These days, credit cards come with lots of bells and whistles like points-earning capabilities, lounge access, hotel elite status, and travel insurance coverage.

Some of the lesser-known benefits of Chase cards are the protections that come complimentary for eligible purchases you make with your card. While coverages differ, depending on the card, every Chase card provides some level of protection.

In this post, we’ll look closer at the benefits your Chase credit card offers for consumer and business purchases. We’ll talk about how purchase protection, extended warranty, return protection, and cell phone protection work, and how to utilize these benefits.

Stay with us as we cover each of the protections you can expect on your Chase card.

Or, if you’re in a hurry, you can scroll to the bottom of the page to see a quick reference guide of which popular Chase cards offer a specific benefit.

Chase Purchase Protection

Purchase protection provides reimbursement or repair for an item purchased with your card in the event of theft or accidental damage. Purchase protection is very common — in fact, every Chase credit card offers it!

What Qualifies for Purchase Protection

To qualify for purchase protection, at least part of your purchase needs to be made with your Chase credit card (or points from the account associated with your credit card).

If the item you purchased is stolen or accidentally damaged within 120 days from the date of purchase, you may receive a replacement, repair, or reimbursement for your item at the discretion of the benefits administrator.

The amount of coverage you have is based on your specific card with limits capped by claim and account. You will only be reimbursed to replace or repair the item up to the dollar amount spent or your card’s claim limit, whichever is smaller.

Here are some examples of popular Chase credit cards that offer coverage of up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account:

Chase credit cards offering higher coverage limits of up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account include:

What Doesn’t Qualify for Purchase Protection

The following items do not qualify for purchase protection, even if they are purchased using a valid Chase credit card (according to the Chase Guide to Benefits).

  • Animals and living plants
  • Antiques and collectible items
  • Boats, aircraft, automobiles, and any other motorized vehicles and their motors, equipment, or accessories, including trailers and items that can be towed by or attached to any motorized vehicle
  • Computer software
  • Items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use
  • Items that mysteriously disappear; “mysterious disappearance” means the vanishing of an item in an unexplained manner when there is an absence of evidence of a wrongful act by a person or persons
  • Items under the care and control of a common carrier (including U.S. Postal Service, airplanes, or delivery service)
  • Items including, but not limited to, jewelry and watches from your baggage unless it is hand-carried and under your personal supervision, or under the supervision of your traveling companion who is previously known to you
  • Losses resulting from abuse, fraud, hostilities of any kind (including, but not limited to, war, invasion, rebellion, insurrection, or terrorist activities), confiscation by the authorities, risks of contraband, illegal activities, normal wear and tear, flood, earthquake, radioactive contamination, or damage from inherent product defects
  • Losses resulting from non-delivery or voluntary parting with the property
  • Medical equipment
  • Perishables and consumables, including but not limited to perfumes, cosmetics, and limited-life items such as rechargeable batteries
  • Traveler’s checks, cash, tickets, credit or debit cards, and any other negotiable instruments
  • Used or pre-owned items

How To Submit a Claim

To submit a claim for purchase protection, call 888-320-9656 within 90 days of the accidental damage, theft, or loss. The agent will send you a form to fill out that needs to be completed within 120 days from the damage, theft, or loss.

You might be asked to supply some or all of the following documents, plus any additional documentation deemed necessary by the benefit administrator:

  • Your completed and signed claim form
  • A copy of your card receipt
  • A copy of the itemized store receipt
  • Documentation linking the purchase back to your credit card account must be included if more than 1 method of payment was used
  • A copy of the police report (made within 48 hours of the occurrence in the case of theft), fire report, insurance claim, or loss report
  • A copy of your insurance declaration page
  • Documentation of any other settlement of the loss
  • If your claim is regarding a damaged item, you might be asked to send the item to the benefits administrator at your own expense

You should be notified within 15 days of receipt and approval of all required documentation if your item is going to be repaired or replaced.

If you are going to receive a reimbursement, you will generally be notified within 5 days of receipt and approval of all required documentation.

Bottom Line: Chase purchase protection is currently offered on every Chase credit card and provides reimbursement or repair for an eligible item purchased with your card in the event of theft or accidental damage. The amount of coverage offered varies by credit card.

