Delta Air Lines follows a fairly standard baggage policy in terms of free carry-on bags, charging pretty average fees for U.S. domestic and Canada/Mexico flights, and including 1 to 2 bags in the base fare for international flights (dependent on cabin class).

Additional pieces after 1 to 2 bags, as well as overweight/oversized bags, carry a pretty hefty fee, so try to stick to your regulations!

Delta Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
1 standard carry-on bag: FREE

Size Restrictions

  • Personal: undisclosed, but Delta references items such as a purse, briefcase, camera bag, or laptop bag
  • Standard: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 cm)

Weight Restrictions (From the Following Departure Airports Only):

  • Beijing Capital International Airport: 22 pounds (10 kg)
  • Shanghai Pudong International Airport: 22 pounds (10 kg)
  • Singapore Changi International Airport: 15 pounds (7 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • Unticketed infants do not have a baggage allowance, so any baggage for the child counts as part of the adult’s baggage allowance. An adult is permitted to bring an infant seat, bassinet, breast pump, and/or associated cooler bag in addition to their carry-on allowance.

Stroller Check Policy

  • Delta Air Lines does not count strollers or car seats as part of standard baggage. Therefore, Delta checks these items for free at the curbside, ticket counter, or gate.

Delta Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) for economy and 70 pounds (32 kg) for Delta One, first, or business class and must adhere to max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

Delta One, Delta Premium Select, and First Class (Regardless of Route)

Fatmata,

We are not Delta Airlines, so please consult them directly. It depends on the exact route you’re flying, so please contact Delta.

Hi there,

Very helpful website! I cannot find what is the cost and weight limit of a third bag in First Class, for a flight between US and Central America. We will have a lot of luggage, so we’re wondering if it would pay off to get first class tickets and be able to have heavier bags… but that’ll depend on the cost of the third bag in first class.

Catherine Luther

August 05, 2019

Hi Sofia,

A third bag to Central America would cost 150 USD and for 4-10 bags the charge would be 200 USD each. This excludes the following airports: GUA Guatemala, SAP Honduras, SAL El Salvador where the cost is $200 each for any additional bags. These additional bags would be 32 kgs which is the same weight as your free allowance for First Class. If you booked an Economy ticket then each bag could only weigh up to 23 kgs.

Flying from New York to Jamaica. How much is it for the second and third check on luggage?

Jarrod West

August 08, 2019

Hi Meggan,

Your second checked bag will cost $40 and your third bag will cost $125.

Hello, what are the baggage requirements for Delta Business Class, domestic flight? Is it the same as First Class? Thank you for the helpful information!

Jarrod West

August 18, 2019

Hi Anita,

Yes, they are the same. You can bring a personal item, a carry-on, and two checked bags.

Hello,

I have a flight from London to Boston with a comfort plus ticket. Could you please clarify if I can take on board 1 cabin bag plus a standard shoulder bag?

Thank you

August 21, 2019

Hi Christopher, that’s correct: Comfort+ ticketholders are entitled to one personal item (shoulder bag) and a cabin bag. Thanks and safe travels!

I am considering on applying for the Gold Delta SkyMiles American Express card and be able to check in our luggage for free. However, I already purchased our tickets with another credit card. If I apply for this Amex card, will I still be able to check in my luggage for free?

Catherine Luther

August 22, 2019

Hi Annie,

To benefit from the free checked bag allowance, the credit card must be used to book the tickets. This didn’t used to be the case, but is now stated in these terms and conditions.

September 03, 2019

Hello,

I have a question regarding my trip to Spain. I’m planning on purchasing the flight via Delta using my new Gold Delta SkyMiles. I need to check in two 23kg luggage’s and am trying to figure out the most economic way of doing this. What I want to know is the following:

If I purchase a ticket for the main cabin which includes a free checked-in bag, does that mean that the Gold SkyMiles card will grant me an additional luggage to check in or will I have to pay for the second?

Is it better to purchase a basic economy ticket which is usually cheaper than the main cabin. Although I’ll have to pay for the second luggage, I’ll be able to get the free luggage that the SkyMiles card offers which will ultimately result in a lower cost.

Which one should I go with?

