The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is easily one of the most popular travel rewards cards available thanks to its bonus categories, benefits, welcome offer, and the fact that it earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Like most credit cards, the welcome offer for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card can vary. So, if you’re hoping to get the biggest bonus possible, here are a few ways to help increase your chances.

Before we dive into how you can get the highest bonus possible on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, let’s take a look at some of the card’s best benefits to see if it is a good fit for you.

How To Find a Larger Chase Sapphire Preferred Bonus Offer

While the standard offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is usually pretty solid, you’ll always want to make sure you’re getting the best offer possible. Here are a few ways to try and track down a higher offer.

Increased Public Welcome Offer — Easiest Way

Naturally, one of the best ways to track down a higher welcome offer is by not having to track it down at all! Occasionally, Chase will offer an increased welcome offer available to everyone for a limited time.

Ultimate Rewards points are worth more when redeemed through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal, or even more when transferred to one of the Chase transfer partners.

Utilizing CardMatch

CardMatch is a tool that allows users to check for targeted offers from banking partners. Many of the larger U.S. banks, like Chase and American Express, publish these targeted offers to CardMatch and then reveal those offers to users when they use the CardMatch tool.

If you’re wanting to make sure that you’re prequalified for a card before you apply, CardMatch offers that as well. While being pre-approved does not guarantee approval, the likelihood of approval will improve significantly compared to someone who applies for the card through its website. Just be aware that there’s no guarantee that you’ll see better offers than what is offered publicly, but in our opinion, it’s worth checking out, especially as it’s free and your credit doesn’t get pulled.

Here is the information that you need to provide CardMatch with in order to use the tool to see your offers:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Last 4 digits of your Social Security number

While you may have hesitations on inserting the last 4 digits of your Social Security number, the entire website is secured using 256-bit encryption, and it is a PCI Level 1 Compliant organization — the same level of security offered from a bank.

Furthermore, when you insert these details into CardMatch, you will not receive a hard pull to your credit report. This information is only used to match you with any targeted offers you are eligible for.

Targeted Mailings From Chase

Another great option to increase your odds of receiving a higher offer is by opting into targeted mailings from Chase. Luckily, the process of doing so is pretty simple.

First, log into your account and click over to your Profile, then Settings. Once there, select Marketing Preferences, and then make sure you’ve selected Yes to receive special offers from Chase, which includes credit card offers!

Reasons You May Not Be Able To Get a Higher Welcome Offer

Chase’s 5/24 Rule

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is subject to the Chase 5/24 rule. If you’re not familiar, the 5/24 rules limit new applicants from opening certain cards with Chase if they have previously opened 5 or more new credit cards in the last 24 months.

Keep in mind that this mostly applies to new personal credit cards, as many business credit cards, personal loans, auto loans, etc., are not counted towards your 5/24 total.

So, if you’ve opened 5 or more new accounts over the past 2 years, you will not be approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card — even if you track down a higher welcome offer.

Low Credit

This reason likely needs no explanation, but if you currently have a low credit score, this will significantly decrease your odds of getting approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card — regardless of how large of a welcome offer you’re applying for.

If you were recently denied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, or think you would be denied if you applied, then your main priority should be to improve your credit score.

You’ve Opted Out of Marketing Offers

This one is very easy to overlook as Chase cannot send you marketing offers if you do not opt-in to receive them. If you want to limit the amount of snail mail you receive then you’re better off avoiding this, but if you want targeted offers mailed straight to you, then you have to opt-in!

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is an excellent travel credit card, especially for beginners and those new to points and miles.

So, if you’re considering adding the Chase Sapphire Preferred card to your wallet, be sure to do some research so that you can make sure you’re getting the best offer possible. Once you’ve earned the bonus, then comes the fun part of deciding how to redeem your Chase Ultimate Rewards points!

Will Chase count recurring automatic payments, like mortgage, health insurance, etc., as regular purchases towards the bonus offer?

Jarrod West

June 07, 2021

Hi John,

Yes, recurring purchases will count towards the minimum spend requirement for the bonus offer.

I’ve been wanting to refer someone for this card as I already have it. However, my referral code is only reflecting an 80k bonus for them. Is it normal to get less bonus points if you go through a referral or should it be the same 100k? This is my first time trying to refer someone. Thanks!

Jarrod West

June 15, 2021

Hi Victoria,

Sometimes it takes Chase a bit to update the personal referrals to match the public ones on their website. I cannot say when exactly they will update this, but I’m sure that they will at some point.

