Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is a large and extremely busy airport.

In fact, ATL is the busiest airport in the world, transporting over 100 million passengers a year. Considering the airport’s size, the straightforward and functional layout is easy to navigate, especially if you’ve done your research before your visit.

Below, you’ll find all the details you need to get between terminals, the locations of each concourse, and what to do when you have a connecting flight.

ATL Airport Layout

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport map. Image Credit: City of Atlanta

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has 2 terminals: the domestic terminal (or main terminal) and the international terminal. There are also 7 concourses that are airside areas with additional shops and restaurants, and this is where the gates are located for flight departures.

You’ll see from the map above that the airport is laid out a bit like a fishbone, with the domestic terminal as the head, the international terminal as the tail, and the concourses as the ribs. The spine is an underground transportation system connecting everything together.

If you’re flying from the international terminal, you can pass through security in the domestic terminal, and vice versa, providing you hold a valid boarding pass. If you’re flying with checked luggage then you would need to check whether your airline has check-in facilities at the terminal of your choice, or if you’re flying with carry-on baggage only, then you would need to have checked-in online and have a printed or mobile boarding card.

You have several options for traveling between the terminals and concourses.

ATL Ground Transportation Pre-security (Landside)

You can travel between the domestic and international terminals (without passing through security) by taking the airport shuttle service.

If arriving from the MARTA station or from other entry points on the western side of the domestic terminal, you need to enter through the W2 door into the south terminal baggage claim area. From here, you can follow signs to ground transportation where you can pick up the shuttle bus to go to the international terminal.

From the international terminal, you can pick up the shuttle bus from the northern area of the terminal through doors A1, A2, or A3. The shuttle journey between terminals takes around 12 minutes.

ATL Ground Transportation Post-security (Airside)

Plane Train. Image Credit: City of Atlanta

The Plane Train, located on level 0, is one of the easiest ways to get around ATL, operating 24 hours a day and departing every 2 minutes. Take an escalator or elevator down to the lower level where the Plane Train will be signposted.

Running on a 3-mile loop, the Plane Train runs between the domestic terminal (baggage reclaim) and Concourse F (international terminal) stopping at Concourses T, A, B, C, D, and E along the way. A countdown timer alerts passengers to the next Plane Train arrival and there are automatic announcements and maps onboard to help you plan your route.

Escalators and elevators are accessible from each stop, and there is little or no gap between the train and platform. If you require any wheelchair assistance, you can let airport staff know at security and someone will assist you.

You also have the option of walking along the transportation mall that is on the same level as the Plane Train (level 0). There are moving walkways along the way and some interesting art and history exhibits along the way.

The airport signs indicate that it’s a 5-minute walk between concourses (apart from E to F, which is 10 minutes) so keep that in mind if you’re in a rush. For example, walking from Concourse A to F will take around 35 minutes, whereas the Plane Train will take just a few minutes and departs every 2 minutes.

Once you have arrived at your departing concourse, you will need to take the escalator or elevator up to departures (level 2) where you can walk to your gate. There are no moving walkways along the individual concourses so electronic carts are available to aid passengers with any mobility issues.

ATL Domestic Terminal

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport domestic terminal. Image Credit: Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The domestic terminal is located on the western side of the airport and is further separated into north and south by an atrium. Delta Air Lines occupies the south terminal with its own baggage claim area and curbside check-in.

Other domestic airlines, like Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and JetBlue Airways, operate from the north terminal with a baggage claim area and check-in facilities. United has a dedicated baggage claim area located on ground level that is accessible via several escalators and elevators.

The MARTA train station is located in the domestic terminal, so if you were arriving or departing from the domestic terminal but flying from the international terminal, you would need to make use of the ground transportation options covered earlier.

The atrium area has a range of shops, restaurants, and different airport services, with more shops and restaurants once you pass through security into the concourses.

There are 3 security checkpoints in the domestic terminal: the main checkpoint, which is the largest, the north checkpoint, and the south checkpoint. Once you’ve cleared security, you’ll arrive at Concourse T.

Gates are marked according to their concourse, for example, T14 is in Concourse T. All concourses, apart from Concourse T, have gates on either side with odd-numbered gates on the eastern side and even-numbered gates on the western side.

Each concourse is about half a mile in length with the entry point in the middle, so you would need to allow around 5 minutes to walk to the furthest gate from the halfway entry point.