Catherine Luther

September 04, 2019

Hi Kelvin,

The free checked bag applies to the first checked bag only, so if you booked a flight that already includes luggage, you would still have to pay for the 2nd bag. So it would likely be cheaper for you to book a basic economy ticket and purchase your 2nd bag. Just obviously be aware of the limitations that can come with a basic economy fare such as no changes/cancellations or seat selection.

Hi
We are flying from Seattle (SEA) to Spokane (GEG) and wish to know the baggage allowance on Delta Premium Economy flights, which doesn’t seem to be listed anywhere.
One passenger will have one suitcase up to 50lb and the other will have one suitcase up to 50lb and a second suitcase that may be over 50lb but still less than 70lb.
Can you advise me, please?
Thanks in advance

Jarrod West

September 29, 2019

Hi Lesley,

For this route, each passngers first checked bag will cost $30 if it is under 50 lbs, and $40 for a second bag under 50 lbs. If either bag is over 50 lbs but under 70 lbs then they charge will be $100.

We’re flying from Paris to Atlanta in Delta “Premium Economy” seats, which aren’t listed on the Delta “Baggage and Travel Fees” page (I think it might be because it’s an Air France flight booked through Delta). Can you tell me what the baggage fees will be?

Jarrod West

October 03, 2019

Hi Andy,

For this route, you may bring 1 personal item, 1 carry-on item, and 1 checked bag free of charge.

I purchased a Delta economy ticket last month with another credit card. If I apply for Delta Gold will the checked bag fee be waived?

Jarrod West

October 08, 2019

Hi PoorChurner,

If you open the card before your flight then you should be able to receive a free checked bag since the benefit will be associated with your SkyMiles number and not the card you paid with. You could reach out to Delta for confirmation of this as well.

Thanks for reading!

Jyoti

October 10, 2019

Hi,

We are planning on flying from London – Las Vegas with Delta Airlines. I am a platinum member. How does the first free checked baggage work?

When I book the flights, do I purchase the flight without baggage and then add it later for it to be waived? The only option it gives me is to upgrade from economy light to economy plus however nothing is waived in pricing.

Also, will the free checked luggage apply to both me and my partner?

Thanks in advance.

Catherine Luther

October 15, 2019

Hi Jyoti,

I don’t believe the free checked bag benefit applies when booking a basic economy ticket with Delta and a transatlantic flight in standard economy already includes a checked bag . Give Delta a call to see what your options are.

Ravi

October 10, 2019

If I book an Air France flight from delta.com using Delta Amex Gold/Platinum card will I get a checked bag free?

Jarrod West

October 11, 2019

Hi Ravi,

Unfortunately, those cards do not include a free checked bag benefit. However, if you have Delta Air Lines set as your airline for the incidental credits offered with each card, then you can get your baggage fees reimbursed after paying for them with either your Amex Gold or Platinum card. Each year, you receive $100 in incidental credits on the Gold card and $200 on the Platinum card.

Thanks for reading!

Yuri

January 20, 2020

Jarrod West, can you reassess Ravi’s question? He is using either Gold Delta SkyMiles Card or Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card, those cards have the 1st bag checked for free as a benefit.

If you booked through Delta.com and the flight is operated by a partner airline, do you get the 1st checked bag free if a Delta SkyMiles card is used to book the flight?

Jarrod West

January 21, 2020

Hi Yuri,

You are not required to pay with the Delta Gold/Platinum card in order to receive the free baggage benefit. However, the terms state “The first checked bag fee waiver will only be applied on flight segments which originate on a Delta or Delta Connection® carrier when you check-in with Delta for both a Delta marketed and Delta operated flight. Codeshare flights are not eligible.”

In this case, you would not receive a free checked bag from the credit card when flying with Air France.

You should receive the baggage allowance from first class but check the information on the upgrade page if you do which should detail this.

Is a tennis racket considered a carry on?

Erin Miller

November 11, 2019

Hi Igor, Delta does not specifically mention any information about tennis rackets in their online section regarding baggage and sporting goods. However, Delta outlines the dimensions of a carry-on bag to not exceed 22″ x 14″ x 9″ as per their policy, and I would assume your racket is smaller than this? That being said, it also may depend on if you plan to bring this on as your “carry-on” item or as your “personal item”.

As such (and since we are not Delta), I suggest you call their customer service line and inquire with them directly. (1-800-221-1212 from the U.S.)

