Cathay Pacific has a generous baggage allowance policy across the board. You’ll notice even carry-on bags get a higher weight consideration with each bump up in cabin class.

A perk pertaining to overweight baggage is that you’re paying in excess per kilo on most routes outside the Americas — meaning if you’re only a little bit over, you aren’t charged 1 single hefty fee.

Hi There,
I would like to know how much it will cost to fly economy from South Africa to New Zealand regarding additional baggage charges per piece?

Regards
Delmaine

Erin Miller

March 26, 2019

Hi Delmaine, please be advised we are not Cathay Pacific so we cannot 100% confirm the validity of this charge but we can give you our best, educated guess based on the information Cathay provides in the baggage section of their website.

Flying from South Africa to New Zealand in Economy should give you a free baggage allowance of 2 bags up to 30kg total (combined, not 30kg each).

Additional notes are: Each piece cannot exceed max linear dimensions of 158cm (62in) the weight of each bag does cannot exceed 23kg (50lb) – so you cannot have a 25kg bag and a 5kg bag totaling 30kg as the first would be over the max weight limit.

If your bags are within the weight allowance, but you have an extra piece, Cathay’s excess baggage charge chart shows they should be applied in a to/from Zone 4 (South Africa) to/from Zone 4 (New Zealand) manner which would cost you $60 USD per piece, each way, but applied in local currency.

If you’re still confused, we suggest contacting Cathay Pacific’s reservations line – (080) 061-1206 from South Africa. Hope this helps!

Hi Catherine
I’m would like to ask if is it possible to book now an extra luggage going to the Philippines. My flight will be on 15 of this November. And how much?

Catherine Luther

November 10, 2019

Hi Glendalyn,

I don’t know where you’re flying from so I can’t assist with a price for extra baggage. Cathay Pacific allows passengers to pre-pay baggage for some flights so I advise you login to your booking or give their contact center a call.

I am flying at Cathay Pacific? How many check in luggage am I allowed to bring?
How much the cost of an extra luggage and is it possible to add an extra luggage now

Catherine Luther

November 11, 2019

Hi Glendalyn,

In my previous reply to you I asked where you are flying from (the departure country). Without this, I cannot assist as overweight luggage depends on the route. I also can’t advise on whether you can add luggage online as this varies by flight and we are not Cathay Pacific. You need to contact Cathay Pacific.

Hi Glendalyn, if you’re asking how to book an extra piece of luggage in advance, please see the “Can I Pre-pay for Baggage?” section above. It will outline the steps you need to take to do so. Thanks!

Please reply to me as soon as possible.

I’m scheduled for my flight this coming week and it seems like my baggage exceeds the limit by 1-2kg. How much will I need to pay if my baggage exceeds 1kg or 2 kg from Canada to the Philippines? Thanks

Jarrod West

November 25, 2019

Hi Cheryle,

Since this route works on a piece allowance, the charge for an overweight bag is supposed to be $200. However, since your bag is barley over, you could remove some items and place them in your carry-on or personal item.

Hi!
I am flying out of Jfk to Philippines on Monday and would just like to ask how much Cathay Pacific charges per kilogram of excess weight from the allowable 23kgs/per luggage?

Jarrod West

August 19, 2019

Hi Joseph,

For flights originating in the U.S. Cathay charges by piece instead of per kg. So to bring an extra bag it will cost $200.

Thanks for reading!

Sandra Evans

I am flying from Cairns to HK then on to Amsterdam economy. Is it cheaper to have 3 pieces of luggage or 2 that are overweight?

Jarrod West

August 25, 2019

Hi Sandra,

It would be cheaper to have two pieces of luggage that are overweight. Thanks for reading!

sandra

August 25, 2019

Really, the way I read it you pay $60 US for each additional bag over your weight allowance and you pay $65 per kg for overweight luggage. If that is correct, it’s cheaper to have extra bags.

Jarrod West

August 26, 2019

Hi Sanda,

It is $60 if you need an additional piece of luggage but are still within the weight allowance. If you’re planning to be over the weight allowance either way, then it would be cheaper to have two overweight bags so that you don’t have to pay for the weight of the third bag.

Juliet Sato

August 31, 2019

I am just wondering why I cannot add on an extra luggage from Sweden to the Philippines after I bought my ticket? I just received an email that I can add on an extra luggage but pay it in the airport. Now, what if it is very expensive when I pay it in the airport then I’m left with no choice but to buy it or throw my belongings?

