When flying Norwegian Air, checked baggage is included for all fares excluding LowFare.

When you require additional baggage, the trick to saving primarily comes with booking your baggage online before reaching the airport, which you can do up to 6 hours before departure. You can also become a Norwegian Reward member and use points to pay for extra baggage.

Norwegian Air Carry-on Allowance

1 Personal Item: FREE for all fares (10 kg maximum)
1 Carry-on Item:

  • LowFare: No standard carry-on (available to purchase from $6 to $14)
  • LowFare+: 1 standard carry-on (10 kg combined with personal item)
  • Flex: 1 standard carry-on (15 kg combined with personal item)

Size Restrictions:

  • Personal: 15 x 11.8 x 7.9 inches (38 x 30 x 20 cm)
  • Carry-on: 21.6 x 15.7 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 cm)

Norwegian is very clear on its policy regarding in-cabin luggage weight restrictions. It reports that by making sure every passenger stays within their allowance, they can avoid delays from having to offload excess carry-on luggage that’s outside of the limits.

What happens if you’re over the limit? Norwegian reports you’ll need to check your carry-on into the aircraft hold at an extra fee: direct flights at $50 and connecting flights at $100.

Norwegian’s policy also states if you’ve already checked in 2 items of baggage, you’ll then be charged an excess baggage fee of $16 per kilo, per leg.

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy:

  • There is no carry-on baggage allowance for infants on Norwegian flights, but baby food and milk/formula required for the flight can be brought onboard.

Stroller Check Policy:

  • 1 stroller and 1 car seat are permitted to be checked, in addition to 11 pounds (5 kg) of checked baggage that can be packed separately or within the adult’s luggage.

Norwegian Air Checked Baggage Allowance

The bag should not exceed a max linear dimension of 118 inches (300 cm) L + W + H, but one side can measure up to 98.4 inches (250 cm), so you could have a long skinny bag.

  • LowFare: 0 bags included
  • Lowfare+: 1 bag included (50 pounds/23 kg)
  • Flex: 2 bags included (50 pounds/23 kg each)
  • Infant: 1 bag (11 pounds/5 kg)

Additional/Excess Baggage Fees

Additional Baggage

Purchased Online

  • Direct flights: first bag $11.90, second bag $29.90
  • International: first bag from $15.90 to $35.90, second bag from $29.90 to $39.90

The cost of prepaid additional baggage depends on the specific route. Please see Norwegian’s City Pair List and pricing table to calculate the fees for your journey.

Purchased at the Airport

  • Direct: $50
  • Connecting: $100

Excess Baggage

  • Overweight: Items over 50 pounds (23 kg) are $16 per kg, per leg not to exceed 70 pounds (32 kg) per bag or 163 pounds (74 kg) combined total
  • Oversized: Must not exceed 98 x 31 x 44 inches (250 x 79 x 112 cm) L x W x H

Excess baggage charges apply to any items over the 1- or 2-bag allowance (depending on your fare type) and to baggage that exceeds the weight limit of 50 pounds (23 kg). Passengers are permitted to check a maximum of 2 bags (included allowance or prepaid) and any additional baggage will be considered excess.

  • $35 (booked online) and $58 (booked at airport).

Each item must not exceed 70 pounds (32 kg) or be lighter than 4.5 pounds (2 kg) with a maximum size of 98 x 31 x 44 (250 x 79 x 112 cm) L x H x W and a maximum circumference of 118 inches (300 cm).

For specific guidance relating to sporting equipment and musical instruments as carry-on and checked luggage, see Norwegian’s policy.

Exclusions and Waivers

If you fly frequently with Norwegian Air, then joining its loyalty program Norwegian Reward can earn you CashPoints to spend on extra baggage fees, along with seat reservations and booking changes.

The more you fly, the more benefits you’ll be eligible for — including free baggage on all flights once you have reached 18 single flights (this includes stopovers).

Can I Prepay for Baggage?

How do I measure the cicumference of my luggage? Is it length x 2 plus height x 2 plus width x 4 ?

Catherine Luther

March 24, 2019

Hi Pauline,

When Norwegian references the maximum circumference of a piece of checked luggage they are referring to length + height + width. These measurements combined must not exceed 300cm. So if the length of your bag was 250cm, then the height and width could not exceed 50cm combined.

I hope this helps

If I book an air ticket not directly from the Norwegian Air (but from agents international flight) from JFK to Stockholm round trip, can I pay my check bag fee online to save money? If i cannot pay online, how much do i need to pay in the airport one way? Thanks.