How do active military get free baggage on international flights returning to us states? Does the foreign country delta workers recognize delta’s commitment of US military free luggage? It’s challenging with the language barrier.

Hi Cody,

If your flight is with Delta Air Lines or was booked through Delta Air Lines, then their baggage benefit for active-duty military should be honored, even overseas.

Hello,
We are flying AMS-PDX in economy. What would the price of an overweight second bag be? Would it be $100/€85 (either as the standard fee for a second checked bag or for being an overweight bag) or would it be an additional $100/€85 for being both a second bag AND overweight (for a total of $200/€170)? Thank you in advance.

Jarrod West

January 02, 2020

Hi Kim,

Your assessment is correct. You should need to pay both $100 for the 2nd bag, and an additional $100 for it being overweight.

Steven Shadbolt

February 11, 2020

We (2 people) are flying from Amsterdam to Los Angeles via Portland. Next to the carry on luggage, we will have 1 suitcase each (23 kg each). It is unclear if we need to pay a fee on the leg Amsterdam – Portland and/or Portland – Los Angeles. Please advise?

Catherine Luther

February 12, 2020

Hi Steven,

This would depend on whether you’ve booked a basic or standard economy ticket. Basic economy does not include any checked luggage and would need to be purchased separately for $60. As we’re not Delta, you would need to contact the airline to confirm. If you booked both flights on 1 ticket then your baggage should apply for the full route, but you can also confirm this when you contact the airline.

Hello UPGRADEDPOINTS, I am thankful for this piece as it is very eye-opening for me especially since I will be flying Delta Air Lines for the first time in March, 2020 from Lagos, Nigeria to New York, USA. I’d like to know which or if all of the below items can go in with me without paying extra.
1. Backpack bag
2. Laptop bag
3. 1 Luggage under 23KG

Thank you.
Joshua

Catherine Luther

February 21, 2020

Hi Joshua,

Your carry-on allowance would be 1 item not exceeding 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 cm) and 1 personal item (Delta allows laptops bags).

For your route, you would be permitted 1 x 23 kg bag.

The charge for an overweight checked bag within the U.S. should be $100.

Catherine Luther

February 27, 2020

Hi Kimberley,

It is unlikely that you’ll receive the first class baggage allowance for the entire route, especially as the lower cabin is at the start of your journey where you will check your bags. You should contact the airline to confirm.

Jarrod West

Hi Nadine,

Since the tickets were booked through Delta, the baggage fees should be waived.

Should be and will be are two different things. I was just charged 50 Euro by the KLM gate agent for a checked bag, even though the flight was booked with Delta on a Delta AmEx Gold card.

What if I book a basic economy ticket with points through chase ultimate rewards? I hold a delta gold Amex. Can I pay for the checked bag with delta credit card at check in and request reimbursement? This is possible with the United chase card with same situation at United.

Hi Sonny,

Yes, you should be able to be reimbursed for the checked bag.

Hello! I am a Delta Gold Skymiles card holder. I am buy tickets for myself and a friend . I am originating in New York. They are originating in Boston. We are meeting at our connection in Atlanta then going on together to our destination. Will my friend qualify for a free checked bag even though we are originating from different cities?

Marie,

If they’re traveling on the same reservation as you, then it’s included. If you booked separate tickets, then you’ll get the free checked bag but they will not.

I plan to fly from JFK to CHS. If I am flying first class, will I get 2 free checked bags? As a sky team elite plus member, I get 1 additional free checked bag. So I can check in 3 bags for free, right?

Hi Dmitrij,

Yes, you should be able to check 3 bags for free.

My family will be taking a 6am flight out of ORD in April of this year (international flight, but the first leg is domestic with layover in ATL). Is there a way for us to pre-check in our luggage the night before? We are planning to spend the night at the airport hotel.

Hi,

Generally, airlines will only accept luggage 4 hours before a scheduled flight, but we suggest you give Delta a call to check with them.

Zoe Adams

Do I have to pay for the luggage of a layover flight as well? I booked a round-trip tickets and one of them has a very long layover and I was saying I have to pay for each flights checked bag policy.

Jarrod West

March 29, 2021

Hi Zoe,

If the trip is all booked under the same itinerary, then you should not need to pay twice for your baggage during the layover portion of your trip.

