Hawaiian Airlines has a fairly standard baggage policy with fees that are pretty average for checked bags ($25 to $30) when compared to other major airlines. However, Hawaiian’s overweight fees seem to come in a bit cheaper than the average.

Fun Fact: Hawaiian Airlines has a great little exclusion for bringing fresh papaya and pineapple back home with you. Must be that “Aloha Spirit” …

Hawaiian Airlines Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
1 standard carry-on bag: FREE

Size and Weight Restrictions

  • Personal: Size and weight undisclosed, but Hawaiian states that the item must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you
  • Standard: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (55.9 x 35.5 x 22.9 cm) and 25 pounds (11.34 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • The infant does not receive a carry-on allowance
  • Passengers are permitted to bring a car seat onboard and use it on the plane if there is a free seat (subject to the travel safety seat policy)
  • Strollers will be checked at the gate free of charge; small, collapsible strollers may be carried on provided the item meets all of the standard size/weight restrictions of a carry-on bag

Hawaiian Airlines Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) and max linear dimensions of 62 inches (157 cm).

Is the Hawaiian Airlines mileage program going to stop on 28th of this month (August 2019)?

Hi James, we haven’t heard anything that would suggest this. Thanks!

Weighing less than 50 Lbs, may I check in my tool box?

Catherine Luther

September 06, 2019

Hi Gary,

A tool box is not featured on Hawaiian Air’s list of restricted items. However, as we’re not Hawaiian Air we cannot confirm this for you so you would need to contact the airline to check.

It appears that Hawaiian increased their bag fees for flights to/from North America about a year ago. Flights booked on or after Nov 13, 2018 are now $30 first bag and $40 second back for flights to/from North America, according to Hawaiian’s website.

I’m traveling to Maui on Hawaiian airlines this week, I’m traveling with my wedding dress, curious if bringing my dress in a standard garment bag would be acceptable as a carry on item to go in the overhead or if hanging in a closet is an option?

Thank you!

Jarrod West

September 30, 2019

Hi Jessica,

It should be accepted as your carry-on, although a space to hang it is probably unlikely depending on the plane. I suggest you contact Hawaiian Airlines directly to see if there are any accommodations they can arrange for your dress.

Thanks for reading!

I’m flying Hawaiian from Australia and have 4 inter-island flights (plus the 2 internationals) – I’ve assumed (and travel agent thought so too) that I do not need to pay for luggage on the inter-island flights due to it being a total multi-stop international flight booking? Is that correct or will I be needing to buy baggage for each flight?

Jarrod West

October 10, 2019

Hi Zoe,

Usually, Hawaiian Airlines does charge for baggage on flight between islands. However, since your trip is apart of a larger itinerary, I recommend you contact the Hawaiian Airlines customer support team directly and they should be able to give you an exact answer.

Thanks for reading!

I am flying Hawaiian from Los Angeles to Maui in first class. What is the total allowed weight? I get 2 free bags, but the weight is not mentioned. I am guessing it might be 70 lbs? True or false?

Stephen Au

October 28, 2019

Hi Joan,

As stated in the article, each free checked bag must be a maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lb) and max linear dimensions of 157 cm (62”).

Thanks for reading.

Catherine Luther

November 17, 2019

Hi Rommel,

Hawaiian Airlines states:

“Active duty US military personnel will only be allowed two (2) complimentary checked bags per person for coach/ first/business classes of service when on personal travel. A valid active duty Military ID is required at time of check-in.

Baggage allowance for military personnel on personal travel is limited to maximum of 50 lbs. and 62 linear inches without charge.

Military bag fee waiver will not apply to US military dependents on personal travel.”

Does Hawaiian allow for heavier baggage if flying first class? Other airlines have allowed up to 70 lbs.

Jarrod West

December 19, 2020

Hi Steven,

Hawaiian just allows up to 50lbs bags for their first class passengers.

James Myers

April 20, 2022

Well, that may be so but there is no charge for Business Class for luggage 51-70 lbs according to the Hawaiian Airlines chart. Ergo, flying Business Class you MAY check in a bag(s) over 50 lbs but less than 71 lbs without incurred charges.

Is there a baggage fee for car seats, for toddlers (older than 2 years old) that are loaded on the back of the plane?

Jarrod West

April 14, 2021

Hi Tal,

If your child is older than 2 years old then yes you would pay a carry-on bag fee in order to bring a car seat.

Can I pay an overwieght fee on my surfboard bag going from San Diego to Maui?

Hi Scott,

If you call the Hawaiian Airlines customer service team at 1-(800)-367-5320 they can assist you with that.

I booked a flight from LGB to Kona using Miles from my world elite HA mastercard. Do I still receive my one free bag with the credit card?

Jarrod West

June 14, 2021

Hi Dana,

You are required to pay with your Hawaiian Airlines World Elite card in order to receive the free checked bag, so using your miles would not qualify.

Gloria Antonio

Just to understand the baggage policy, each checked-in passenger is entitled to one carry-on and 1 checked bag. I’m traveling with my husband so he’s entitled to one carry-on and 1 checked-in bag also? Thank you.

Katie Seemann

November 29, 2021

Hi Gloria,
Each passenger is entitled to one personal item and one standard carry-on bag, so both you and your husband would each be able to bring these. There are fees for checking bags.

Phyllis Dewey

I am traveling with a medical device (C-Pap machine) does that count as my one personal item?

Jarrod West

October 13, 2022

Hi Phyllis,

No, a CPAP machine should not count as your personal item.
