Korean Air Checked Baggage Allowance

Free baggage allowances regarding size, weight, and quantity of baggage vary with passenger itineraries, seating classes, and SKYPASS membership grades.

Korean Air advises passengers to use its baggage calculator for information on fees. We ran a few searches and found the following fees, but do check the calculator for your specific flight.

Can I Prepay for Baggage?

Korean Air does allow passengers the ability to prepay for luggage online from 48 hours before departure.*

Passengers need to log in to their booking from the Check-in area of the Korean Air website to do this.

* Flights to/from the U.S., Canada, U.K., or Paris can check-in and prepay baggage from 24 hours prior to departure.

Credit Cards That Reimburse You for Checked Bag Fees

When flying Korean Air to/from the U.S. you receive 2 free checked bags, but if you need a third checked bag the price jumps to $200. Use one of the cards below to get reimbursed for some or all of your checked bag fees when flying Korean Air. Each card allows you to redeem Capital One miles for 1 cent each as a statement credit for previous travel purchases (within 90 days).

I will be traveling to Fiji from Delhi via Korean Air… can my personal item plus my hand carry sum up to 12kg? How much will it cost if I add a piece of extra luggage of 10kg as a checked in baggage in fj$?

Erin Miller

April 30, 2019

Hi Momina, we’re not sure which fare type you purchased so it’s tough to accurately help you out with this question.

That being said, if you’re flying Economy, Korean Air states: “One additional personal carry-on item — laptop, briefcase, handbag — is permitted for Economy Class. (Total weight of carry-on bag and additional allowance should not exceed 12kg.)”

Again, if you’re flying Economy, you should be allowed one checked bag free of charge (up to 23kg). An additional checked bag should cost you $130USD (~280 fj$).

Please be advised we are not Korean Air so this is our best answer for your question based on our interpretation of the information given from Korean Air’s website. For the most accurate answer, we suggest you call Korean Air’s customer service or reservations line and inquire with them directly.

Hi, I am traveling from America to Vietnam in Economy. How many bags am I allowed for free? Is it the same from Vietnam back to America?

Jarrod West

October 05, 2019

Hi Tawnya,

For your flight, you may bring 1 personal item, 1 carry-on bag, and 2 checked bags up to 50 lbs or 23 kgs. Yes, it is the same for both legs of your journey.

Thanks for reading!

Can I share the weight loading with my family members on my trip? For example, my baggage weight is 30kg and my family member’s baggage weight is 15kg – the total weight is less than 46kg. Is any extra charge required?

Erin Miller

May 26, 2019

Hi Kelly, the allotted baggage allowance is applied per ticketed passenger and the max limits are per bag. I am not sure which fare type you have purchased but if you have purchased two economy tickets, that would allow for 23kg per bag only. If you have any bag that is over 23kg you will have to pay an excess baggage charge or place some of the weight from the 30kg bag into the 15kg bag to even things out and make sure both are 23kg or under.

With almost all airlines, you generally cannot combine 23kg + 23kg for a total of 46kg between you.

Arlene Mante

May 31, 2019

Hello! The baggage policy states 2 luggages at 23kg each. Is it ok to just have one but would weigh more than 23kg? It just the large luggage bag.

Catherine Luther

June 03, 2019

Hi Arlene,

Please be aware that we are not Korean Air, we are UpgradedPoints.com. Although we cannot specifically confirm what Korean Air’s policy would be regarding this query, we can offer our experience that an airline would usually enforce the weight allowance of a single piece, regardless of whether you have decided to make use of your two piece allowance or not.

Janelle

June 03, 2019

Hello,

I noticed that the linear dimensions limitations states that each checked bag cannot exceed 62 inches or 158 cm. When looking for luggage to purchase, how would we calculate a luggage that has linear measurements such as:
30″x19″x11 to make sure it does not exceed the baggage linear dimensions of Korean Airlines’ guidelines? I will be leaving from the U.S. to China in 2 weeks with the Peace Corps, and I really don’t have the money to pay an extra $200 due to exceeding the limit. Also, is there a max linear measurement that both pieces of luggage cannot exceed together, or are the linear measurements limitations for each individual luggage? Thank you so much for your reply in advance!

Catherine Luther

June 04, 2019

Hi Janelle,

To calculate the linear dimensions, you would measure the length, width, and height of the bag and add these measurements together (L + W + H). The total must not exceed 62 inches (158 cm). This would apply to a single piece of luggage, Korean Air would not permit passengers to pool their size allowance across multiple pieces.

Hope this helps!