Extended Warranty Protection

Chase extended warranty coverage increases the original manufacturer’s written U.S. warranty of an item by 1 year.

To be eligible, the original warranty needs to be less than 3 years in duration, and at least part of the item needs to have been purchased using the eligible credit card or points earned on that credit card.

Items purchased outside the U.S. are covered as long as they are purchased with your credit card and the eligible item has a valid original manufacturer-written U.S. repair warranty of 3 years or less, a store-purchased warranty, or an assembler warranty.

Each claim has a $10,000 maximum, and each account has a maximum of $50,000.

Chase Credit Cards That Come With Extended Warranty Protection

You can expect to find extended warranty coverage on these Chase personal credit cards:

Examples of Chase business credit cards that come with extended warranty protection include:

What’s Not Covered

  • Boats, automobiles, aircraft, and any other motorized vehicles and their motors, equipment, or accessories, including trailers and other items that can be towed by or attached to any motorized vehicle
  • Any costs other than those specifically covered under the terms of the original manufacturer-written U.S. repair warranty, as supplied by the original manufacturer, or other eligible warranty
  • Items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use
  • Rented or leased items or items purchased on an installment plan and for which the entire purchase price was not paid in full at the time of the occurrence
  • Computer software
  • Medical equipment
  • Used or pre-owned items

How To File a Claim

Call the benefits administrator at 888-320-9656 within 90 days after product failure. You will receive a claim form to fill out that needs to be returned within 120 days of product failure.

You may also need to provide the following documentation:

  • Credit card statement
  • Store receipt
  • The original manufacturer-written U.S. warranty
  • Any other applicable warranty unless the purchase is registered (this could include bills and a copy of the maintenance record and receipts)
  • A description and serial number of the item, and any other documentation deemed necessary to substantiate your claim
  • The original repair order

Bottom Line: Extended warranty coverage is offered by many Chase credit cards, and delivers value by extending the manufacturer’s warranty of an eligible item by 1 year.

Return Protection

Return protection is only offered on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, United Club Business card, and United Club Infinite card.

If you are unhappy with an item you purchased entirely on a card that has return protection and the store won’t take the merchandise back, you may be eligible for reimbursement for the cost of the item.

Call 888-880-5844 within 90 days of your purchase to file a claim. This benefit is limited to $500 per item and $1,000 annually.

You will be required to send the item (in like-new/good working condition) to the benefits administrator to receive reimbursement.

As with the other benefits, there are many items that aren’t included:

  • Animals and living plants
  • Boats, automobiles, aircraft
  • Computer software
  • Formal attire
  • Items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use
  • Items purchased outside of the U.S.
  • Items upon which alterations have been made
  • Jewelry, art objects, rare or precious coins or stamps, antiques, and collectible items
  • Medical equipment
  • Perishables, consumables, and limited-life items
  • Real estate and items which are intended to become part of real estate, including, but not limited to, items that are hard-wired or hard-plumbed, garage doors, garage door openers, and ceiling fans
  • Seasonal items including, but not limited to, holiday decorations

For a full list of what is not included in the return protection benefit, see the Chase Guide to Benefits.

Bottom Line: Return protection offers reimbursement for an item that you are unhappy with and the store will not take it back within 90 days of purchase. It’s only offered on 3 Chase credit cards: Chase Sapphire Reserve card, United Club Business card, and United Club Infinite card.

Cell Phone Protection

Cell phone protection is offered by 2 Chase cards, the Ink Business Preferred card and the Freedom Flex card.

This benefit will reimburse you for damage, theft, or “involuntary and accidental parting” of any eligible cell phones linked to your account.

These only include the phone lines listed on your most recent bill before the theft/damage occurred, and your bill must be charged to your card.

The Ink Business Preferred card has a $100 deductible per claim and a maximum of 3 claims per year. Each claim is capped at $1,000 (or the phone’s purchase price, whichever is less), and there is a limit of $3,000 in claims per 12-month period. The Freedom Flex card has a $50 deductible per claim and a maximum of 2 claims per year, with each claim capped at $800, with a yearly limit of $1,000.

