I just got a nasty surprise. My “free” Transunion credit report is not really free. Yes, they sent me the report, but there is no credit score on it. When I called I was informed that my report IS free, but if I want to know my score, (which they are holding hostage) I must pay them $9.95. I researched this and apparently it is perfectly legal. There was a time when the government used to penalize businesses for this practice. It’s called a bait and switch. A business would run an ad saying they had TV’s for sale for a ridiculously cheap price. Then when the customers came to the store for the “great deal”, the store had just sold out (when they only had one in stock, or sometimes none), but they had this other one that was just 50 dollars more. It may be legal for them to SAY they are giving you a free credit report, but the last time I checked, free meant I didn’t have to whip out my credit card. I am very disappointed in this company and its misleading practices. If a credit report doesn’t include the credit score, it’s pretty much useless. It’s like selling me a “free” car but charging me $20,000 for the tires. Basically, the “free” report is useless without the credit score and they know it. I am very unsettled by this. These are the people in charge of my credit records but they have this sleazy, sneaky fee that you only find out about after you get a report that still tells you nothing about your credit standing…which they KNOW is the reason most people ask for a copy. Shameful.