Concourse T

Concourse T is a part of the domestic terminal building and serves gates T1 to T21. Delta, WestJet, United, and other carriers operate from this concourse.

When passing through security from the domestic terminal, you will arrive directly into the concourse, where depending on your gate number, you’ll need to head right or left. Gates T1 to T8 are to the right and gates T9 to T21 are to the left.

Concourse A

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Concourse A. Image Credit: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Concourse A is made up of 28 gates many of which are operated by Delta. There is a Delta Ticket Service Center located opposite of gate A18 and a Delta Sky Club lounge near gate A17.

If arriving from the domestic terminal, then gates A1 to A18 are to the right, and A19 to A34 are to the left.

Concourse B

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Concourse B. Image Credit: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Concourse B has 34 physical gates but the 34th gate is actually labeled as B36. This may be to remain consistent with ATL’s odd and even numbering dictating which side of the concourse the gate is on.

If arriving from the domestic terminal then gates B1 to B18 are to the right and gates B19 to B36 are to the left. As with Concourse A, Delta dominates this concourse but other airlines do operate from here as well.

There’s a Delta Sky Club lounge in the central area.

Concourse C

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Concourse C. Image Credit: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Concourse C has 47 physical gates but the gates are numbered C1 to C7, C9, C10, C12 to C17, C20 to C22, C30, C33 to C37, C40 to C43, C46, C47, C49, C50, C52, and C55. If you approach Concourse C from the domestic terminal, then gates C1 to C22 would be to the right, and gates C30 to C55 to the left.

There is a Delta Sky Club lounge at gate C37.

Concourse D

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Concourse D. Image Credit: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Concourse D has 39 physical gates. If arriving from the domestic terminal, then gates D1 to D16, including D1A, are located to the right, and gates D21 to D36 are located to the left.

The concourse has a Delta Sky Club lounge located near gate D27.

ATL International Terminal

The international terminal is located on the eastern side of the airport with most international flights operating from Concourses E and F. Departures are on level 2 where check-in desks are available for airlines such as Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, and British Airways.

Level 2 is also where passengers pass through security to go, airside, into Concourse F. From here, you can take the escalator or elevator to level 0 and ride the Plane Train or walk through a pedestrian walkway to Concourse E. You’re also able to Plane Train or walk to any of the other concourses for the domestic terminal. The time it takes to walk from Concourse F to E is around 10 minutes.

Arrivals are on level U with baggage claim and ground transportation services for taxis, rental cars, and hotel/park-ride shuttles. This is also where the shuttle departs for the domestic terminal.

The level 3 mezzanine is home to The Club at ATL, and Delta Sky Club lounges along with a few shops, and restaurants.

Concourse E

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Concourse E. Image Credit: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Concourse E consists of 29 gates numbered E1 to E12, E14 to E18, and E26 to E36. To reach Concourse E from the international terminal, passengers must pass through security into Concourse F where you can then ride the Plane Train or walk on level U to Concourse E.

If you arrive from the pedestrian walkway on the east side of Concourse E, you’ll have gates E18, E16, and E14 on the right side of the concourse, and gates E17 and E15 on the left.

For all other gates, you’ll need to walk through the concourse until you reach a cross-section where gates E1 to E12 are to the left and E26 to E36 are to the right.

If arriving from the Plane Train on the west side of Concourse E, you’ll walk into the cross-section where gates E1 to E12 are to the right, and gates E26 to E36 are to the left. For gates E14 to E18, you’ll need to continue straight across the cross-section.

Concourse E has a Delta Sky Club lounge opposite gate E14.

Concourse F

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Concourse F. Image Credit: Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Concourse F is airside of the international terminal. For departing passengers, once you have passed through security, you’ll arrive into the transition hall of Concourse F where you can take an elevator or escalator to level U for onward travel to other concourses.

Concourse F consists of 12 gates numbered F1 to F10, F12, and F14. If passing through the international terminal security checkpoint, then gates F1 to F10 are to the left, and gates F12 and F14 are to the right. Concourse F is about half the length of the other concourses, measuring about a quarter of a mile, so once you arrive airside from security, it should only take a few minutes to walk to your departure gate.

On the arrivals level, passengers will pass through Passport Control before arriving into the baggage claim area within the international terminal.

Flight Connections at ATL

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Concourse F. Image Credit: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport

ATL’s relatively straightforward layout makes flight connections fairly easy. Regardless of where you are traveling to or from, all passengers must pass through Passport Control upon arrival at ATL, and this will be processed within the concourse that you arrive at.