Catherine Luther

September 02, 2019

Hi Juliet,

Cathay Pacific allows passengers to pre-pay luggage on selected flights only. Please be aware that we are not Cathay Pacific, we are UpgradedPoints, so if you have any questions as to why this is not possible, then you will need to contact the airline.

Krishika Gupta

September 01, 2019

I am an international student in Toronto, Canada.
I am travelling from New Delhi to Toronto with Cathay Pacific. I am allowed 2 pieces each of 23 kgs. Is it cheaper to have two overweight bags or one extra piece? How much both will cost?

Catherine Luther

September 02, 2019

Hi Krishika,

An additional bag would cost $220 (23 kg) or there would be a $150 charge per bag for excess weight from 23-32 kg. So an extra bag would be cheaper.

Wendy Liddel

Jarrod West

September 17, 2019

Hi Long,

You can bring two pieces that weigh 30kg combined, not each. If your bags weigh more than 30kg combined when you arrive to the airport you will be charged an overweight baggage fee.

What are the additional charges for check in luggage in addition of 23kg. +23kg that means additional 23kg luggage in economy class from Indianapolis to Hyderabad on Cathay Pacific Airlines?

Catherine Luther

India is zone 2 and Indianapolis is zone 5 so an additional bag would cost $220.

Hi Erin

I’m flying from Vancouver to Manila. I will have 7 bags. Two are included with the flight, but am I correct that I can take the other 5 @ $200 each (total $1,000)? Or is there a restriction on the number I can take? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Glen

Catherine Luther

October 17, 2019

Hi Glen,

Cathay Pacific doesn’t state a maximum limit to the number of extra bags you can check. We advise you give them a call or log in to your account using the ‘Manage Booking’ section on Cathay’s website to see how many bags you can add to your booking.

October 31, 2019

Hi there,

I will be flying from Ireland (Zone 4) to Japan (Zone1)and would like to buy an additional luggage for 30 kgs. Does it mean that I am allowed to have 1 bag 23 kg, and another bag for 7 kg? If then each piece would cost $60?
Thanks

Catherine Luther

November 01, 2019

Hi Freem,

With your free allowance of 30kg this can be split across 2 bags so you could have 1 bag of 23kg and 1 of 7kg. For your route, excess luggage is charged at $45 per kilogram so for an additional 30kg this would cost a hefty $1,350.

Catherine Luther

November 11, 2019

Hi Wahid,

An extra bag for that route would cost $220 and the weight of that bag would depend on your cabin:

Economy: 23kg / 50lb each
Premium Economy: 25kg / 55lb each
Business: 32kg / 70lb each
First: 32kg / 70lb each

Hi, i’m flying from Sydney to the Philippines via Cathy Pacific..am I allowed to have 30 kgs check in and 7 kgs hand carry..But I need an extra Piece of luggage.. how much do I need to pay in the airport? Am I allowed to have an extra piece of 23 kgs or 30 kgs?

Catherine Luther

December 05, 2019

Hi Grace,

Economy passengers for your route are permitted 30 kgs of checked luggage and 6.8 kgs for carry-on.

Cathay Pacific offers discounted pre-paid luggage on selected flights. To see if your flight is eligible, log in to your booking or get in touch with the Cathay Pacific Contact Center and benefit from up to 20% off pre-paid luggage. For an additional 30 kgs, the fee would be $180 per 5 kgs so 6 x $180 = $1,080. Purchased at the airport, the fee would be $1,350‬.

I have two luggage under 23 kilos and I have 1 guitar with guitar hard case, how much will it cost me for the musical instrument it only weight like 10 kilos i’m flying from LA to Hong Kong, then Hong Kong to Philippines. Do I need to pay for extra luggage which is a musical instrument and how much?

Catherine Luther

December 22, 2019

Hi Jessica,

An extra piece of luggage for that route would cost $200 and this must not exceed 80 inches / 203 linear cm otherwise you may be liable for additional oversize charges.

Mike

December 26, 2019

Hey guys,

I’m flying from Hong Kong to UK Heathrow soon and wanted to know if it is possible to bring two 30kg luggage. I’m not sure if I am understanding ‘60 USD for an extra piece’. Is that referring to the combined weight of 32kg? Or will I be able to take two luggage that are 30kg EACH

Catherine Luther

December 28, 2019

Hi Mike,

The free allowance of 30 kg can split across 2 bags. Passengers can pay $60 for another bag to split the 30 kg e.g. 3 x 10 kg bags. To increase your weight allowance, Cathay Pacific charges $45 per kilogram for your route, so you’re going to pay a lot for an additional 30 kg – a whopping $1,350.
