Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is the 12th busiest airport in the U.S. based on 2019 passenger numbers (46,336,452). EWR is a major hub for United Airlines, which operates from each of the airport’s 3 terminals and has sole occupation of Terminal C.

Although none of the airport’s 3 terminals are physically connected to each other, it’s easy to travel between them and the parking garages by hopping on the regular AirTrain service.

Terminal A

Terminal B

Terminal C

EWR Airport Terminals

Newark Airport is an oval shape, with 2 of the terminals, short-term parking lots, and road system on the inside and the departure concourses on the outside.

Terminals A and B are located next to each other, but are not directly connected via any walkways or bridges, and Terminal C is located a little further away. Passengers must ride the AirTrain or shuttle bus to connect between all 3 terminals.

Terminal A

Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal A. Image Credit: Newark Liberty International Airport

Terminal A is the newest of all the terminals, having opened at the beginning of 2023. The bright and spacious terminal is a welcomed contrast to the old building and is able to accommodate an additional 4 million passengers annually. Flights within the U.S. and Canada operate from Terminal A.

Terminal A has 33 gates split across 3 concourses. Gates A1 to A6 are located in the south concourses, gates A8 to A27 are located in the east concourse, and gates A30 to A34 are located in the north concourse.

All concourses are served by 1 central security checkpoint, so passengers can walk freely between the 3 concourses without having to re-clear security. The majority of shops and restaurants can be found in the central atrium after you clear security, with only a small selection of concessions located near the gates.

Terminal A will eventually have 4 lounges — an American Admirals Club, a Delta Sky Club, a United Club, and a signature American Express Centurion Lounge — due to open later in 2023.

Star Alliance passengers can connect to the other terminals by riding the courtesy shuttle bus departing from near gate A28. Other passengers will be required to exit the terminal, ride the AirTrain, and re-clear security at the next terminal.

Terminal B

Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal B. Image Credit: Newark Liberty International Airport

Terminal B is the main international terminal at EWR and consists of 3 concourses. Concourse B1 has 10 gates numbered B40, B41A and B, B42, B44, B45A and B, B46, B46B, and B47; Concourse B2 has 8 gates numbered B51 to B58; Concourse B3 has 9 gates numbered B60 to B68.

There are not many shops and restaurants in the B2 concourse, so passengers will need to make use of the facilities within the other 2 concourses. As the 3 security checkpoints each lead into a specific concourse, passengers are not able to move freely between the 3 concourses without having to re-clear security again.

Terminal B has a British Airways Lounge, Delta Sky Club, Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounges, SAS Lounge, and a USO Lounge.

Terminal C

Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal C. Image Credit: Newark Liberty International Airport

Terminal C is operated solely by United Airlines for domestic and international flights. Like the other terminals, Terminal C is split across 3 concourses — C1, C2, and C3.

Concourse C1 has 21 gates numbered C70 to C75, C80 to C88, and C90 to C99; Concourse C2 has 12 gates numbered C101 to C105 and C107 to C113; Concourse C3 has 19 gates numbered C120 to C123, C125-C128, C130V, W, X, Y, Z, and C132 to C139.

The 3 security checkpoints lead into a central concourse area, so there is no need to re-clear security to enjoy the terminal’s good selection of shops and restaurants.

Terminal C has a United Polaris Lounge and 3 United Club Lounges. To connect to Terminals A or B, passengers can ride the shuttle bus that departs from near gate C71.

Inter-terminal Transport

Walking

EWR’s 3 terminals are not directly connected, so passengers are not able to walk between connections and must ride the Air Train or terminal shuttle bus.

Image Credit: Newark Liberty International Airport

The above image shows the estimated walking times from when you have cleared the security checkpoint to the gate.

Passengers (excluding international arrivals) can freely walk between the 3 concourses in Terminals A and C as the security checkpoints lead into a central area. Passengers walking between concourses in Terminal B have to re-clear security as there is a checkpoint at the entrance of all 3 concourses.

Airside Transport (Inside the Secure Area)

Newark Liberty International Airport shuttle bus. Image Credit: Newark Liberty International Airport

United Airlines operates a courtesy shuttle bus to transport Star Alliance flight passengers between terminals.

These buses depart from near gates A28, B68, and C71 and run inside of the secure area, so passengers are not required to re-clear security on arrival at the next terminal. This excludes passengers arriving on international flights as they are required to pass through customs and immigration on arrival, which requires re-clearing security again.

Buses between Terminals A and C run from 4 a.m. to 12 a.m. and buses from Terminal B to Terminals A and C run from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Landside Transport (Outside of the Secure Area)

Newark Liberty International Airport AirTrain. Image Credit: Newark Liberty International Airport

The AirTrain is an easy mode of transport to get around Newark Airport, however, it operates outside of the secure area, so it’s necessary to re-clear security at the next terminal.