All passengers also have to proceed to the baggage claim area to pass through customs. There will be signs for connecting-flight passengers that will lead to a baggage check room to drop off your bag for the next leg of your journey, providing your luggage has been tagged for your final destination.

For any passengers that have booked an onward flight independently, unless the carrier has a check-in desk at the international terminal, then you would need to take the shuttle bus to the domestic terminal to check in for your next flight.

Domestic to domestic, or domestic to international connecting passengers do not have to clear security again.

However, any international-to-domestic or international-to-international connecting passengers will need to clear security again. Once you pass security, you can take the Plane Train or the pedestrian walkway to your departure gate.

Accessibility

Both terminals and all 7 concourses are accessible to passengers with mobility concerns, disabilities, and wheelchair users. There are multiple elevators to connect to the different levels, including Level 0 to access the underground tunnels, and the Plane Train that is also accessible for wheelchair users.

Final Thoughts

Overall, ATL’s functional layout and clear signage mean it’s a relatively easy airport to navigate. As long as you’re aware of which terminal you’re departing from, or that you have the ability to pass through the alternative terminal, navigating ATL can be a breeze. Even if you find yourself at the wrong end of the airport, the free shuttle bus can get you where you need to go in a reasonable 12 minutes.

As ATL serves so many passengers, allow plenty of time to clear security, and to arrive at your departure gate. Although you may try to get ahead start by researching what gate number past flights have arrived at, these gates are always subject to change. Leave plenty of time to catch the Plane Train or walk through the pedestrian mall while admiring some of the cool and quirky art exhibits.

I have only a 40 minutes layover on my flight from Birmingham, AL to CDG in Paris, France. Is that enough time to get to my gate?

Jarrod West

September 10, 2021

Hi Erin,

It might be a little tight, but as long as your first flight arrives on time you should be able to make it. Safe travels!

Hi there, my friend and I will be staying at a hotel near the airport and that provides shuttle service. We would have come in earlier in the day and checked our bags at the hotel and then we want to come back later and take the train to Peachtree Center. Is it possible to access the restaurants in the concourses without a boarding pass when going through security? Thanks in advance!

Jarrod West

September 16, 2021

Hi Al,

Yes, you should be able to access any restaurant without a boarding pass as long as it is not past security.

I’m flying from Charleston, WV to Atlanta to Jax. Using straight delta flights. Do delta planes usually get to board at the same terminal/concourse? In other words, will I have an easy time finding and boarding my next plane to Jax?

Jarrod West

September 22, 2021

Hi Sheila,

Yes, it is unlikely that you will have to switch terminals in order to get to the gate of your next flight during your layover in Atlanta. Safe travels!

I have a flight from DTW to ATL that lands at 6:02pm and an international connection to REC at 7:10pm, booked under the same ticket. Is this enough time? Do we need to pass through security check again? Thank you.

Jarrod West

October 04, 2021

Hi Raissa,

If you are changing Terminals at the airport, then yes, you would need to re-clear security. If your second flight departs from the same Terminal then you will not. Either way, you should have enough time to make your next flight as long as your first arrives on time. Safe travels!

I am flying for the first time and really could use some help. I’m not sure I understand the domestic to International or the International to Domestic customs/immigration and baggage check order.
The first part of the trip I am flying out of Indiana on Delta and arriving in ATL at the South Terminal Gate D39, to go to the Delta international gate E08 to depart to BOG Colombia. All of these are on the same ticket. What are my steps from landing in ATL Delta domestic to boarding for my International flight to BOG Colombia? Is there anything I need to do special with my luggage? I am TSA preCheck too.

Return Trip
What are my steps when I return from BOG to fly back to Indiana? Do I get my checked luggage as soon as I deplane in ATL (I Gate 34), and then go through customs or do I go through customs and THEN get my luggage? Then I am to recheck my bag so I can fly domestic to Indiana? Where do I recheck the luggage? I’ll be flying out of South Terminal D35 back to Indiana. I will only have 1 hr 55 mins to get my connection in domestic. What is the fastest way to get from International Terminal to Domestic South Terminal Gate 35?

I tried looking at the airport map and although I can see the places, not sure what level these are on and how to get there the fastest. Thank you!

October 05, 2021

Hi Catrina,

For your outbound trip, your baggage should be checked all the way through to your final destination of Colombia. When you arrive in Atlanta, you will need to go to the International Terminal where you will need to re-clear security, and then you can proceed to your gate.