This benefit does not cover all scenarios. Things that aren’t covered include:

  • Cellular wireless telephone accessories other than standard battery and/or standard antenna provided by the manufacturer
  • Cell phones purchased for resale
  • Cell phones that are lost or “mysteriously disappear,” meaning the vanishing of an item in an unexplained manner where there is the absence of evidence of a wrongful act by a person or persons
  • Cell phones under the care and control of a common carrier (including, but not limited to, U.S. Postal Service, airplanes, or delivery service)
  • Cell phones stolen from baggage unless hand-carried and under your personal supervision, or under the supervision of your traveling companion who is previously known to you
  • A cell phone which has been rented, leased, borrowed, or received as part of a prepaid wireless service plan or “pay as you go” type service plans
  • Cosmetic damage that does not impact the phone’s capabilities
  • Damage or theft resulting from abuse, intentional acts, fraud, hostilities of any kind
  • Damage or theft resulting from misdelivery or voluntary parting with the phone
  • Replacement phone not purchased from a cellular service provider’s retail or internet store, or from an authorized retailer
  • Taxes, delivery and transportation charges, and any other fees
For a full list of incidents that are not covered, view the Ink Business Preferred card Guide to Benefits.

Bottom Line: The cell phone protection benefit reimburses you for damage, theft, or “involuntary and accidental parting” of any eligible cell phones linked to your account and paid for with your credit card. You’ll find the coverage on the Ink Business Preferred card and the Freedom Flex card.

Final Thoughts

Your Chase credit cards offer valuable benefits above and beyond earning points for amazing travel experiences.

Purchase protection, along with extended warranty, return protection, and cell phone protection, are all benefits offered by various Chase credit cards designed to protect your consumer and business purchases.

Keep in mind, however, that protections offered on any Chase card can be eliminated, or changed, at any time. The Guide to Benefits that comes with your card (or you can access it online) is the ultimate source for you to find out if your Chase card offers a specific coverage. You can also contact the benefits administrator by calling the number on the back of your card.

It’s always smart to understand which benefits you have so you can take action if you need to file a claim.

I purchased a vacation package through a company for $499. Basically I get 5 nights at a variety of hotels to use over a 1 year period. Does return protection cover that non-refundable purchase of mine?

James Larounis

February 26, 2019

Hi Mayday. Usually return protection only covers tangible items such as clothing, a television or small furniture, let’s say. Generally, vacations and travel expenditures are not covered under return protection. That said, if you can let me know which credit card you purchases this on, I am happy to take a quick look and confirm the terms and conditions of your card.

I was told by the Chase rep that I need to get a diagnosis /repair estimate for the item I submitted a claim on but that Chase will reimburse me for the estimate cost. I did not ask for this in writing though and hope it is true. Are you familiar with Chase reimbursing estimate costs on a claim?

Hi Aaron. The terms and conditions state that Chase will reimburse the cost to repair or replace so the process appears to be on track. The discretion is up to the claims administrator and it sounds like they have chosen to go the repair route. It should progress just fine. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I have chase sapphire reserve and accidentally dropped my phone in the lake which I cannot recover now. Would chase pay for the lost phone as it’s within the 120 days?

Jarrod West

July 08, 2019

Hi Aashay,

If you are unable to recover the phone I am uncertain whether they will provide coverage or not. Also, in order to be eligible for coverage, you must have purchased the phone with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

I recommend you call 1-888-675-1461 for information or to file a claim. You can also file a claim online at eclaimsline.com

Aashay Shah

July 16, 2019

Thanks for your response. Yes, I did purchase the phone via chase sapphire reserve card. My question was more about will this scenario about phone getting lost in lake falls under the category ‘accidental parting’?

Jarrod West

July 16, 2019

Hi Aashay,

The terms and conditions they include with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card are very ambiguous in regard to that portion. The only way to know for certain is to file a claim at 1-888-675-1461 or online at eclaimsline.com

I hope you’re able to get the issue resolved!

What is to be understood as tickets for purchase protection?
Is this a blanket ticket which would include, concert tickets, sporting event tickets, broadway tickets, etc?

Thanks!

Katie Seemann

September 12, 2019

Hi Michael,
“Tickets” is as specific as Chase gets in their benefits guide. But yes, as far as I know, “tickets” refers to things like sporting events and concerts. If you are looking for a card that offers coverage for those things specifically, you can check out the Citi Prestige Card. That card comes with “Missed event ticket protection”.