June 24, 2019

We will be traveling from Seoul to Bangkok economy class. How many checked bags are free per passenger? Weight per bag? How many carry on bags per passenger? Sizes allowed?
Thank you

Catherine Luther

June 25, 2019

Hi Heather,

For checked luggage the first 23 kg bag is free, the 2nd would cost $70, and any additional bags would be $100.

For carry-on luggage you are permitted 1 personal item and 1 carry-on bag with the total weight of personal + standard bags not exceeding 12kg / 25lb for Economy.
A carry-on item must not exceed 40 X 20 X 55 cm or a total sum of 115cm per piece.

Hi Korean Air

We are a family of 4 in economy class and have a 4 baggage (23kg) check in allowance. Can we check in 3 bags that exceed 23kg but less than 32kg and have a total weight less than 92kg (23×4)?

Stephen Au

July 17, 2019

Robert, keep in mind we are NOT Korean Air. Checking in fewer but oversized luggage is probably not going to fly with them. Check back directly with Korean Air, since we are not the airline. Thanks for reading.

I’m a passenger of Korean Air and I’ll be leaving for the US. Can I have one additional baggage weighing 23 kg and can I use my mileage to pay the fee? Thank you.

Jarrod West

April 09, 2022

Hi Ophelia,

You should already receive 2 complimentary checked bags for flights to the US. If you would like to bring a 3rd checked bag then the price should be $200, but unfortunately, you are not able to pay the fee with miles. Safe travels!

Abhijeet patne

July 20, 2019

I will be travelling from Mumbai (India) to Los Angeles lax USA with a layover in Seoul Incheon…how many carry on and checked in luggage am I allowed? I presume I am allowed 1 backpack with a duffle and two checked in luggage weighing no more than 23 kg…. am I going to be charged for this? Or will I be charged at Seoul even though the airline is same that is Korean Air (Delta).

Catherine Luther

July 21, 2019

Hi Abhijeet,

Economy passengers traveling to/from the United States are permitted 2 x 23 kg of checked luggage. Providing you booked the entire journey on 1 ticket, this allowance should apply for any other airlines operating part of the journey as your luggage would be checked all the way through to Los Angeles.

The carry-on allowance is 1 x carry on item not exceeding 40cm x 20cm x 55cm and 1 x personal item such as a laptop bag or handbag with the total combined weight not exceeding 12kg.

Abhijeet patne

July 22, 2019

Thank you Catherine for your quick reply…it doesn’t matter if my beginning destination is from india right for the checked in luggage? And I would get my checked luggage directly at my final destination ( Los Angeles). Both my flights are from Korean Air with a layover of 5 hours in Incheon. Any suggestions of any do and donts?

Catherine Luther

July 22, 2019

Korean Air doesn’t specify any exclusions for flights originating from India so the the standard baggage allowance would apply. As we’re not Korean Air we can’t guarantee this as we are sourcing information from their website, so if you would like to be 100% certain we advise you contact Korean Air directly. Please refer to Korean Air’s website for items that are restricted in checked and carry-on luggage.

December 19, 2019

Hi! Me and my brother have a flight this coming monday can we have a group baggage? Since his luggage is very small? The kg. of my luggage will be 28 and his luggage will be 18 kg. In our tickets we have economy and each person can carry maximum of 23kg. Please reply into my comment or send me some email thanks! Have a nice day. Our total 46 kg.

Catherine Luther

December 20, 2019

Hi Erickson,

You wouldn’t be able to share the weight as an individual piece may not exceed 23 kg. If a piece does exceed 23 kg then it is likely you would incur overweight charges.

I’m traveling from India to Toronto. What is the max weight for my carry-on bag?

Andrew Kunesh

August 01, 2019

Hi Swar, good question! According to Korean Airlines, your carry-on bag can weigh up to 12 kg/25 lbs in economy class. Passengers in first and business class are allowed two carry-on bags that weigh up to 18 kg/40 lbs.

Nick Mankle

Andrew Kunesh

August 19, 2019

Hey Nick, your baggage allowance will be the same on both the Delta and Korean flight legs. Further, bags will be checked all the way through from Delta to Korean, so you won’t need to recheck your bags at Seoul airport. Thanks!

I will be traveling from Cebu, Philippines to Honolulu, Hawaii, USA with a 15 hour layover in Seoul, Incheon, Korea. I will be checking into the transit hotel in Incheon for a 14 hour layover. Is it possible to check my bag from Cebu, Philippines all the way through to my final destination Honolulu, Hawaii, USA or do I have to pick it up in Seoul and re-check again to USA? Is there an hour limitation as to how long Korean Airlines can hold bags for transfer to next flight internationally? I would prefer to check my bag all the way to Honolulu, Hawaii, USA and not have to pick up in Seoul. Thank you.