On your way home, as soon as your plane lands at ATL you will first need to go through Customs and Border Control. After that, you will proceed to the baggage claim area and pick up your bag. From there you can take the Plane Train to your next Terminal, re-check your luggage at one of the Delta customer service desks, then re-clear security and head to your gate.

I hope this helps! Safe travels!

I am flying from Miami to Bermuda through Atlanta. Is a 50-minute layover enough time to get from Terminal S to Terminal I? Will I need to clear security again? What is the quickest way to travel between terminals?

Jarrod West

October 19, 2021

Hi LC,

Yes, 50 minutes should be enough time as long as your first flight arrives on time. The quickest way to get to Terminal I is to take the plane train. Safe travels!

Nora

October 28, 2021

I am traveling to Buenos Aires, Argentina with Delta (all on the same ticket). The first flight is from Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta, then from Atlanta to Buenos Aires. I don’t have baggage to check, only my carry-on. The trip is in 3 weeks so at this point I can not check the Terminal/gate. I wonder if: 1) Is 1 hour and 20 minutes enough time? 2) Where should I clear security at the Domestic terminal or at the International terminal or both? 3) Would it be best to take the Sky Train? Thanks for the help!

Jarrod West

October 29, 2021

Hi Nora,

1 hour and 20 minutes should be plenty of time. In Atlanta, you’ll clear security in the International Terminal since you are boarding an international flight. And yes, taking the Sky Train between Terminal would be your best bet.

Jarrod West

November 22, 2021

Yes, 2 hours should be plenty of time. Safe travels!

Jessica

November 20, 2021

Hello! My mother will be traveling from Brazil to San Diego, with first port of entry at Atlanta (Hartsfield International Airpor – Delta Airlines). Then, in ATL she will take the flight to San Diego, CA. She is still learning English (Basic to intermediary level), so how and where she can ask for help to go through CBP (translation) if she needs to?
Also, after she collects her luggage and get through customs, where can she drop off for her next flight (she also will fly with Delta)?
Will she be required to show the COVID-19 negative test to board this connection? She must present it to board in Brazil already.
Thank you

Jarrod West

November 22, 2021

Hi Jessica,

If she speaks to one of the CBP agents after she gets off the plane they can find someone to help translate for her. After she collects her luggage she should head to the Termianla she will be flying out of, and then proceed to the Delta baggage drop desk once she gets there. From there she will re-clear security and head to her gate, but she should not need to show proof of a negative covid test for the flight to San Diego.

I am arriving from Toronto Canada and I only have a 40 minute layover to take the connection to another flight. These 2 flights are both under the same ticket and airline Delta. I am afraid that there is a chance my family and I won’t be able to clear customs and make it to the gate in time. What should i do?

Christine Krzyszton

November 30, 2021

Hi Lily. I would contact Delta and tell them your concerns. An International flight connection of 40 minutes would not be sufficient and they may be able to schedule you on the next flight.

My boyfriend and I have flights on the same day from the Atlanta airport. His flight is International and departs at 11:05am.
My flight is domestic and departs at 12:44pm. Can I go with him up to his boarding gate and stay with him until he departs?

Jarrod West

December 02, 2021

Hi Christine,

Since you have a boarding pass, you should be able to enter the Terminal with him. Security might tell you that you are in the wrong Terminal, but just let them know that you are accompanying your boyfriend to his gate first.

I’m arriving at Terminal F from the UK and I’m planning to meet someone arriving in Terminal T on a Domestic flight. Do I clear Customs in Terminal F, then collect my baggage in Terminal T?
Also, can you recommend a good place to meet up in Terminal T once I’ve got my baggage, please?

Thanks!

Jarrod West

December 21, 2021

Hi David,

If you’re arriving at Terminal F then you will both clear customs and collect your checked baggage in Terminal F. From there you can transfer to Terminal T via the Plane Train.

Great article on ATL airport and terminals. We are flying from Toronto, Canada to ATL, and then on to Antigua. We will have 2 checked bags and am wondering if the luggage gets transferred automatically or do we have to collect and re-drop? Sorry if this has been asked already!! Thanks for any advice. I think we only have a 51 minute layover. The whole ticket was booked as one.

