Several hotel credit cards provide free nights to cardholders as part of their perks and benefits offering — and we believe this is one of the best perks you can get from holding a credit card.

These credit card free night certificates can be very useful to travelers, because they can enable you to extend a trip by another night, or can get you a free room for a night without having to dip into your reserve of points that you may otherwise want to save for a higher-value redemption.

Several products in Marriott’s portfolio of co-branded credit cards offer free nights to cardholders, and Marriott Bonvoy has a huge footprint of hotels at which you can redeem these certificates at. With some incredible brands like St. Regis and The Ritz-Carlton, there are bound to be plenty of options for you to get exceptional value from your certificates!

Naturally, if you redeem a certificate at premium or luxury brands, you’ll get more out of your certificate because these types of properties typically cost more than mid-range or budget brands. In this guide, we’re going to take a look at the best properties at which you can redeem these free night certificates and get great value out of them.

Let’s get to it!

How To Get Marriott Bonvoy Free Night Certificates

Before you even think about where to use these free night certificates, you need to know how to get them — let’s have a look at the best ways to do so:

American Express Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards

If you hold the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card, Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card, or Marriott Bonvoy American Express® Card (no longer open for new applications), you will receive 1 free night certificate each year after renewal.

This free night certificate includes the room rate and applicable taxes and fees, so you’ll truly get a free night at a qualifying Marriott property when you use the certificate.

If you hold either the Marriott Bonvoy Business card or the Marriott Bonvoy card, your free night certificate is valid for a redemption price of up to 35,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. If you hold the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card, however, your free night certificate is valid for a redemption price of up to 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.

Only the primary cardmember will receive a free night certificate, so any authorized users or employees will not get their own free night certificates. The free night certificate is valid for 1 year after it’s issued.

Hot Tip: The new Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card doesn’t come with a free night certificate automatically, but you can earn one (with a redemption value up to 50,000 points) after spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year.

You’ll be notified via the email address listed on your Marriott Bonvoy account when the certificate is deposited into your account, and you’ll also be provided with instructions on how you can redeem your certificate.

To redeem these certificates, you have to log into your Marriott Bonvoy account and apply the e-certificate during booking. If you want to redeem the certificate, be sure that redeeming points is not selected as your payment option.

Hot Tip: The free night certificate will be credited to your Marriott Bonvoy account within 8 to 12 weeks after your anniversary. This is done to prevent cardmembers from getting the certificate and then canceling the card shortly before paying the annual fee.

Chase Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards

Marriott partners with 2 issuers for its co-branded credit cards.

Chase issues the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Card, and the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card.

The Marriott Boundless card is the only Chase card that offers a free night certificate automatically, however the Marriott Bountiful card offers a free night certificate after spending $15,000 in a calendar year.

Typically, free night certificates from Chase post a bit faster than those from Amex, but it can take up to 8 weeks after your account anniversary date for it to be deposited into your online Marriott Bonvoy account.

Of course, the free night certificates from Chase cards behave the same as the ones from Amex cards.

The free night certificate from the Marriott Boundless card is valid for a 1-night stay of up to 35,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, and it behaves the same as the ones from Amex cards.

These are 3 more Chase cards that are no longer open for applications but earn free night certificates every account anniversary:

  • Marriott Bonvoy™ Premier Credit Card — up to 25,000 points
  • Marriott Bonvoy™ Premier Plus Business Credit Card — up to 35,000 points
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Card — up to 50,000 points

Just like the Amex certificates, your free night certificate is valid for 1 year after being issued.

Bottom Line: Amex and Chase both have cards that offer Marriott Bonvoy free night certificates. In general, the card you end up getting depends on what card benefits you value more.

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Annual Choice Benefit

Another way you can earn free night certificates is by qualifying for one of the highest tiers of Marriott Bonvoy elite status, Titanium Elite.

When you stay at least 75 eligible nights, you will qualify for Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite status and receive a perk called an annual choice benefit that allows you to choose from 1 of the following options:

  • 5 Suite Night Awards
  • 1 Free Night Award (valid for up to 40,000 points)
  • The ability to gift Gold Elite status
  • 40% off your favorite hotel bed
  • 5 Elite Night Credits
  • A $100 charity donation

In general, most people choose 5 Suite Night Awards as the annual choice benefit, but it’s still possible to get a free night certificate if you designate it as your Titanium annual choice benefit.

New Member Paid Stay Promotions

Marriott Bonvoy frequently circulates a promotion where new members who sign up for a Marriott Bonvoy account will earn a free night after completing 2 stays within a certain timeframe.

This applies only to new members only, not existing Marriott Bonvoy members, and free night certificates are good for up to 25,000 points and have the same 1-year validity as all other free night certificates.

Hot Tip: You can now “top up” your free night certificate by using up to 15,000 points. So a 50,000-point certificate can be used in conjunction with points for a night costing up to 65,000 points.

Who would’ve thought you can redeem a 25,000-point free night certificate at a Ritz-Carlton property? Well, it’s possible, and it can provide tremendous value.

One such property is The Ritz-Carlton, Nanjing, a posh 5-star hotel in the historic city of Nanjing. The property soars a whopping 62 stories into the sky with rooms starting at 538 square feet.

Each room has floor-to-ceiling windows, a windowfront tub with a TV, a window-side seating area, 600-thread-count Frette bedding, a Nespresso machine, and dual vanities in the bathroom.