Catherine Luther

April 04, 2019

Hi Wan,

To pre-pay for baggage online you would need to login to Norwegian’s website with a booking reference, so this would depend on whether the agent you booked with can give you the booking reference. The agent may be able to add baggage for you, or you could try calling Norwegian’s Call Centre on 1-800-357-4159. If you do have to add the baggage at the airport then this would be $93 one way for a direct flight or $185 for connecting international – international.

Can the flight I want to buy go return from Newark International Airport (EWK) NJ to Dublin, Ireland?
Also, how does one have a dog travel with them, at all time, on the return flight?
Are there non-stop flights from Newark International Airport (EWK) NJ to Dublin, Ireland?
Where can the lists of different prices for seats on a non stop flight be found?
Thanks.

Catherine Luther

April 12, 2019

Hi Mary,

Norwegian only fly direct to Dublin from New York Stewart International Airport. You can view prices on Norwegian’s website by conducting a flight search on their booking page. Pets can only travel in the hold for domestic flights in Norway (Svalbard excluded), Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Argentina and Spain, and in the cargo for flights to Svalbard, within Schengen and domestic flights within Argentina.

Hope this helps!

I paid for cancellation protection for a round trip ticket from Boston to Rome on Norwegian Air, What does that cover in terms of defining a cancellation?
Thank you.

Catherine Luther

April 17, 2019

Hi Nancy,

According to Air Norwegian’s policy: https://www.norwegian.com/uk/booking/booking-information/cancellation-protection/ a cancellation would be eligible in the following situations:

If a passenger on your booking falls ill. You would need to produce an original medical certificate to request a refund.
An acute illness or death of an immediate family member. Norwegian defines “immediate family” as a spouse/registered partner, co-habiting partner, children, parents, parents-in-law, siblings and grandparent. An original medical certificate and family relationship documentation would need to be supplied to request a refund.
A serious complication in a pregnancy up to 4 weeks before the due date.

Norwegian does not refund any supplementary purchases made with any of their partners such as hotels or car rental. To cancel, you need to phone their Call Centre. Passengers who sent an email to inform Norwegian have reported that they have had their refund request rejected as a result.

April 24, 2019

Hi,
I have a question concerning Carry-on: 55 x 40 x 23 cm.
Is this a measure of the suit-case with or without handle? Because I wanted to buy a 55x40x23cm suit-case, but a problem is that suit-case has a handle that adds +5cm (and little wheels on suitcase). So – is that kind of luggage still allowed on a plane or not?
Thank you for answering.

Tina

April 24, 2019

Hi Tina, the general rule for airlines across the board is that the measurements must include all wheels and handles.

Zoe K Van Oss

May 28, 2019

I have a roller bag that is 22″L (this includes the rollers) x 14’6″W x 10″D
I have a low fare ticket that states the size max to be 55cm x 40cm x 23cm
There was a website that stated the combined to be 300cm
If one does not measure from rollers; I am fine.
The weight is under the 10kg
Do you think I still could have a problem?
I am at 46’6 inches combined space (which includes rollers).
Thanks, Zoe

Erin Miller

May 29, 2019

Hi Zoe, are you talking about your carry-on bag or your checked bag? The max for carry-on (cabin bag) is 55x40x23 cm which is measured including all handles and wheels. You’ll also want to remember that this 10kg limit is your personal item (purse, briefcase, small backpack) AND your roller bag combined.

The 250x79x112 cm (L x H x W) with max circumference of 300 cm you’re seeing is referring to the dimensions of a checked bag (one that goes in the hold).

Hope this helps!

With Lowe fare+, can i pay fore an extra carry on?

Catherine Luther

June 03, 2019

Hi Natasha,

As Lowfare+ already includes a standard carry-on bag and a personal item, it is not possible to purchase additional carry-on. You can purchase checked baggage only.

Does Norwegian offer military discounts?

Catherine Luther

June 15, 2019

Hi,

There is not mention of military discount on Norwegian’s website so it is unlikely that they offer this.

What are their rules regarding where to pack items such as batteries, power banks, etc? Hand luggage or checked luggage?

Jarrod West

June 30, 2019

Hey Nomi,

Batteries, spare/loose, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for portable electronic devices must be carried in carry-on baggage only.