Question on an overnight layover. We have a single ticket on Delta from NY to MBJ with an overnight (12.5hr) layover in ATL. Arrive ATL 9pm, depart ATL 9:45am next day. Staying at a nearby hotel with shuttle service.
1. Am I correct that we will collect our checked bags in ATL and then recheck them in the morning?
2. Where do we go in the morning for our flight to MBJ? Directly to International terminal? Or Domestic terminal, check in/check bags and PlaneTrain to departure concourse? Something else?
Thanks!

March 02, 2022

We’re arriving on Southwest Airlines from Houston, TX on Tuesday, March 8 at 12:20 pm and leaving on Delta Airlines to Knoxville, TN that afternoon at 5:55 pm. We allowed for plenty of time since we have to pick up checked luggage and make our way to the Delta check-in. It appears that Southwest arrives at Terminal S and Delta leaves from Terminal N. What is the best way to get from Southwest’s baggage claim area to Delta’s departure check in?

Jarrod West

March 07, 2022

Hi Charmaine,

Terminal S and Terminal N refer to the north and south sections of the Domestic Terminal. So you’ll easily be able to walk to the Delta desk after picking up your bags. Safe travels!

I am flying from London – JFK – Atlanta with JetBlue, with no checked in bags. Am I correct in thinking that I will need to clear security on arrival into JFK, and then need to go through the departures security again there. Then board my flight to Atlanta, and on arrival I won’t need to clear security as I’ll be on a domestic flight? Thanks in advance!

Jarrod West

March 14, 2022

Hi Howard,

Your timeline is correct, but you’ll first clear customs when you arrive at JFK. Then you’ll clear security when you get to the Terminal you’ll be flying out of.

Teresa Smith

March 22, 2022

My grandson will be flying from Boston to ATL and then to Tulsa, and then internationally. Will he need to get any checked bags from baggage claim and recheck for 2nd leg of the trip? Will he need to take Plane Train to a new Terminal or Concourse ( I get all these terms confused) for his Departure to Tulsa? Or will he be able to walk to Departure Gate from Arrival Gate? He only has 1 hr and 3 minutes.

Jarrod West

March 25, 2022

Hi Teresa,

If he is flying with the same airline for each flight then no, he should not need to re-check his baggage. Whether or not he will need to take the Plane Train to a new terminal at ATL will depend on what Terminal he flys into, and what gate his Tulsa flight will depart out of.

Adam

April 06, 2022

I am traveling from Kansas city to ATL and then to Korea. This is my first time flying with a connecting flight and internationally. My connecting flight is through Korean air and I see the Korean air service desk in the F concourse, but it’s on the other side of security. I’m just trying to figure out how to get my boarding pass without going through security again I guess. Thanks a bunch.

Jarrod West

April 07, 2022

Hi Adam,

You should be able to check-in for your flight via the airlines website or mobile app, and you can access your boarding pass from there. If you’re not able to access your boarding pass via those options then you would have no other choice but to go to the check-in desk.

Amanda Wright

April 11, 2022

I’m flying by myself from Minneapolis to Atlanta with only a 57 minute layover until my international flight to St. Maarten (SMX). All booked on one ticket all through Delta. Will I have enough time to get to the international termianl? How do I get there? I’m so anxious.

Jarrod West

April 12, 2022

Hi Amanda,

Once you arrive to Atlanta you can take the Plane Train to the International Terminal. You will see tons of signs posted for the train that will lead the way, but if you get lost ask someone and they will point you in the right direction. 57 minutes should be plenty of time as long as your first flight arrives on schedule. Safe travels!

We’re flying Delta from Chicago to Cabo San Lucas, with a layover in Atlanta. Will we need to pick up checked bag during the layover or will it be transferred to the second plane? The layover is only 54 minutes, purchased on the same ticket. We are trying to decide if we should check a bag or stuff carry-ons in case of a missed flight situation.

Hi Jill,

For your flights to Cabo, you won’t need to do anything with your bags in Atlanta. That’s a short connection time but it should be fine if your first flight gets in on time. If you can reasonably get everything in your carry-on, that might be a good option. It will be much easier if you do end up missing your connecting flight. If you decide to check bags, just make sure you have what you’d need for your first day of vacation in your carry-on. Then you’ll be able to enjoy some pool or beach time even if your bags end up on a different flight. You WILL have to grab your bags and re-check them coming back into the U.S. but that’s usually a quick process. Have a great trip!