Within airport property, the train is free to ride, and this includes journeys between any of the terminals, parking lots, and rental car center. For journeys between the airport and Newark Liberty Airport Station, there is a fee of $8 (free for children under 11 years old). From Newark Liberty Airport Station, the journey time to the individual terminals are:

  • Terminal C: 7 minutes
  • Terminal B: 9 minutes
  • Terminal A: 15 minutes

Trains depart every 3 to 5 minutes from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and every 15 minutes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Security and Customs at EWR

There are 6 security checkpoints at Newark Airport — 1 in Terminal A, 3 in Terminal B, and 2 in Terminal C  — and updated waiting times can be viewed on the homepage of the airport’s website.

Customs and immigration can be found in Terminal B and Terminal C as these terminals operate international flights.

TSA PreCheck

EWR has dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes at each checkpoint in Terminals A, B, and C.

The airport also has a TSA PreCheck Enrollment Center located in Terminal C, level 1. The opening hours are Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Hot Tip: As one of the 5 worst U.S. airports for longest average security wait times, TSA Precheck has also launched the ability to create a reservation for your screening time — thus further reducing your time spent in line.

Global Entry

EWR has Global Entry kiosks to expedite clearance of passengers arriving on international flights. For those passengers who have been conditionally approved and require an interview, there is an Enrollment Center in Terminal B on level 1, open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Enrollment on Arrival is available in Terminal B between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. and in Terminal C from 11 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mobile Passport

EWR participates in Mobile Passport Control, and eligible passengers can present their instant receipt and passport to a CBP agent on arrival at the airport.

CLEAR

CLEAR allows expedited security clearance at EWR for approved members and is available in the following locations:

    • Terminal A: 4 a.m. to 9 p.m.
    • Terminal B, Concourse B2: 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Terminal C:
      • Standard security lane: 4:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
      • Lane for PreCheck-eligible travelers: 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

EWR Airport Lounges

EWR has 10+ lounges with some exclusively for passengers flying in premium cabins or for elite tier frequent flyer members, and some available to purchase day passes. Many personal and business credit cards offer complimentary lounge access as well.

Airport Dining and Drinks at EWR

EWR has 150+ restaurants, bars, cafes, and grab-and-go food outlets. The majority of restaurants are past security, but there is also a reasonable selection of places to grab a coffee or quick bite pre-security, especially in Terminal B.

The selection of eateries can be viewed on the airport’s website.

Final Thoughts

As with most major U.S. airports, EWR is undergoing a huge redevelopment to accommodate growing passenger capacity.

The recent Terminal A redevelopment plan has built a 1 million square foot terminal that will be used for domestic operations and replaces the old Terminal A. Many of the facilities and gates opened at the beginning of 2023, with more set to open throughout the year.

EWR was known and criticized for its congested pick-up and drop-off areas and long security wait times, so the new Terminal A will give welcome relief to its occasional and frequent flyers.

Hello Amar,
Thank you for the EWR maps and airline details. This was very helpful. My question: How long does it take to get bags and clear customs at EWR? In July, I have a 3.5 hour layover to land, get bags, clear customs, and catch an ongoing domestic flight on United (I will have to check-in bags again). With covid interruptions, I was not able to book the international TAP airline flight to my final destination. I do have Global entry for US customs and Pre-check for US travelers. Is 3.5 hours enough time?

Hi Terry,

Yes, 3.5 hours should be more than enough time for you to get your bags and clear customs, especially if you have Global Entry.

I am taking an international flight into EWR (Terminal B). I have a domestic flight on American Airlines from Terminal A. Can I clear customs in Terminal B and check in my bags for the American Airlines flight at Terminal B itself or will I have to take my bags via the Air Train to Terminal A and check in for my domestic flight?

Hi Ahana,

You will clear customs as soon as you get off the plane in Terminal B. Afterwards you can pick up your luggage and there should be an expedited drop off lane for passengers that are continuing onward. After that, you can proceed to Terminal A and clear security for your next flight.

Safe travels!

I have a friend who will have a connection flight to Portugal at this airport, I’m assuming international passengers with connecting flights can’t leave the airport but is there any way or a certain area within the airport where I can meet my friend to be able to catch up while he is waiting for his connecting flight?

Hi Efrain,

Where is your friend traveling from? As long as it is not from a country with US visa requirements they should be able to exit the airport terminal to meet you, but they will need to re-clear security afterward.

