American Airlines has announced its most significant expansion in Europe since 2019, with new routes to Barcelona (BCN), Copenhagen (CPH), Naples (NAP), Nice (NCE), and Venice (VCE) slated to be added to the carrier’s route network.

Three of these destinations are brand-new for American — but all of these new routes will help to expand the airline’s footprint in Europe, where it currently relies heavily on partner British Airways to provide connections through its base in London.

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about American’s exciting European announcement!

New Routes for Summer 2024

American Airlines has announced 4 new routes and 1 route resumption. And 3 of the destinations are entirely new to the airline’s network.

Here’s a look at what’s coming for next summer:

  • Chicago (ORD) to Venice (VCE): Daily flights resume June 5, 2024, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-8.
  • Dallas (DFW) to Barcelona (BCN): Daily flights begin June 5, 2024, and will be operated by a Boeing 777-200.
  • Philadelphia (PHL) to Copenhagen (CPH): Daily flights begin June 6, 2024, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-9.
  • Philadelphia (PHL) to Naples (NAP): Daily flights begin June 5, 2024, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-8.
  • Philadelphia (PHL) to Nice (NCE): Daily flights begin May 6, 2024, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-9.

All aircraft feature 3 cabins: business class, premium economy, and economy, which will give customers a range of options when it comes to comfort and pricing preferences.

The 3 new destinations should be particularly exciting for customers, for a few reasons:

  • American currently doesn’t serve any destination in Scandinavia. Adding Copenhagen to its route map allows AA flyers to not only explore Denmark and the many charms of its capital city, but also to use the city as a jumping-off point to see other destinations in the region like Oslo, Stockholm, and more.
  • American has a decent presence in Italy, but it’s centered around major hotspots like Milan, Rome, and Venice. Naples is the gateway to the ever-popular Amalfi Coast, so it gives travelers an incredibly convenient option for accessing this summer hotspot.
  • In France, American only serves Paris currently. Nice is the gateway to the French Riviera and a hotspot for Americans looking for a warm-weather getaway. Both Delta and United have served the city successfully for years, and they can command hefty premiums on fares thanks to the well-heeled customers who often choose the South of France for a vacation destination.

Along with the new route announcements, American shared that it will restart flying to some seasonal destinations — including Athens (ATH) and Dublin (DUB) — earlier next year. Also, it will increase some European routes from seasonal to year-round service.

Hot Tip:

Don’t expect great award rates on these new routes. As with most new routes, award prices tend to be high and will settle over time.

Final Thoughts

This expansion for American Airlines is greatly welcomed, as the carrier has been slow to expand internationally in recent years. Copenhagen, Naples, and Nice are brand-new destinations for the airline and will serve as key launch points for those that wish to explore some of the most popular areas of Europe.
