Is a backpack considered carry-on?

A backpack would be considered a carry-on item if it adheres to the maximum size restrictions of a specific airline. Most airlines have a larger size allowance for a standard carry-on piece and slightly smaller for a personal item (where permitted).

What is not allowed in a carry-on bag?

For safety reasons, there are certain items that are prohibited for carry-on luggage. These include individual liquids over 100 ml (3.4 ounces) or a combined allowance over 1 liter (1 quart), sharp objects such as scissors, blades or pen knives, firearms, sporting equipment such as baseball bats or hockey sticks, tools, lighters, matches or other flammable items.

What is the standard size of a carry-on bag?

There are no universal standards for carry-on baggage with each airline setting its own size and weight restrictions. If you wanted to purchase a bag that would adhere to most of the different airline standards then this would be 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 inches) (including all handles and wheels).

Can I take my phone charger in my carry-on?

General chargers for electronic devices can be packed as carry-on or into your checked baggage. If you’re using a portable power bank then most airlines require you to pack this in your carry-on bag due to fire risks from lithium batteries in the hold.

Is a 24-inch suitcase a carry-on?

A 24-inch suitcase would be considered a carry-on by some airlines, but not all. Some airlines state max linear dimension only so as long as your other 2 measurements were smaller to allow for the 24-inch length then this would be fine, but generally, a suitcase measuring 22 x 14 x 9 inches would be the most widely accepted. Similar to size restrictions, there are no standards for maximum weight allowances for carry-on luggage. These are defined by each individual airline, with some airlines actually not stating a restriction — just that you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead compartment yourself.

It’s also worth checking whether the airline’s stated weight allowance applies just to your carry-on piece or combined across your carry-on and personal item (if applicable).

If you have booked a “hand baggage only” fare (sometimes referred to as a basic fare), this means that you may only bring hand baggage that is within the airline’s restrictions. No hold baggage is included. Depending on your airline, this may include 1 standard piece of carry-on and 1 smaller personal item. Each airline defines its own size and weight restrictions for carry-on so check the table above for more information.

TSA allows passengers to pack certain items in their carry-on baggage and prohibits others. Liquids may be brought on board under the 3-1-1 rule: maximum of 3.4 ounces per container up to a total of 1 quart, within a clear, zip-top bag, with 1 bag permitted per passenger. The size limits shown for Alitalia are not correct according to their web site.

For a personal item, the current limit is 36 cm x 45 cm x 20 cm. In inches, this is 17.1 x 14.2 x 7.9.

For an overhead bag, your chart shows the correct limit in centimeters. But you say that 25 cm is equivalent to 9 inches. But it’s actually equal to 9.84 inches, so 10 inches would be more accurate for the chart.

Thank you again for your input. Where only 1 unit of measurement has been provided by the airline, to represent another we have rounded down rather than up to reflect sizing that would be compliant with the airlines rules rather than providing a figure that would not.

Yes, UNDERSEAT PRO sells a carry on with those exact measurements. They designed it for Spirit Airlines, Spirit has the same carry on size allowance as British Airways.

For Austrian Airlines, the maximum size for a personal item says:

40 x 30 x 10 cm
16 x 5.5 x 4 in

30 cm is actually equal to 11.8 inches.

Is a baby carriage that is 44 long, 9 wide and 8 deep folded up small enough to fit on a 787 Dreamliner in business class overhead bin? I have searched everywhere and can not find the size of a overhead bin for this aircraft. Thanks for your help in this matter. Lt Col Vaught, USAF, Ret

Hi Richard,

We recommend that you contact the airline you’re flying with for your query. Hopefully they will be able to help you with the overhead bin size but will also be able to tell you whether you are permitted to take strollers in the cabin or whether these need to be checked. Those airlines that do allow strollers on board will often have specific size restrictions for strollers permitted in the cabin.

Hi Patricia,

I would guess that a bag that is 24x 12.5 x 12.5 would be fine to bring on a Southwest plane. In my experience, Southwest seldom seems to measure carry-on bag sizes at the gate unless they seem much larger than the stated limits.

In the event that the official size for the height of the carry-on bag is 55 cm, according to which airlines I will be traveling on, and my bag is 56 cm. Will the bag pass to the cabin or will it be considered as checked baggage?
