Amex trip cancellation coverage provides for the reimbursement of non-refundable expenses paid to the travel provider when a covered loss causes the cancellation of your trip.

Who Is Covered?

You, your family, and your traveling companions are covered when the eligible trip has been purchased with your card. Family is defined as a spouse, domestic partner, or unmarried dependent child up to age 19 (age 26 if full-time college/university student).

Conditions for Valid Coverage

For coverage to be active, you must adhere to the following:

  • Pay for your common carrier trip in full with your eligible American Express card or in combination with points accumulated on the card, frequent flyer miles, vouchers, or coupons
  • The trip must be somewhere other than your place of residence
  • The trip cannot exceed 365 days in length
  • The period of travel can consist of round-trip, one-way, or combinations of the 2

How To File a Claim With Amex

The trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance on your applicable American Express card is secondary to any other travel insurance that may apply. For this reason, you’ll want to contact and file a claim with any existing insurance company first before filing a claim with American Express.

You must notify the claims administrator within 60 days of the incident and provide the following:

  • Copies of your common carrier ticket and travel supplier receipts
  • Billing statement for your card showing the trip charges
  • Documentation showing proof of the loss
  • A copy of the travel supplier’s cancellation policy
  • Other documentation requested by the claim administrator

You will have 180 days from the date of the loss to submit the required information.

How To File a Claim With Capital One

You must report a claim to Capital One within 20 days of the event or “as soon as reasonably possible.” Report the claim by calling 800-825-4062 within the U.S. or calling 804-965-8071 when outside of the U.S.

Once the claims administrator has received your notice, you will be sent claims forms to be completed within 15 days. This can also be done online.

Documentation You May Need To Provide

  • Copy of your Capital One monthly billing statement showing the ticket purchase
  • Documentation if more than 1 payment method was used
  • Confirmation of the non-refundable amounts and cancellation from the carrier
  • Copy of the travel itinerary with traveler’s names
  • Reason for trip cancellation and supporting documentation such as a doctor’s report
  • A copy of the cancellation policy of the travel provider

Keep in mind that coverage is secondary to any compensation issued by the airline.

However, if you receive a trip credit for the entire amount of the ticket, you may be eligible for any change fees you are required to pay. And if you do not use an issued voucher by the expiration date, you could also receive reimbursement once it expires.

Who Is Covered?

You and your immediate family are covered for trip cancellation and trip interruption when even a portion of your trip is paid for with your qualifying card. You can also use Chase Ultimate Rewards points or a combination of paying with your card and points to receive coverage.

Chase has a broad definition of “immediate family.” The definition includes:

  • Spouse
  • Domestic partner
  • Children (including adopted children and step-children)
  • Legal guardians or wards
  • Siblings or siblings-in-law
  • Parents or parents-in-law
  • Grandparents
  • Grandchildren
  • Nieces and nephews
  • Aunts and uncles

You also do not need to be traveling with your family members for coverage to be valid. You must, however, have paid for a portion of the trip with your qualifying Chase card or Ultimate Rewards points.

Bottom Line: Coverage limits vary but the definition of a covered loss, which situations are excluded, and who is eligible for coverage are consistent across these Chase credit cards.

  • The trip must be paid for with your eligible Chase card and/or points redeemed with a Chase card

How To File a Claim With Chase

Most trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance are in excess over other coverage you might have, whether from a separate travel insurance policy you purchased or from compensation you received directly from the common carrier.

For example, if an airline pays for your hotel room, transport to the hotel, and meals due to a flight cancellation, your credit card coverage is only going to cover reimbursement for eligible expenses you incurred above what the carrier provided or for which they reimbursed you.

For this reason, some of the documentation you’ll need to submit will need to come from the common carrier. It’s best to be informed upfront, before you travel, of what may be required should you need to file a claim.

Call the benefits administrator as soon as you are aware of the trip cancellation or interruption. The administrator will take down the basic information and send you a claim form to complete.

Documentation You May Need To Provide

  • Your completed claim form
  • A copy of your travel itinerary
  • Documentation of the reason for the trip cancellation or interruption
  • Medical documents supporting a covered loss
  • Copy of your credit card statement showing the charges for prepaid travel expenses
  • Proof of other eligible expenses
  • Copy of the carrier’s or travel provider’s refund or cancellation policy

You have 90 days to provide loss documentation but the deadline can be extended to 1 year if there is a valid reason the documentation could not be obtained within the 90-day period.

Chase states that it will pay the claim within 60 days after they have received all of the required documentation.

Thank you for the great overview Christine. I had an airline that cancelled a flight to Asheville, NC due to weather. No other airline cancelled flights there, but we were unable to get on another flight and this means that my return flight (separate ticket, separate airline) is useless. Can I cancel this flight and expect my Sapphire Reserve insurance policy to cover me?

Hi Iggy and thanks for your comment. A canceled flight is always frustrating and especially so when you have another (separate) ticket involved. I would just call the number on the back of your card and ask for the claim administrator. That way, you can give them all of the details and they can give you direction on what to do. That would be much more helpful than my opinion. However, depending on whether you have status with the other airline (separate return ticket), you might be able to explain the situation and ask for them to waive the change fee. You could then use the credit at a later date. I have had success with that, more than once. Thanks again for reading, Iggy.

Found out our credit cards did not have the coverage. Was not going to pay for travel insurance, so we took a chance on TG card and it went well. But don’t want this to happen again.

I had booked two air tickets of Oman Airways through an agent during Feb 2020 for travel from Bangalore to Manchester during March 2020 but the flight was canceled by the Airlines due to Corona. My ticket rules stipulate that if canceled no refund will be given implying that if canceled by me. But the flight was canceled by the Airlines and we could not travel. The agent now says that the refund to all the passengers affected due to cancellation by Airlines will start only after 12 months of issued date though initially, they said the refund will be issued after 3 to 6 months. Are we eligible for the compensation or not? Please clarify.

Though we do not represent Oman Airways, the answer to your question is yes – if the airline cancels your ticket then you are entitled to a refund of the fare you paid.

Hello Sembu. Trip cancellation insurance that comes with your credit card does not cover COVID-19 related canceled flight events. Regarding your situation specifically, whether you are entitled to a refund depends on the airline’s policy and each airline handles these cancellations differently. Some airlines will refund tickets with flights that were canceled by the airline, some will not. I visited the Oman Airways website and did not see an official Covid-19 policy regarding flight cancellations. (Normally an agent will have to adhere to any policy the airline has published.) Unfortunately, you will have to work through your agent to continue to attempt to secure a refund. It may help to ask the agent to submit a formal refund request on your behalf to Oman Airways if they haven’t yet done so. Be persistent.

I have an AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard®. My flight was canceled from AA and when I call Mastercard to find out about my coverage, they answered that I have none. Call Chase, call Mastercard. Anyway, I have no coverage from the insurance that was supposed to have been included when I paid the annual fee. Is there anything I can do about it? Thanks.

Hi Yanina. Sorry for your frustration. There are very limited covered events that fall under the trip interruption/cancelation coverage on your card. I would refer to your Guide to Benefits for the coverage descriptions. American Airlines canceling a flight does not appear to be a covered event for card coverage but even if covered, it would be secondary to anything offered by AA. I would reach out to AA if you had incurred any extra expenses due to the cancellation.