Chris Coveney

November 02, 2019

Prestige has eliminated the missed event ticket protection (along with most other benefits!)

Chase is the absolute worst in terms of claiming a warranty. They have a third party handle their claims (of course so they take no blame).

I suggest if you want an extended warranty to look at American Express cards. At least they provide A+ customer service.

FYI IHG co-branded card price protection benefits being eliminated as of 11/17/2019. Source: I just opened one and was very disappointed to see that in the latest version of the guide to benefits.

I left my backpack in a taxi in Madrid and filled out a police report, however, while in the police station I forgot about half the items that were in the backpack and they were not listed on the police report. Do you know if the claim would be denied just because they aren’t on the police report?

Christine Krzyszton

March 24, 2020

Hi Karen. Sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident. Filing the police report was smart and will expedite your claim. Most insurance companies take into consideration we don’t remember everything when we’re in a stressed situation such as you experienced. Make your full list of the missing items and submit it to the claim administrator, along with the police report as soon as possible as there are deadlines for reporting the claim and submitting documents. Do understand that all of the items will not be covered under these protections/coverages.

Cindy

April 21, 2020

I rented a bicycle for a month and used my Chase Freedom Unlimited card. My rental agreement says I authorized a $1495.00 charge to my card if I fail to return the rented bicycle. Today the bicycle was stolen from the back of my pickup truck while I had my back turned and was 10 feet away. The theft is all on security video and I have filed a police report. Will Chase pay the $1495.00 the vendor says I owe?

Christine Krzyszton

April 22, 2020

Hi Cindy. Sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately, the incident wouldn’t fall under purchase protection or car rental insurance. However, you should call the number on the back of your card to speak with a claims administrator for further information.

Tammy

May 05, 2020

I paid for a hotel with my Disney Chase credit card. My computer and my eyeglasses were stolen out of my room. I have not heard from the general manager of the hotel and I have called 5 times. Is this covered under the protection? I would also like the money back from the hotel stay which doesn’t even cover half of the cost of the computer and glasses.

Hi Tammy. Sorry for the loss of your computer and glasses. Please be aware that we are not affiliated with Chase or Disney. We are Upgraded Points, a blog specializing in travel, points, miles, and personal finance resources. With that being said, purchase protection covers eligible items you have purchased with your card. If you purchased the stolen items with your card and the loss occurred within the coverage time limits, you can file a claim with Chase by calling the number on the back of your card.

Anusuyaraj

October 09, 2020

Is there a one-time adjustment on return protection for more than 120 days? I purchased a couple of cooking vessels in May 2020. I used one and assumed I would like the other. But when I opened it and started using it last month it’s not to my liking and doesn’t work well 😞 I regret very much that the return window is gone and it’s not useful for investing much. Let me know if it can be helped.

Christine Krzyszton

October 09, 2020

Hello Anusuyaraj. Please be advised that we are not affiliated with Chase so cannot make a determination as to how your claim would be handled. You should contact Chase, using the claim number stated in the article to discuss the situation.

Anila

January 30, 2021

I purchased a ticket for Cancun last March and it got canceled in July because of Covid-19. I called Chase on December 9th they said they are going to investigate to get my money back because the company from Pennsylvania did not want to give me my more than $2000 back. I called back Chase on January 9th and someone told me you are not going to get the money back because you were supposed to cancel within 120 days of purchase. No one told me on December 9th. Can anybody explain this to me?

Christine Krzyszton

February 01, 2021

Hi Anila. Airline tickets are not covered under price or purchase protection. You do not say whether you canceled your trip, the airline canceled, or the company in Pennsylvania canceled.
If the airline canceled your flights, you may have a travel voucher to use. There may even be a credit available for use if you canceled the trip. If you contacted Chase regarding trip cancelation insurance, please note that voluntary cancelations (that you initiated) due to fear of getting COVID-19 are not covered.

Scott Chace

August 14, 2021

I am looking at purchasing a new laptop. You can purchase an extended warranty (it comes with a one year warranty) for 2, 3, or 4 years. So if I purchase the 3 year warranty will the card (Freedom Flex) extend the warranty the 4th year?

Jarrod West

August 16, 2021

Hi Scott,

Yes, that is correct. Your card would provide you with one additional year of warranty protection.
