One of the biggest money savers you can use when you’re booking travel is a free night certificate. And while it’s hard to imagine that you could ever get anything for free, it’s definitely possible to get these certificates as a credit cardholder (and a big spender, too).

With Hilton Honors, you can access more than 6,000 hotels and resorts around the world when you redeem free night certificates.

Thanks to a few amazing luxury hotel brands like Waldorf Astoria and Conrad, you can literally get more than $2,000+ of value with these free night certificates. How often do you get $2,000 handed to you?

Well, in this guide, we’ll show you how to access these free night certificates, and we’ll also walk you through all of the world’s most luxurious, expensive, and opulent properties you can book using Hilton free night certificates.

Of course, you should strive to redeem your free night certificates at the most expensive properties possible; after all, it’s not exactly a great value to book a $50 hotel room when you can book a $1,000 hotel room with the same certificate!

How To Earn Hilton Free Night Certificates

So, how exactly does one get Hilton free night certificates? Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to get these certificates.

American Express Hilton Honors Credit Cards

If you hold an eligible American Express Hilton Honors credit card, you can either get a free night certificate just by holding the card or spend your way to get a free night certificate. Some of our favorite cards include the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card and The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card.

The Hilton Aspire card is Amex’s ultra-premium credit card and confers a Free Night Reward certificate within your first year and every year after renewal, so all you need to do is hold onto the card!

You don’t need to make any big purchases or meet any special criteria to get a free night certificate. Also, you can earn an additional Free Night Reward certificate if you spend $60,000 on purchases in a calendar year.

You’ll also get access to an array of amazing perks, such as complimentary top-tier Hilton Honors Diamond elite status, a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, a $250 airline incidentals fee credit, a $250 Hilton resort credit, and much more.

Hot Tip: Historically, these Hilton free night certificates could only be used on weekends, however they are now valid any night of the week.

If you have the Hilton Surpass card, you have the ability to earn a free hotel night certificate after spending $15,000 in a calendar year.

Other benefits include complimentary Hilton Honors Gold elite status, 10 single-visit passes to Priority Pass lounges per year, the ability to earn Diamond elite status after spending $40,000 in a calendar year, plus up to 12x points per $1 spent.

The last card you can earn free night certificates on is the Hilton Business Amex card, which offers a free night if you spend $15,000 in a calendar year, plus a second free night after spending $45,000 more in a calendar year. Cardholders also receive the same benefits as previously mentioned for the Hilton Surpass card.

Bottom Line: 3 out of the 4 Amex Hilton cards offer the opportunity to get free night certificates — the only one that doesn’t is the Hilton Honors American Express Card, which has no annual fee (see rates and fees).

How To Redeem Hilton Free Night Certificates

So how do you know when you’ve received the certificate? You will get not 1, but 2 email notifications:

  • An email from American Express sent to your cardmember email address to let you know that your free night certificate is on the way
  • An email from Hilton Honors sent to the email address on your Hilton account to let you know that your free night certificate has been deposited

The first email will look something like this:

The first email you will receive is from American Express and it simply specifies that your free night certificate is on its way. Image Credit: American Express

And the second email will look something like this:

The second email you will receive is from Hilton, and it will contain your free night certificate number. Image Credit: Hilton

Typically, your free night certificate will be awarded to you 8 to 14 weeks after your cardmember anniversary. In this example, the card anniversary was on January 8th, and the free night certificate was deposited 76 days later on April 4th, which is around 11 weeks.

Hot Tip: The reason for the long lead times is to avoid cardmembers from getting the free night certificate and then immediately closing the card to avoid the annual fee.

To redeem your free night certificate, you will need to give Hilton Honors customer service a call at 800-446-6677.

Typically, the free night certificate has been valid for 1 year after the date of issuance, but due to COVID-19, these have been extended significantly.

This free night certificate covers the room rate, as well as taxes and fees in almost all situations.

There is only 1 free night certificate awarded, and the only person who gets it is the primary cardmember. That means all authorized users or employees will not get free night certificates.

