Avianca’s baggage policy trends along the general lines of other large carriers in that your first 1 to 2 checked bags are included (depending on cabin class/destination) with fees charged for additional pieces above your allowance.

These fees, in addition to those for overweight/oversized baggage, are a bit more complicated and are highly weight- and route-dependent as you’ll see in our tables below.

Avianca Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE with all fares
1 standard carry-on bag: FREE (excludes XS fare)

Size Restrictions

  • Personal: 18 x 14 x 10 inches (45.7 x 35.6 x 25.4 cm), but the airline references items such as a wallet, backpack, or laptop bag. This item should be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.
  • Standard: 22 x 14 x 10 inches (55.9 x 35.6 x 25.4 cm), up to 22 pounds (10 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

Avianca Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) for M and L fares; 70 pounds (32 kg) for XL and XXL fares, and max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

  • XS and S Fares: No checked luggage included
  • M and L Fares: 1 x 50-pound (23 kg) bag
  • XL Fare: 1 x 70-pound (32 kg) bag
  • XXL Fare: 2 x 70-pound (32 kg) bags

Baggage allowances can vary by fare type so it’s a good idea to check your allowance.

For baggage fees related to sporting goods, please refer to Avianca’s policy.

For baggage fees related to all other special luggage, please refer to Avianca’s policy.

Do you accept boxes? What size? And how much? Please. Thanks.

Erin Miller

June 05, 2018

Hi Marisol – we cannot directly answer your questions as we aren’t Avianca Airline. Upgraded Points is a website dedicated to publishing information related to points, miles, and general travel tips. That being said, we can tell you we did not come across specific information related to checking “boxes” when we compiled this article.

We recommend contacting Avianca directly either by phone or via their online chat option.

If you’re in the US, their call center phone number is 1-800-284-2622. If you’re outside of the US, you can find their other contact phone numbers here.

If you’d like to utilize their online chat option, you can do so here.

We hope you find the information you’re looking for!

It seems you’ve given two conflicting pieces of information on checked baggage between South Colombia and Europe.

In one section you say only one piece of checked baggage is allowed, in another you say two checked pieces are allowed. Could you please clarify

Catherine Luther

April 23, 2019

Hi Cameron, this has been corrected after a recent update to Avianca’s baggage policy. Economy passengers are permitted to bring 1 piece of checked luggage for routes to Europe weighing up to 23kg.

Lost too much money on Economy tickets with Covid Problems. I fly only XXL Premier with Avianca now. The two free 70 lb checked bags, Refundable/Changeable tickets and more generous and pleasant seats have my paying only about $40 over Economy. In the past two years I have had a collection of 11 or 12 Economy tickets go bad. About $4000 worth. Avianca makes the upgrades very affordable. And I don’t have inconsiderate seat recliners and seat kickers bothering me.

Does anyone know if they have curbside baggage check at Mexico City Juarez Airport? That would really make things good.

How much do you charge for over sized bags?

Catherine Luther

April 13, 2019

Hi Roxana,

Just to make you aware, we are not Avianca – we are Upgraded Points, so the information we advise is based on what we have sourced from Avianca’s baggage fee page.

Excess charges are route dependent and you can view these fees in the table above in the last column. Oversized checked baggage is anything measuring a linear total of 158cm – 230cm.

I will be flying from LAX to El Salvador and I’m trying to figure out how many bags I am allowed to bring. I know that I have a personal item bag and a carry on bag. Does it also include a 50lb bag? I’m not sure what fare type I purchased but in my email, it says coach – medium, I don’t know if that helps!

Catherine Luther

January 04, 2021

Hi Cynthia,

Avianca has a baggage calculator that you can use. For your route and fare type M, the calculator states that 1 x 50lb bag would be included in your ticket.

July 14, 2019

Hi I bought 3 tickets in January this years for 2 adults one child from London to Cali ( Colombia) with two bags of 23kg allowed to each person plus cabin bag, I paid for the ticket for my 3 years old and she is allowed also to two bags of 23kg plus cabin. Can we take the small stroller free of charge? Thanks

Catherine Luther

July 15, 2019

Hi Danny,

According to Avianca’s baggage policy an umbrella stroller or fully collapsible stroller, weighing less than 20 lbs. / 9 kg is exempt from baggage charges. Any strollers 20 lbs./9 kg up to 50 lbs./ 23 kg and/or with total dimensions exceeding 158 cm/62 linear inches up to 230 cm/90 inches may be subject to oversized charges.

Hi, I am traveling with Avianca to San Salvador and I have 2 extra bags. I just wanted to know how big or tall my suitcases should be to be within the range for 50lbs.

Catherine Luther

July 30, 2019

Hi Claudia,

Avianca’s maximum size for a piece of checked luggage is 158cm (max linear dimensions). To calculate this, add the length + width + depth of your bag.

Hello, I’m traveling to El Salvador from California. Business class.
I understand I can bring 2 pieces 70 lbs each, plus a carry on and a personal item free of charge.
If I want to bring an extra bag same size and weight as the two above, how much would I have to pay for it?
Thank you very much.

Hello. I am traveling from Orlando, Fl to Bogota with my son, who is 10 years old and who, of course, has his own economy ticket. Is a check bag included in his ticket too? Thank you

Does Avianca consider a backpack a carry-on?

Jarrod West

November 06, 2019

Hi Hector,

If your backpack can fit underneath the seat in front of you then it will count as a personal item. If it is larger than that then they will likely count it as a carry-on.

Jason Rider

Where would I find out if I can get a refund for extra baggage on Avianca? There are no details on their website. I paid a few hundred GBP so I can take my belongings from the UK to Colombia where I now reside but can no longer fly as they have cancelled the flight. I know I can refund the ticket but I don’t think they will include the extras.

It seems Avianca has changed their rules since this article was written. Does anybody know if a Star Alliance gold card (not an Avianca/LifeMiles gold card) entitles me to a free check-in bag if I purchase the XS-fare?

Jarrod West

March 16, 2022

Hi Mike,

Star Alliance Gold allows an additional 20 kg (44 pounds) where the weight concept applies, or one additional piece of luggage where the piece concept applies.
