 in

30 cm is actually equal to 11.8 inches.

Is a baby carriage that is 44 long, 9 wide and 8 deep folded up small enough to fit on a 787 Dreamliner in business class overhead bin? I have searched everywhere and can not find the size of a overhead bin for this aircraft. Thanks for your help in this matter. Lt Col Vaught, USAF, Ret

Catherine Luther

August 01, 2019

Hi Richard,

We recommend that you contact the airline you’re flying with for your query. Hopefully they will be able to help you with the overhead bin size but will also be able to tell you whether you are permitted to take strollers in the cabin or whether these need to be checked. Those airlines that do allow strollers on board will often have specific size restrictions for strollers permitted in the cabin.

I have a duffle bag on wheels the measurements are 24″wide counting the wheels by 121/2″ deep by 121/2″ tall counting the wheels. Can I use this as a carry on for a domestic flight on Southwest airlines?

Jarrod West

October 03, 2019

Hi Patricia,

It looks like you’ve said that your duffle bag is 121 inches deep and 121 inches tall, were you meaning 12.5 x 12.5?

Sam Landfried

January 13, 2020

Or it looks like 12 1/2 or 12.5 inches

Jarrod West

January 20, 2020

Hi Patricia,

I would guess that a bag that is 24x 12.5 x 12.5 would be fine to bring on a Southwest plane. In my experience, Southwest seldom seems to measure carry-on bag sizes at the gate unless they seem much larger than the stated limits.

Lana

January 25, 2021

I am going to BMT soon and I have to fly out to Texas and I was wondering if my bag is too big for a carry-on? It’s 22”x12”x”12.

Jarrod West

January 26, 2021

Hi Lana,

It will likely be fine to travel with but if you tell me what airline you’re flying I can give you more specific information.

Alonzo

It seems to be wrong in terms of Eurowings. It only allows the laughably small baggage in the basic fare – similar to other low cost airlines.

How strict is Delta on carry ons that are slightly larger than standard 22x14x9?
Just bought a new Samsonite Theroym 23.5×15.5×10.5
Thanks!

Katie Seemann

May 31, 2022

Hi Jim,
It really depends on the gate agents. They may let it slide but there’s a chance they would make you check it at the gate. Good luck!

What about CPAP machine does that count as a carry on? I also use a walker what are the rules for them?

Jarrod West

Hi Shirley,

You can bring both of those items on board without issue.

Thank you for pointing that out, I’ve just updated the post.

Alex Thomson

This is how I read it too but everyone seems to say on forums that the personal item size for Allegiant is smaller than this. Has it changed recently?

Azzam

July 30, 2023

In the event that the official size for the height of the carry-on bag is 55 cm, according to which airlines I will be traveling on, and my bag is 56 cm. Will the bag pass to the cabin or will it be considered as checked baggage?
