ITA Airways’ basic baggage policy follows a general trend: free carry-ons plus traditional inclusions for checked bags (1 for economy, 2 for Comfort Economy, premium economy, or business).

For ITA Airways, added fees get more complicated when it comes to extra pieces and overweight/oversized baggage. As you can see in our tables below, this excess pricing is highly “route dependent.”

ITA Airways Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
1 standard carry-on: FREE

Size Restrictions

  • Personal: 17.7 x 14.2 x 7.9 inches (45 x 36 x 20 cm), such as a briefcase, handbag, or laptop bag
  • Standard: 21.6 x 13.8 x 9.8 inches (55 x 35 x 25 cm) up to 17.6 pounds (8 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • Each infant is entitled to an additional bag of up to 22 pounds (10 kg) if the accompanying adult has booked a standard fare. If the adult has booked a Light fare, then no cabin allowance is permitted for the infant.

Stroller Check Policy

  • Strollers will be sent to the destination free of charge, however, ITA Airways is unclear on whether the stroller must be checked with the other bags or if it can be checked at the gate.

ITA Airways Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) for economy, premium economy, and Comfort Economy fares; 70 pounds (32 kg) for business, and max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

Light: For purchase, €50 to €70 per segment
Economy: First bag included* (50 pounds/23 kg)
Premium Economy: 2 bags included (50 pounds/23 kg)
Comfort Economy (Rome-Milan): 2 bags included (50 pounds/23 kg)
Business: 2 bags included (70 pounds/32 kg)

* 2 x 50-pound (23 kg) bags are permitted on flights:

  • From/To Tokyo
  • From the Middle East (excluding Israel) to the U.S. and vice-versa

I have booked a flight from Venice to Rome (2 one-way tickets) with Itinerary #——— (number hidden to protect privacy) in the amount of US$62.20 per adult. Does it include 1 check-in luggage for each traveller? If not, could I add one checked-in luggage for each and how much will it cost?

Hi Jocelyn, please be advised we are not Alitalia. We are Upgraded Points, a points and miles website dedicated to producing content of that nature as well as other travel related pieces such as this baggage fee article.

Whether or not your tickets include baggage are dependent on the fare type you purchased (light, economy, premium economy, etc) and should be noted somewhere in your confirmation receipt. If you are still unsure, we suggest contacting Alitalia directly at 1 (800) 223-5730.

Hope this helps…

I am a bit confused with your checked baggage allowance. In one section for economy travelers, from and to the US, I conclude that you are allowed two pieces of checked luggage without fees. But in another section, I am seeing one piece is allowed to be checked for free. Please let me know which is correct.

Hi Shelia, it looks like some information here has been confused (on our end). We’re taking a look and will update ASAP – thanks for the heads up!

Hi. I bought an Alitalia ticket from Athens to Rome (one way) in Economy/Y class and added 1 First Extra Piece Light Fare / C for USD 28. I assume the First Extra Piece Light Fare/C means 1 checked in luggage. The question is for how many kilos? Greatly appreciate all the help many thanks beforehand.

December 12, 2019

Hi Saut,

Your luggage allowance should be 23 kgs.

Thanks for reading!

I am travelling from Geneva to Rome, then Rome to Athens. The main body of carry-on bag is within the sizes specified i.e. 55cm high. However the bag has fixed wheels that make the overall height a few centimetres longer. Is this acceptable? I bought the bag as it was advertised as 55cm high.

May 13, 2019

Hi Chris,

As we’re not Alitalia, we can’t confirm whether your bag will be accepted unfortunately. However, going by the information they provide on their website, they do state:
“The hand baggage you bring on board with you may weigh no more than 8 kg and measure no more than 55 cm in height, 35 cm in width and 25 cm in depth including handles, side pockets and wheels
So if you do choose to take this carry-on then you would need to be prepared to check the bag if required.

Hi Arulanandan,
You can book excess baggage by logging in to your booking on Alitalia’s website or mobile app and visiting the ‘My Flights’ section.

Hi… we are two people traveling from Paris to New Delhi in Economy, but we have one pnr. How many checked-in bags and hand bags are allowed?
We are not able to figure this out on the ticket… pls help.