Flying Delta from Atlanta Airport to Aruba. I see that the Delta flights to/from Aruba depart and arrive from concourse E. We normally use the domestic terminal for domestic flights, but in this case, is it a requirement that we go through the International Terminal for security clearances and such?

Hi Curtis,

Yes, since you have an international flight, you will have to go through the international terminal.

Greetings
We are flying from Puerto Rico to Atlanta and arriving at 8:58 pm through the South Terminal. Then We have a connection Flight to ICT Wichita, Kansas departing at 9:41. Do You think that we have enough time to make the connection flight, remembering that we are not International because PR is a USA territory? Thanks.

Hi Juan,
That’s a pretty tight connection, but if your first flight is on time, you should be able to make it. Good luck!

What is the best option to go from Car Rental Return to the International Terminal? I’m flying Delta

Hi Felipe,

You can take the shuttle from car rental return to the international terminal.

Hello,

We are flying from Cleveland to Orlando with a 38 min layover in Atlanta on Delta on the same ticket. Do you think we have enough time to make the connection?

Thank you,
Noreen

Katie Seemann

July 11, 2022

Hi Noreen,

That’s definitely a tight connection, but it’s doable if your first flight is on time. I would check to see if Delta has any later flights from Atlanta to Orlando just in case you miss your connection. Also, try to just take carry-ons if you can, so your luggage doesn’t end up waiting for you in Orlando. Have a great trip!

Hi,
I will fly from Chicago to Madrid next week with an only ticket from Delta Airlines, with a 3h layout in Atlanta Airport (Chicago-Atlanta-Madrid), so I must go from S terminal to I terminal.
As I am not an US citizen (this is my return flight to Spain after vacation time) do you know if I would need to go in ATL airport through customs and passport control, security control… or if I could go from S terminal to I terminal directly from my first flight? I don’t need to check any luggage.
Thank you in advance!!

Hi Lucia,

Since your Chicago to Atlanta flight is domestic, you will not need to pass through customs as this is only for international flights arriving into the USA.

I am flying to Israel via Boston with Delta. I do not want to park at International Parking due to the prohibited cost (Peachy Parking). They do offer an early bird special of 99 dollars for domestic only. My question is can I use Peachy Parking’s domestic parking be driven to Delta’s domestic terminal? Check my bags at Delta’s domestic terminal through to Tel Avis via Boston (domestic). That would save a ton of money.

Coming back we are flying from Tel Avis to Charles De Gaulle to Atlanta. So, we will be landing at Atlanta’s International and receiving our bags at International. From International can we take a shuttle to Atlanta’s domestic area and then take Peachy Parking from Delta’s domestic terminal to our car which will be parked in PP’s domestic parking lot? Thank in advance

I’m flying from ATL to Cancun on Frontier Airlines. I will have one check-in bag. Do I check in my bag on the Frontier domestic counter and then go through security on the domestic side? After that do I go to the plane shuttle train which will take me to International F terminal?

Katie Seemann

January 09, 2023

Hi Joey,
Yes, you can check your bag at the main Frontier counter when you enter the airport. Then you’ll be able to access the international terminal after you go through security. Have a great trip.

I would suggest checking with the parking lot’s rules for the $99 domestic-only special to see if that would work. Have a great trip.

I just received a flight time change notice. I now have a 44 minute connection in ATL. Coming from Lafayette, LA with a connection in Atlanta for a flight to St Thomas USVI. Flying with Delta Airlines. Is that enough time? Seems pretty tight to me

Chris Hassan

March 20, 2023

Hey Casey,

That is definitely a tight connection, but it is doable if nothing goes wrong. Right now it looks like your arrival flight gets into Concourse C and the departing flight from Concourse D, so it could be worse. If your flights are all on 1 ticket, Delta should accommodate you if you miss your flight.

Becky

My husband and I are arriving at the Delta Domestic Terminal and departing for Nice, France on July 8th from Concourse F with a 1 hour 1 minute layover. I know that after we check our bags, we will go through security. We both have Global Entry Cards and we also have Sky Priority. Is Global Entry a different line then Sky Priority? Which will get us through security the fastest? Then we take the escalator to level 0 and get on the Plane Train to Concourse F (International Terminal). I read that international flights close 30 minutes before departure time. If that is true, we have 30 minutes to get to our flight. If that is true, then we have only 30 minutes to get to our flight. That doesn’t seem possible. Can we get a ride in an electric cart to make it faster? We are not immobile but I don’t think we can run fast enough!!

