I totally agree with this, almost. I will sometimes do premium economy (if the airline has it) due to the usual 2 seats together configuration. But, for the long haul – business class. One thing though, why would you fly first on aa’s 321 with a 1-1 config and not their business with the 2-2 config so you could be closer to the kids? If biz was sold out then I understand.

I agree with you 100%! The picture I think you are referring to is the BOS-JFK leg of a business class redemption from BOS-JFK-GIG. Since American only sells that leg as either economy or first class, our business class seats were “upgraded” to first class for the 40-minute flight. Since it was such a quick flight, we didn’t feel like it was worth trying to “downgrade” our seat. But otherwise, you are correct, having the business class seats next to each other is better for families. Thanks for the comment!

Extra leg space is always high priority for me!

Well written and you hit the points on the head. I really enjoyed reading it. Especially around the new layouts where access and vision to children are now limited by screens. With the newer 1-2-1 layouts, I find easier to reach my child across the aisle than across the divider. If I am located in the middle of a cabin, getting to my child requires me to walk around the entire cabin.
I fly business with my 3-year-old and 1.5-year old on longer journeys as it makes all our lives easier. I have not had any negative comments with their crying or fussing. I have however had this in economy, there are far more people to annoy in a smaller space, think density! Many of these business class flyers are parents themselves.
What I would like to know more about is picking seats as many airlines offer seat selection prior to flight. It is common that seats located close together are usually taken. Leaving us random seats located throughout the cabin. How would the airline ensure that a child sits close to a parent?
There should not be any judgment towards a family flying in the premium cabins because they value the benefits. You can’t please everyone, and we were all babies once.

Very well said! We have also had much better experiences as a family in business class compared to economy. The kids sleep better (which means less fussing), and there are fewer people nearby to be bothered.
Regarding sitting near each other, yes, that can lead to some anxiety! On our last 2 business class flights, all of our seats were scattered throughout the cabin. But in both situations, seats opened up the day-of and we were able to grab the seats we wanted…which was lucky.
When this happened in economy and we couldn’t find any other options, the staff at the gate was able to move some things around to accommodate us.
In the U.S. there is actually the Families Flying Together Act which is supposed to force airlines to sit families with children under 13 next to each other. Not sure how it is enforced though.
Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for the article here, some good info. I will be travelling next year with my wife and son (son will be about 18 months at time of flight) in business class on an AA 777-200 from ewr to fco via clt. This will be the first time my son will be on a plane and I wanted to have the extra room and comfort, and hopefully a few zzz’s.
My son will be traveling as baby on lap, and Im trying to get some insight on the best seats for us to have. I was thinking 1D and 1H (center isle, first row) or 7d and 7h (center isle, first row in 2nd section of business class. Both are bulkhead seats, but my main concern is getting up and taking a short stroll to pass our son back and forth as we need to. Maybe take a quick walk through the galley to get to each other instead of going up and down aisles. Any insight into this? thanks

Hey GT,
Business class on the 777 is a great plane with your little one, lots of space! Personally, I like the front row since the crew and galley are so close in case you need anything. Also, fewer passengers to bother if the little traveler gets cranky! Happy travels, enjoy!

Any thoughts in a 1-2-1 business class configuration it makes more sense to sit in the center 2 with 2 parents and a baby, which would logically make sense to be close together.
OR each parent gets a window (behind each other) so that the baby has access to it?

Hi Mark,
I think it depends on your preference. If you prefer to be close together for the duration of the flight, then I’d select the seats next to each other. If you each really prefer window views, then I’d select those. Safe travels!

What airline would you recommend when traveling with two toddlers. Flying from LAX to France considering first class or business class.

Hi Marcia,
Are you planning to fly non-stop from LAX to CDG? If so, the only non-stop option is with Air France.

What is the best option to fly with a 9 month old lap infant using miles for business class travel? My husband and I both want to go for business class seats but don’t know if we have to pay extra miles for the infant seat as well. Since he’s practically going to be in our laps the whole time, is it even worth it to get a business class seat for the kiddo?

Hi Lala!
Where do you want to fly to? Some airlines will charge a lot of money for an infant to fly as a lap child on an international flight, so choose your destination carefully! On domestic flights, lap children are free, so it may be worth sharing a seat with the little one.
Safe travels!

We are flying a United 789 business with the 1-2-1 seating with our 8-month-old as a lap infant. Do you think the bassinet is worth sitting across the aisle from each other? I’m leaning towards sitting in the middle so that we can pass back and forth easier.

Hi Jeremiah,
Either should be fine. I would go with whatever you are most comfortable with! Safe travels!

I don’t necessarily agree. I was on a business class flight and the baby in front of me kept crying and crying. Even though I’ve had a few cocktails, melatonin and my Bose noise-canceling headphones, I kept waking up because of the baby. My wife was upset as well. That’s not what I expect of a 3K ticket. And the headphone trick you mentioned didn’t do the job.
A new trip is now coming up and that’s why I was researching if there are any seats with extra spaces for babies, just to make sure I can sit far away.

We try to fly business class on long-hauls, but with a newborn I’m curious at what age do you think it makes sense to get the infant their own business class seat so everyone can comfortably enjoy the seating?
Even under 2, airlines can charge $$$ for international award fares and for this particular itinerary they’ll charge around $700 RT for our baby to a LAP BABY.
My guy says that even at 14 months, we may get our baby their own business class seats since this itinerary will be 15 hours each way.
Thoughts?

Hey Mark,
Yes, when the price for a lap child starts creeping up, it is certainly worth considering getting your little one their own seat. Obviously, it will be safer and more comfortable for everyone, so it will just depend on how much it will impact your budget. On a 15-hour flight, that could be money well spent. But don’t be surprised if you end up using only 2 of the 3 seats!
Safe travels,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Thanks for this. I would like to get you opinion, my 2 yr old will be flying first time and my husband and I have the opportunity to book business class using Qantas A300-300 which I think has 1-2-1 configuration. I am definitely sure that during take off and landing my toddler will have anxiety seating alone on his seat (i dont have a problem during cruising), can i have him on my lap during take off and landing?

Hi Angela,
How exciting! Technically, passengers 2 and older will need to stay in their own seat during take-off and landing. The crew may turn a blind eye, but I would be prepared for him to be sitting by himself. If the flight is empty, perhaps the crew would let you sit in economy during takeoff so that you could be closer to each other.
Safe travels,
Chris

I’m flying to London from Atlanta solo with our son in September. He will be 7 months old at the time. How did your wife create this footwell nook? Was she able to secure him or sleep herself at all? I’m trying to figure out how to nap myself for the overnight flight. (That’s probably a delusional goal) He used a bassinet on United Polaris when he was 3 months old but he will be too long for it when I go back. Thanks for the tips!

Hi Katherine,
The footwell nook doesn’t work with all seats, so you will need to adjust when you board, but no, she didn’t end up getting much rest to be honest. Napping side by side was usually the most successful option for us.
Good luck and safe travels!

My husband and infant will be accompanying me on a business trip internationally – and while my work flies business class my husband opted for an economy ticket. We had planned for the baby to sit with me in business but are just finding out about the 10% fees – OUCH! Do you know if airlines would allow the baby to spend any time with me in my seat if he’s technically attached to my husband’s ticket – and we’re not on the same reservation because mine was booked through work.