Just to confirm I change planes 3 times to go to Virginia and we have to pay 30 each plane change for our luggage? And the same coming home 3 plane changes?

Jarrod West

Hi Deborah,

If your entire trip was booked with Delta then you should not need to pay for your luggage three times, just once.

Due to my shoulder replacement, I need to use a pillow under my arm when sitting. It is about a foot square and about 4 inches thick. Will this count as a personal item or is it a health item free. What about my walking stick?

Jarrod West

April 02, 2021

Hi Delores,

Yes, you should be able to bring the pillow without issue, and your walking stick is considered a mobility aid so there is no issue in bringing that either.

2 questions:

Can I bring a pillow for my back next to my personal item and hand luggage?

I fly with Delta/KLM from Miami, layover Atlanta to Amsterdam

How much will each extra suitcase of 23kg cost me?
And can I pay cash at the desk/airport?

And/or is it cheaper to pay for my extra 2 suitcases online?

Thanks in advance! 🙂

P.S. I’m trying to call Delta, but I’m on hold now for 3hours and still waiting

Hi Rosanna,

It’s advisable to ensure you’ve got space in your carry-on to be able to pack your pillow inside if requested, as it can depend completely on the check-in agent on the day.

One 23 kg bag would be included with your ticket, with your first additional piece costing $100 and any further pieces, $285. Miami is one of Delta’s cashless airports, so it will not be possible for you to pay cash. Baggage fees are the same whether you purchase online or at the airport.

Delta required me to pay for the 2nd checked baggage ($100) on my economy flight from the US to Asia. Is there an additional update after this post?

Jarrod West

May 19, 2021

Hi DK,

What country in Asia did you fly to? Was either of your bags oversized or overweight?

Jon

The new DL policy for international economy ticket is one free bag. Second bag is $100 each way. Third bag is $200 each way. For medallions two bags for free and the third bag is $200 each way. Please update your website.

Hi Jon,

The prices you’ve mentioned do not appear to be correct based on this page of the Delta website. But nonetheless, we are currently in the process of updating this piece.

I am flying from NY to Dubrovnik with economy class, how many bags I am allowed?

Jarrod West

May 28, 2021

Hi Dijana,

As long as you are not flying basic economy, you will be allowed to bring 1 personal item, 1 carry-on bag, and 1 checked bag.

If I’m boarding a sequence of Delta flights from Europe to the USA with the first flight being a Delta codeshare operated by KLM, do I look to KLM for the baggage charges or to Delta? And if I book a Premium Select fare that only applies to the transatlantic leg will I still get the 2 free checked bags despite checking in with KLM? Thanks for any insights you can offer!

Jarrod West

June 10, 2021

Hi Jason,

If you booked the flight through Delta you will go by Delta’s baggage allowances, and yes you should get your 2 free checked bags for the entire trip.

Hi,

Does the delta gold card waive the first checked bag on basic economy international routes (like to europe, where there are no checked luggage included in basic economy fares)?

Jarrod West

June 16, 2021

Hi Mendel,

No, the benefit does not stack if you already receive a free checked bag. It only applies to routes where you would have to pay for a bag.

Amex Gold SkyMiles card used to buy Delta ticketed flight ATL-MAN via AMS return. (Basic economy). Of course, the AMS-MAN and MAN-AMS legs are operated by KLM, all other legs are on Delta aircraft. Because the return legs begin with a short MAN-AMS hop there is no free checked bag allowed for the entire return series. Interestingly, the KLM charge for that leg would be 20 euros, Delta insists that the charge is not relevant, the charge will be $60. I called and had it confirmed. I guess it makes sense to someone somewhere.

I have 4 checked bags. I am traveling in first class. The first two bags with 32 kgs will be free right? Could you please let me know what the weight should be for the other 2 bags and the cost?

Jarrod West

October 03, 2021

Hi Renu,

Can you let me know where you are flying to and from? As that will determine the baggage charges.

I’m trying to clarify baggage allowances, with the gold American Express card. I have a round-trip flight booked from the US to Scotland. The outbound flight shows that I have the checked bag with my reservation, and another with my card for free. On the return though, my reservation only shows 1 free checked bag. Does anyone know the reason for this? I would have assumed it would be the same outbound and return.

That is strange. Have you contacted Delta to ask about the disrepancy?