You’ll find 5 dining options here, ranging from a French-Chinese fusion restaurant to a traditional Cantonese restaurant and a rooftop cocktail bar. Plus, there’s a Club Lounge, a full spa on the 40th floor, a gym, an indoor pool with a skyline view, a business center, and tons of meeting space.

Award nights typically range from 20,000 to 40,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, and cash rates go from $230 to $350 per night, with an average nightly cost of $275.

4. The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin (China)

The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin is another great option for using your 25,000-point free night certificate. This opulent hotel in the heart of downtown presents an old-world vibe but maintains the utmost in luxury.

Guest rooms come with an ornate chandelier, a marble bathroom, and other fine amenities. Also, the property has 3 restaurants, a lobby lounge serving cocktails and signature Afternoon Tea, a spa, a gym, an indoor pool, a Club Lounge, and meeting and event venues.

Award nights usually run from 20,000 to 30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, while cash rates range from $200 to $325 per night with an average room rate of $270 per night, inclusive of taxes and fees.

5. The Ritz-Carlton, Almaty (Kazakhstan)

Our very last property on the list is The Ritz-Carlton, Almaty, located in the heart of Kazakhstan’s largest metropolis. This luxury hotel boasts jaw-dropping views of the Alatau Mountains from its home in the Esentai Tower.

Each room has at least 431 square feet of space, panoramic views of either the mountains or the city, a marble bathroom with a separate rain shower and bathtub, dual vanities, Asprey bath amenities, plush terry robes, and a full minibar.

There are 2 full-service restaurants, 2 bars and lounges, and a chocolate shop. You’ll also find a full spa, a pool, a gym, a staffed business center, a Club Lounge, and much more.

Typically, the hotel charges up to 30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, making it an option (on eligible nights) for your 25,000-point free night certificate. Paid rates range from $240 to $320 per night, with an average of about $250 per night.

Final Thoughts

There are so many different ways to use your Marriott Bonvoy free night certificates. Naturally, you’ll get the best value with higher-end redemptions due to the higher cash prices you’d otherwise pay for your stay, but it’s possible to get some incredible value even with 25,000-point free night certificates.

As I was looking at the JW Marriott in Brickell, Fla, I found a parking fee totaling $51,68 AND a High Speed: Check email + browse the Web for 12.95 USD/day
Enhanced High Speed: Video chat, download large files + stream video for 19.95 USD/day, Certainly deters me from booking this hotel with extravagant fees.

Can you even find a date where you can book for 50,000 points??? No, this Bonvoy free night is a scam. Useless.

I just looked at the Corfu property in Greece. For a three-night stay in May 2022 it is 100,000 points; no 35k certificate to be had. Sad at the devaluation!

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you for pointing that out. We are in the process of updating this post so that all featured hotels reflect their most up-to-date award categories. Thanks for reading!

As of April 2022, many of these properties have raised their points, rendering this list a bit outdated. Make sure you double check first. The 35K ones are now 38K, just out of reach of the 35K category.

Hi Steve,

Yes, Marriott has gone fully dynamic now, but that does not necessarily mean that every hotel featured has increased above 35k. In fact, I’ve actually seen a few of these hotels that price lower than 35k now on certain dates. Check for dates during the week, and in the off-season for better pricing.

Finally, the coronavirus is kind of over, and I booked a trip to Japan.
I was so excited to use my free night cert of 50,000+15,000 for the first time during my trip to Japan.
But the luxury brand you mention, they are way out of the range for any dates of the month, seems 70K range is the lowest.
And, all of the Ritz-Carlton in Japan are not eligible for point stay. I am so disappointed.
I will not renew my Amex Marriott card next time.

Hi Mia. Sorry for your disappointment. Hotels rooms are subject to availability and with Japan opening up, I’m sure the hotels will be busy. I wouldn’t give up just because your hotel(s) of choice are not available. There are so many additional options for using your free night certificate and you have an entire year to do so. Good luck with your travels.

I have been looking for anywhere in Florida to use my 35k award. I’ve been looking since March. I have not found one! It will now expire June 2. I had been a Platinum elite member for some time. I have now been demoted. lol Marriott has turned into a farce in terms of their benefits unless you are a biz traveler and the company’s paying and you can stack up the points. I guess that is just the way the trend continues. When you click on points/certificates, only points come up as an option when you go to select a room. Marriott makes you dig deep only to find out even though there is a room for 29k points, the hotel does not take certificates. I’ve found 23 hotels to date. It’s a joke.
Just my view.

Hi there C. I just did a quick search on the Marriott Bonvoy website for possibilities prior to June 2. I used Saturday, May 28/29, changed the filter to points/awards of 40,000 points or less, and 151 properties came up for Florida. I clicked on several and all were available with a free night certificate. The Boca Raton Marriott, for example, was 32,000 points and was available with a free night certificate, plus so many others. Try the filters as it will make your search easier.

It says this blog was updated June 9th 2023 and it is now June 16th 2023. I looked up just three locations on this list and both were not available for free night awards. Really judging the credibility of this post or my certificates are broken. I have 5 MB Boundless 50k PTS Free Night Awards. The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert (United Arab Emirates),The St. Regis Langkawi (Malaysia) and The Ritz-Carlton, Montréal (Canada).

Hi Tyrell. I found dates throughout September, October, and November (2023) with wide availability for the Ritz-Carlton Langkawi and the Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah for award nights. The Ritz-Carlton Montreal is also widely available on points but the amount per night exceeds the maximum for free night certificates.