Erin Miller

May 26, 2019

Hi Madhu – first, please be advised we are not Alitalia, but we will attempt to answer your question as best we can.

Second, baggage allowance is allotted on a per ticketed passenger basis. This means, even if you booked for 7 people on one reference (pnr) number, each ticketed passenger would still have their own baggage allowance.

Since you have purchased two economy class tickets, each of you should be allowed the following free of charge:
– one carry-on item (55cm x 35cm x 25cm up to 8kg)
– one “personal item” (usually a purse, briefcase, or small backpack) able to be carried in the cabin as well

Your free checked baggage allotment depends on whether you purchased a basic economy or premium economy ticket, and applies to each passenger:
– basic economy: 1 bag (23kg, 158cm max linear dimensions)
– premium economy: 2 bags included (23kg, 158cm max linear dimensions)

Hope this helps!

For a personal item on Alitalia, this page says the size limit is “undisclosed.”

However, their web site says the current limit is 36 cm x 45 cm x 20 cm.

July 15, 2019

Hi Malden,

At the time of writing, the information would have been undisclosed. Thanks for highlighting its availability now.

Hello, I am going to have a flight from Toronto to St.Petersburg with step point in Rome. Can I divide my checked baggage, can I have 2 pieces of checked baggages, which constitute 23kg. For example: 17 kg + 6kg?

Catherine Luther

August 22, 2019

Hi Semyon,

Alitalia uses a piece rather than weight concept so you are only permitted to bring 1 x 23kg bag. The weight cannot be distributed between multiple pieces. As we’re not Alitalia we cannot confirm this for you 100% and advise you call them to confirm, but this is the usual rule for piece concept airlines.

Hi, I will travel to Egypt with economy class ticket and I want to purchase another luggage. This will be the second one beside the allowed one. How much it will cost?
Many thanks

Catherine Luther

August 29, 2019

Hi Amy,

Where are you flying from?

Amy

August 29, 2019

I will fly from London

Catherine Luther

August 30, 2019

Hi Amy,

I would think that Alitalia would include Egypt as North Africa, but as we’re not Alitalia we can’t confirm this 100%. As they don’t classify their region destinations on their website, it is best you give them a call to confirm this. If they class it as North Africa then the cost of a 2nd bag would be 60Eur / 75Usd / 95cad and if it is included within ‘rest of world’ then an extra bag would cost 100Eur / 125Usd / 160cad.

I am a student flying from New Delhi to Rome to Venice, may I please know the baggage allowance?
I read on your website that you provide 23kg *2 + 23kg for a person on student visa, ie, me.

Catherine Luther

September 14, 2019

Hi Vivek,

Please be aware that we are not Alitalia – we are UpgradedPoints.com. I haven’t found any any information regarding student baggage allowance on Alitalia’s website so we advise you contact the airline directly to query this.

Dipu

Hi, we have confirmed economy class ticket from Florence to Dhaka with the following connecting flights:

Florence to Rome by Alitalia
Rome to Kuwait by Kuwait Airways
Kuwait to Dhaka by Kuwait airways

The whole travel is under one PNR. In this case, are we allowed 2 checked in luggages for each traveler having 23Kg of each luggage for Alitalia? I saw Kuwait Airways is allowed 2 checked in luggage for each traveler.

Look forward to have your kind suggestion.
Thanks
Dipu

Catherine Luther

December 20, 2019

Hi Dipu,

Alitalia states “For code share flights, the baggage policy of the Partner Carrier operating the flight applies throughout the travel itinerary if entirely operated by the Partner.

As your flight is not entirely operated by Kuwait Airlines, you’ll need to check your allowance with the airline you booked with (this is assuming you booked with Alitalia). If you booked with Kuwait Airlines, then their baggage allowance would apply being the most significant carrier.

Dipu

December 21, 2019

Hi Catherine,
Many thanks for your advice. My ticket provided by my agent shows two luggage for each traveler throughout the journey. You are right to check with Alitalia. I’m gonna do that. Many thanks again.