There are some properties that are excluded, namely all-inclusive and vacation rental properties.

I just got off the phone with Hilton, I was calling about the Grand Wailea in Maui to try to book my free night and they said all of their rooms are premium and I could not book there with my certificate. So disappointed as it looks amazing!

Jamie

December 19, 2021

They were mistaken. I have used a certificate at the Grand Weilea.

Tom

December 28, 2021

Exactly the same just happened to me for that same hotel. Disappointed as hell!

Hi Tom,

You need to be flexible if you want to redeem your certificate at any aspirational hotel, including the Grand Wailea. Please go online and search for standard room availability, which will cost 95,000 Hilton points. Then, call Hilton Honors to book this night.

Dian

February 22, 2022

95K point? That is how many years ago? The current point showed at least 431K point for a king bed room. Maybe that is why you were able to use the certificate back then. LOL

Stephen Au

February 22, 2022

Hi Dian,

95K is the price for a standard room. There are dates available with 95K, but it’s hard to find multiple dates in a row. Your best shot is looking 1 month before the stay date.

TF

December 02, 2021

Same. I tried Cabo and Maldives and they are both premium rewards only, and thus not eligible for the free night rewards.

Stephen Au

December 02, 2021

Hi TF,

Keep trying to find standard rewards! Most dates will only have premium rewards, but some will have standard rewards.

I too just called for Grand Wailea both in 12/2021 and 2/2022, both times they said no standard room at this location, all premium rooms, so can’t use the free night award. Does the standard room only show up when they have a reduced point offer going on? I wonder.

So the free night reward is only for standard rooms? How can you tell if it’s a standard room vs. a premium room?

Hi Nickel. Yes, free night certificates work for standard room redemptions. When you log in to your Hilton Honors account, search for a hotel/room, and select the rate, you’ll see “standard room reward” designated as such (if available).

Would not recommend the lxr biltmore. Save your certificates for elsewhere.

I just used my weekend night at the Hotel Del Coronado. They gave me the worst room in the building and after I complained, they gave me the second worst room in the building. The first one was right over the south valet entrance with a view of the parking lot and the balcony was next to the public balcony. The next room they gave me was adjacent to the stairs and you could hear every step. It was made worse by a family with small kids running up and down it.

Just called HIlton and no standard rooms at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. Has anyone used their certificates at this property before?

Just called and got a standard room free night with a certificate, just make sure you tell them to look for a date with standard rooms, not premiums. Also, make sure the person you speak with is nice. First call told me no availability, only premium. Then called a few weeks later and the lady very nice book me 2 nights (with 2 certificates I had)

I’ve been trying to book my free night at the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal too and all the agents shut it down quickly stating all rooms are always premium. It should be listed on the excluded hotel list. I completed a promotion with the intention of using it on this hotel and now it feels like a bait and switch scheme.

They open up more rooms about 2 months in advance is what I read.

I just called Hilton as I wanted to use my Free Night Certificate for the Conrad Centennial Singapore. They told me that there is no premium king room, only Hilton Garden Inn has one standard room that can be booked. Hilton Garden Inn is always 30,000 points for one night and I don’t want to use my 95,000 points value certificate for a value of 30,000 points. I would like to ask if you have any good suggestions.

Hi Christian,

They are valid for 1 year from the issue date.

Does the double occupancy requirement mean that if traveling with my family (3 ppl), we would not be able to use the free night?

Hey Amanda,

That will depend on the occupancy limits for the standard room for the hotel you are looking at. They can vary greatly depending on where you are looking. Many hotels and resorts in the U.S. allow up to 4 people, while hotels abroad may have sticker limits.

For anyone having issues redeeming their free night reward with properties only listing premium room rewards, I highly recommend you request Hilton reach out to the hotel directly to open up their standard rooms for reservation. Unless a property is listed on Hilton’s list of exclusions, they have to honor your reward certificate. I had this issue with the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal and the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, and both hotels resolved the issue when Hilton reached out to them directly.