Hi, I prepaid for checked luggage online when I booked my flight. I can get a refund if I no longer need to check in a bag?

Catherine Luther

July 19, 2019

Hi,

According to this FAQ on Norwegian’s website, optional service charges such as seat selection or baggage are non-refundable.

Hi, I got a low fare flight to Spain with a transfer in London, if I want 1 checked bag, how much is the cost?

Catherine Luther

August 09, 2019

Hi Melba, where are you flying from?

Arielle

August 19, 2019

I have paid for 2 bags but have 2 additional bags that I will be travelling with. How do I check them and would I need to add them as excess baggage? And will I have to pay the kilo per bag?

Catherine Luther

August 21, 2019

Hi Arielle,

As Norwegian only permits passengers to pre-pay for up to 2 checked bags, the other two will be considered excess luggage and will be charged at the airport on check-in. Excess luggage is charged at around $13 per kilogram.

Pat Swasaki

August 20, 2019

I booked two Norwegian tickets ORD-BAR the other day through Flyfar. I was given the option of paying $10 per ticket for an extra piece of hand luggage. Since our backpacks are larger than the allowed “personal item” size, I thought it prudent to pay $10 each to cover them as carryons. However, my Norwegian documents don’t reflect the extra carry-ons. I checked w/Flyfar and they tell me the request will be confirmed by Norwegian 3-4 days before flying. I tried to call Norwegian but could not get through. Does this situation sound legit?

Catherine Luther

August 21, 2019

Although it may be plausible that it takes some time for booking details to be updated between an online travel agent and an airline, we can’t comment on whether this is legitimate or not. You would need to try to get in touch with Norwegian again who will be able to confirm this for you.

I have a direct flight Orlando to Paris – low fare – which includes the carry-on and small personal item – free but needs combined weight 10 kg. Can I purchase an upgrade on the weight allowance prior to the trip?

Jarrod West

August 26, 2019

Hi Tina,

Yes, you can pay to bring additional baggage on the flight. Thanks for reading!

Maddie Brown

October 02, 2019

I purchased a round trip ticket from Orlando to London, but I now need to change the return flight to an earlier date. It is a LowFare ticket so I know there is a fee to reschedule the flight. But I purchased a checked bag with my flight. If I reschedule, will the checked bag purchase continue over to my new flight?

Jarrod West

October 08, 2019

Hi Maddie,

You may receive a refund for the checked bag on the flight you’re canceling, and then could be required to re-purchase the bag for your new flight. I recommend you contact the Norwegian Air customer service team directly to be certain.

We are flying Orlando to Gatwick in November. Could you please inform me what is the maximum weight allowed for premium class? One case weighing 23 kg and another case weighing 15kg, is that allowed? Or do they have to be 20 kg each case and no more?

Jarrod West

October 18, 2019

Hi Christine,

Be advised that we do not represent Norwegian Airlines, but you should be able to bring 1 personal item and 1 carry-on bag with a combined weight of no more than 15 kgs. You should also be able to bring 2 checked bags weighing up to 20 kgs each, 40 kgs total.

What is the weight for checked in baggage?
20kg or 23kg?

Hi BolaDeBayo,

The weight allowance is 23 kg, Norwegian updated its policy earlier this year from 20 kg.

Ralph Jacquez

I bought a flight through kiwi from Amsterdam to Los Angelas. It has a layover in Barcelona. So the first flight was on Level Airlines. When I booked my flight i paid $70 for 1 check in bag. It didn’t have a carry on option. My first flight on level I was allowed to take my carry on and a backpack. When I got to Barcelona I had to check out than check back in. The second flight was Norwegian airlines. When I went to the front desk to get my ticket they wanted to charge me 90 Euros for my small carry on. I didn’t understand why on a international flight that’s not included. They also said I’m not allowed to take my carry-on on the plane that I have to check it in. They ended up charging me 50 Euro and I had to check in my carry on. Now I am currently in line to board my flight and I see everyone with a carry-on like mine. Why did they make me check mine in?

Catherine Luther

March 10, 2020

Hi Ralph,

As we’re not Norwegian Airlines, we can’t comment 100% on why you were asked to check your carry-on, but it is likely you booked Norwegian’s LowFare that does not include any carry-on allowance (just a personal item). To check your fare type or to follow-up on this you will need to speak to Kiwi who booked your flights.

Hi Saleh,

If you log in to your account and go to “manage booking” you should be able to add and pay for any baggage you need. Safe travels!