Catherine Luther

August 24, 2019

Hi Diane,

As you’re staying in the transit hotel, you won’t be required to clear customs and immigration so it is likely Korean Air will check your bags through to final destination. However, as we’re not Korean Air, we can’t confirm this for you 100%, so you would be best to call the airline to confirm this. Different airlines and airports have different policies when it comes to checking bags through.

Catherine Luther

August 28, 2019

Catherine Luther

September 02, 2019

Hi Dan,

Yes, you should be able to add a bag when checking in at the airport. Some airlines don’t accept cash so you may need a credit card to do this. Rules vary for different airlines and airports so it advisable that you contact Korean Air to query this.

June 23, 2020

Hi Catherine,
I am flying from Manchester to Cambodia (Phnom Penh). Flight route as per below:
– Manchester to London (British Airways) : 1 piece (23kg) check-in
– London to Seoul and Seoul to Phnom Penh: 1 piece (23kg) check-in

British Airways and Korean airline are not under the same alliances. So I wonder if I want to purchase additional baggage do I need to purchase separately or just through Korean airline? Please note that my ticket is issued under one booking reference. My luggage will be auto transferred at London and Seoul.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Jarrod West

June 24, 2020

Hi Lyly,

Was your entire booking made through the Korean Airlines website? Or did you use a 3rd party website like Expedia or Orbitz? If your entire booking was made through the Korean Airlines website then you should not need to purchase extra baggage separately. If it was made through a 3rd party website then you likely will need to purchase the baggage separately.

For this route, you should need to pay $70 to bring an extra checked bag. Korean Air does not appear to have any published information regarding traveling with eggs. I recommend you contact their customer service team directly for assistance with this.

Thanks for reading!

I am flying from Phnom Penh to Seoul in Korean Air economy class. What is the checked baggage allowance?

Hi Ranjith,

For this route, you should be able to bring 1 checked bag that weighs up to 50 pounds (23 kgs).

I am flying from America to Thailand, with Korean Airlines.
My question is I can bring 2 suitcases ***(weight 50 pounds per each/ ***23 Kgs per each),
and 1 carry – on baggage is 12 Kgs.
Is that correct?

Yes, that should be correct.

I am flying from NYC (JFK) to Manila (MNL) via Korean Airlines.
I’ve got enough Korean Air Miles (Including Morning Calm membership) to add an extra check-in baggage but due to my ticket class, I am unable to do so via the website redemption process.
I called Korean Air and told me I should be able to pay the extra baggage fee in the airport terminal during check-in using my Korean Air Miles.
Has anyone had experience with this or any advice?
I do not want to pay the $200 fee and would like to have some use with the miles I have with the airline.

We are a group of people flying from Korea to the Philippines in economy class. Will it be possible to weigh the luggage as a group? If not can I pay over the counter for my excess luggage?

Hi Christian,

They will weigh the bags one by one, not as a group. If any of them are overweight you will be able to pay over the counter at the airport.

Hello,

I am moving my family of 4 from the US to Laos and will likely fly Korean Air economy class for the first leg of the trip. We are beginning to pack and I was wondering if know the bag restrictions (maximum number of bags and maximum weights) per ticket? Your help is really appreciated!

Hi Hunter,

Korean Air does not appear to list a maximum amount of baggage allowed on its website, so I suggest you contact their customer service team directly at 1-(800)-438-5000. Safe travels!

I am flying from Amsterdam to Manila via Korean Air in economy. My check-in luggage is small. It only weighs 17 kg. Can I still check in another bag that only weighs 6 kg so I can have the total of 23 kg that’s allowed for my check in?

Hi Yo,

Unfortunately not, as Korean Air only allows 1 free checked bag. So if you bring a second bag you’ll be charged a fee for doing so, even if their combined weight is 23 kg.

I’m leaving for the US with 1 extra bag. How much I will pay and can I use my Skypass to pay the fees?

Hi Ophelia,

The charge for a 3rd bag should be $200, but unfortunately, you cannot use miles to pay for it.

My daughter will be traveling from the US to Seoul. She will have a pet carrier, a carry on, and 2 checked bags. Can she travel on Korean Air as Economy or Premium Economy (this how the choice online for reservations is listed) with no extra luggage fees?

Hi Tina,
She will need to pay an additional fee for the pet carrier. You can find more information here: https://www.koreanair.com/us/en/airport/assistance/travel-with-pet/checklist