Hi Becky,

Global Entry only applies when going through customs upon returning to the U.S. That said, if you have Global Entry then you also have TSA PreCheck and that will get your through security the fastest. Since you are flying from another U.S. airport, you should not have to re-clear security when you arrive at ATL, so you will have plenty of time to make it to your gate.

May 01, 2023

Hello. Considering booking travel from CDG through ATL, with a domestic connection. These would be separate tickets, arriving internationally on Air France and departing for the domestic connector on Delta. We are US citizens with PreCheck and Clear but not Global Entry. Would this be any more complicated than if the Air France and Delta flights were on the same reservation? (They are partners, so I could book it as one ticket, but it’s more expensive.) Can you recommend a minimum layover time?

Chris Hassan

May 02, 2023

Hey Ben,

On separate tickets you will need to collect your bags and then go and check-in for the second flight. You should give yourself a minimum of 2-3 between flights to do this to be safe.

June 04, 2023

Hi, we are coming into ATL today on a domestic flight. We have a Global Entry interview in ATL, which is on the International Terminal. I assume we should get bags from baggage claim but are uncertain how to move between domestic baggage claim and the Global Entry Office on the international terminal. Will we be able to get back to the plane train without having to re enter TSA? Any advice would be appreciated.

Keri Stooksbury

June 04, 2023

Hi Susan! I’m unclear from your question if ATL is your final destination or if you are attempting to do the interview on a connection. If you do need to grab your bags for some reason, I have arrived at ATL domestic baggage before and there is a shuttle bus across the way from the exit that will take you to the international terminal. There was a 15-minute wait or so at the time. If you don’t need to grab bags, take the Plane Train to Concourse F and go to the GE office on the arrivals level. The GE office is outside of security, so if you are connecting onward you will have to re-clear security. If you are given your Known Traveler Number at the interview, you could always visit your airline’s check-in desk to have this applied to your onward ticket so that you could use the TSA PreCheck lines. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Thanks for reading!

We are new US immigrants with a connecting flight from Abu Dhabi to Amsterdam (Etihad), Amsterdam to Atlanta (Delta) and Atlanta to Tallahassee (Delta). It’s booked in just 1 ticket (all has same confirmation number). My questions are the ff:
– Do we have to get the luggages from each destination point and have them re-check in to the new connecting flight? Or will they be automatically transferred to the next/ final destination point (Tallahasse)?
– Where is the immigration office to drop our US Visa Packets? How far is this office from Terminal I (arrival point)?
– We are arriving at 12nn in Terminal I and will be departing at 3pm in Terminal S. Will the 3 hours layover time be enough to re-check the luggages (if we have to), pass the security check, move from Terminal I to Immigration Office (to drop the visa packets) to Terminal S (departure point to final destination)?

I’m hoping somebody can help me find the answers to my queries. Thanks in advance.

Keri Stooksbury

July 04, 2023

Hi Gianelli – You likely won’t need to recheck your luggage in Amsterdam (Abu Dhabi will advise on this), but you definitely will on your Atlanta connection. I am not sure about the immigration office for your visa packets – I’d suggest reaching out to the airport directly for advice on this. I think a 3-hr connection should be fine.

Hello, we are flying with Delta from Israel to Miami via ATL. Do we have collect our checked luggage and passport and customs control? If yes then where we have to drop it? I’m asking because Delta customer support told me that Delta will transfer checked luggage by themselves and we’ll see the bags only in Miami. Thanks!

Keri Stooksbury

July 01, 2023

Hi Stas – As an international arrival, after Immigration and before Customs in MIA you’ll claim your bag and check it forwards to ATL. Thanks for reading!

Stas

July 01, 2023

Hello Keri. Thank you for replying. Probably I was unclear in my question. We are flying with Delta from Israel to Miami with stopover in ATL. Whole booking is with Delta – flights DL249 (TLV-ATL) and DL1324 (ATL-MIA), so the baggage is checked with Delta for whole journey TLV-ATL-MIA. Do we have collect our checked luggage after Immigration in such case?

Keri Stooksbury

July 01, 2023

Apologies, Stas – I misread the question. I think virtually all U.S. airports require international arrivals to recheck their luggage in the same format: after passport control, recheck luggage, then proceed through Customs. Once you’ve done so, you can take the Plane Train from Concourse F to your next flight to MIA. You can also reach out to ATL directly (Facebook or Twitter) to confirm.