I am traveling internationally. I need a COVID PCR test to get on the plane. I understand I can take it at terminal C and get it back in one hour or less. Is my information correct?

Hi Sandy,

Yes, Newark offers PCR testing at Terminal C, level 1, near the baggage carousel 7.

I see that you wrote that you can take the Airside bus from terminal B to terminal C. In my case, I am flying from terminal B, but I want to go to the Polaris lounge in terminal C. Are you sure I can take the bus airside from B to C?

Hi Gab,

Yes, you should be able to take the airside bus from Terminal B to C. Safe travels!

I am thinking of flying from Washington (DCA) to Israel via EWR on United flights (the first operated by GoJet/United Express) on a Monday afternoon. It has a 1 hour 16 minute connection time. Is that sufficient? (I note from that flight’s history, it tends to arrive around 20 minutes before the scheduled time.)
Does one need to claim the bag and re-check and go through security & check-in on arriving at EWR or is there an expedited track for those making a connecting flight like this one?

Jarrod West

November 09, 2021

Hi Jeff,

Yes, that should be plenty of time and you should not need to re-check your bags but you will need to re-clear security if you have to switch terminals – which is likely. Safe travels!

Any idea what time curbside check-in opens at Terminal C? We have a 6 am Domestic flight and my preference would be to use curbside for luggage check. Are they there at 5 am?

December 20, 2021

Hi Jonathan,

As far as I know, curbside check-in is still closed at Newark.

I will be taking united from Mumbai to DCA via EWR. Once I reach ewr from Mumbai, do I have to take bags out or do any security checking at ewr? Or do I do that directly at DCA? Also while returning from DCA, do I have to take bags out or any security or immigration at ewr? Please advise.

Hi Samir,

You will have to clear immigration and re-check your bags when you arrive to EWR from Mumbai. However, on your return flight, your bags will be checked through to your final destination of Mumbai.

I am taking an international flight (from Germany with United Airlines) into EWR (Terminal B). Then I have a domestic flight on United Airlines from Terminal C(?) to Austin. Do I have to clear Passport Control/Immigration in Terminal B and check in my bags again for the United Airlines flight at Terminal C to Austin? Thank you for your help.

Jarrod West

January 04, 2022

Hi Achim,

That is correct. You’ll clear customs in Terminal B and then re-check your luggage in Terminal C. Safe travels!

Interesting that 2 different answers were given for similar questions regarding re-checking bags. We flew into Newark from Rome into Terminal B. Happily after customs and claiming bags we walked to the “connections re-check bag” line and dropped them off before continuing onto train to terminal C, then security for our next domestic flight. Oddly, just 3 days later ( Jan 5) the rest of our family did the same route BUT after claiming their luggage at terminal B, they were told to take their luggage with them to terminal C to have them re-checked there. What a hassle it was. Any idea why they couldn’t just drop their bags at the expedited bag drop off lane in terminal B like we did?

Depending on the arrival time. The baggage recheck counter in terminal B just out side of customs does not stay open all day. When it closes for the day pax must take their luggage to the Check in counter of the airline for their next flight. When it is open bags are rechecked there for ongoing flights. Pax must make sure the baggage is checked thru to their final destination.

Have the rules changed for non-passenger access to EWR now that COVID restrictions have been lifted in many places? Will my husband be able to accompany me to the security checkpoint?

Flying Delta from GPT to EWR. Switching to TAP going to Spain. Both are in Terminal B. After I collect my luggage from Delta will I go through Security before checking in with TAP? Thanks

Hi there,

If the 2 flights are not on the same ticket, you will need to collect your bags, recheck them, and go through security again.

Hi,

I am travelling with small kids. I have a flight from Atlanta GA reaching at terminal B of Newark airport at 12:45 past midnight. Than my next flight is at 07:50 to London from same terminal. What should I do, as I have almost 4/5 hours at night with kids. Is there an area on airport where we can rest/sleep?

Thanks

Chris Hassan

May 25, 2022

Hi Sid,

If you are going to sleep at the airport you will likely be asked to move to pre-security. With small children, it might be worth it to get a hotel room nearby for a few hours to rest up for the flight to London.

I am at EWR now. You can not get from one concourse to another behind security in Terminal B. I at at B1 and wanted to go to B2 but you have to exit and re-enter security. Annoying.

I walk from terminal C to B often. There is a walkway and it’s covered for bad weather. You can not walk to the New Terminal A.

The traffic congestion at Terminals A and C continue to be traumatic regardless of time/day of week. What is the long term strategy to fix the problem? Other airports move ride apps to the garages – can we do this?

Hi M – You can explore Newark’s dining guide and filter by terminal and pre-security. Thanks for reading!