June 16, 2021

Hello,

So if I use a referral from a friend and it says 80k bonus points, will I, in fact, receive 80k points, or will I receive the full 100k?

Thank you

Jarrod West

June 16, 2021

Hi Cherish,

If the referral from your friends says 80k points then that is what you will receive. If you want the 100k point bonus then that is what needs to be stated on the landing page you’re applying from.

I applied for 80k card and was disappointed to learn that the offer was increased to 100k just a week later. Am I screwed or is there a way to get the higher bonus?

Is there a way to check if you qualify for 5/24 rule before applying?

Thank you.

Hi Adi,

You can try sending a secure message to Chase to see if they will match you to the higher welcome offer. As far as checking your 5/24 count, using Credit Karam is a great option as it will show you all of your account open dates.

They don’t match you based on the 5/24 rule, I tried and I am eligible. They offered me the credit card for 60K reward points and 3 weeks later increased to 80K and didn’t want to match. Regardless that I have been a customer for Chase for over 20 years – worst experience ever, I’m very disappointed. As soon as they credit the points I will cancel the card.

I have the same situation. I called Chase customer service weeks ago and was told I would receive the 100,000 points once I spend 4,000 within 3 months. Wrong! My account reflects 80,000 points will be coming. Called Chase today and was told No, I will not get the 100,000. That Bonus started June 3rd and I applied May 30th. Naturally, there’s no “record” of my prior call to Chase before I spent the $4,000 assuring me I would receive the 100,000 points. Shame on Chase!

I signed up for the Reserve and got the bonus 5 years ago. If I cancel it and am approved for the Preferred, will I be eligible for the bonus? If not, how long do I have to wait until I am eligible for the bonus?

Jarrod West

June 25, 2021

Hi Cody,

Yes, you would be eligible for the bonus on the Preferred. You do not necessarily need to cancel your Reserve card though. Instead, you could downgrade it to the Chase Freedom Flex or Chase Freedom Unlimited card, which will preserve your card’s credit history.

Caroline

March 25, 2022

She actually wouldn’t be eligible for another sapphire bonus. She has to wait 48 months.

Jarrod West

March 25, 2022

Hi Caroline,

You are required to wait 48 months from when you last received the bonus. Since Cody opened the card and received the bonus over 5 years ago, which is more than 48 months ago, then they are eligible for another Sapphire bonus.

I was approved but won’t get my card for a couple of days. My online chase account shoes I have the card. But… It doesn’t mention my signup bonus. Where do I find that or will it show up later? Should I call right away it wait until the card arrives?

Jarrod West

June 30, 2021

Hi Becky,

The welcome bonus usually posts on the next statement after you have met the minimum spending requirement.

Wayne

When does the offer expire?

Jarrod West

July 13, 2021

Hi Wayne,

At this time, we are not sure how long the offer will last.

Samuel Russell

I have spent over $4k on the card already but no bonus is showing up. Do I have to carry the balance on my statement to earn the reward? Or can I pay off the balance before the due date and still get the rewards?

Jarrod West

July 13, 2021

Hi Samuel,

Yes, you can pay the balance off before the due date and get rewards. The bonus will usually post the statement after you complete the minimum spend requirement, so if you recently completed it just give it a couple of weeks and it will post to your account.

Torii

July 14, 2021

Any thoughts on how long this offer will last?

Jarrod West

July 14, 2021

Hi Torii,

At this point, we have not received any word as to how long the offer will be available. But if you’re interested in it then I would definitely jump on it as soon as possible.

GL Alvarez

January 25, 2022

Actually, corrections Cody to one of your responses. If you have a CSR and downgraded to CSP, you would not get the current bonus! To get the bonus you would need to close your CSR/CSP account and apply for a new Reserve or Preferred card (assuming you didn’t get the bonus rewards in the last 48 months from the time your bonus was awarded to you) and still under 5/24.

Kathy

I have a Chase Sapphire card. I tried last year to get the Preferred card but they said I couldn’t since I have a Sapphire card already. Do you think if I just applied that it might go through? or should I call again?

Jarrod West

February 16, 2022

Hi Kathy,

Do you have the no annual fee Chase Sapphire card? If so, you could cancel that card and then apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Alternatively, you could call and ask to upgrade to the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, but if you upgrade you will not be eligible for the 60,000 point welcome bonus unfortunately.

Lynda

December 02, 2022

Is the 100,000 points promo still available for the chase sapphire card? If so how do I find it?

Jarrod West

December 05, 2022

Hi Lynda,

The 100,000 point bonus is not available at the moment. The current welcome offer for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is 60,000 points.
