Asiana Airlines is conveniently straightforward when it comes to baggage fees. The South Korea-based airline uses a weight allowance for domestic flights with no maximum number of items permitted, and a clear-cut piece allowance for all other routes.

If you’re part of the Asiana Club, then you will receive a generous allowance of additional baggage on top of the standard amount.

Asiana Carry-on Allowance

1 Personal item: FREE of charge

Economy: 1 standard carry-on item (22 pounds/10 kg) FREE of charge
First and Business Class: 2 standard carry-on items (22 pounds/10 kg) FREE of charge

Size Restrictions:

  • Personal item: Undisclosed, but Asiana’s website references items such as a small briefcase, laptop computer, or duty-free item.
  • Standard carry-on item: The sum of L + W + H may not exceed 45 inches (115 cm), with maximum dimensions of:
    • L = 21 inches (55 cm)
    • W = 16 inches (40 cm)
    • H = 8 inches (20 cm)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

Stroller Check Policy

  • A small collapsible stroller is allowed to be taken onboard when room permits, but “larger” strollers will be handled as checked baggage at the gate and received back at the gate of the destination.
  • Infants are permitted 1 50-pound (23 kg) bag on U.S. flight routes and a 22-pound (10 kg) bag on all other international flights.

Asiana Checked Baggage Allowance

The size of the bag may not exceed a L x W x H sum of 62 inches (158 cm) including wheels and handles.

I have just bought a checked baggage suitcase with L=164 cm, W=40 cm, H=26 cm for Asiana Airline economy class. I want to know if it exceeds the dimension restriction.

Catherine Luther

August 29, 2019

Hi Roth,

Yes, that exceeds Asiana Airlines’ maximum baggage allowance of 158 linear cms.

Tracey

September 29, 2019

If I go over baggage allowance do I get charged $2 per kg or $60 usd?

Jarrod West

September 29, 2019

Hi Tracey,

That depends on which route you are flying. If you provide that information we could give you an exact figure.

Thanks for reading!

August 31, 2020

My flight is from Tokyo to Uzbekistan through Korea and my baggage allowance is 23kg. I am also wondering how much I have to pay for each extra kg because my baggage is now around 25kg (about 2 kg extra)? On the website it is written like excess weight is charged at $1.7 per kg but it is also written like excess weight from 24-28 is $40 to Japan. I would be so thankful if you can clarify my question. Thank you so much in advance!

Jarrod West

September 11, 2020

Hi Gulnoza,

For this route, the fee you pay should be $40. Thanks for reading!

What is the excess baggage fee (one box) San Francisco to Philippines?

September 19, 2019

Hi Nun,

For U.S. routes, Asiana Airlines charges $200 for an additional 23 kg bag.

Hi, I’m going from GMP to Tokyo, just wondering how much baggage allowance I can have?

September 29, 2019

Hi Tracey,

You can bring 1 person item, 1 carry-on bag, and 1 checked bag (not exceeding 23 kg/50lbs).

Hi, going to US via Seattle from Edmonton. I have a carry-on that is 53cm height by 22 depth and 35 width, is that okay as carry on or will I be charged? And weight is 8 kilos?

Catherine Luther

December 29, 2019

Hi Laurence,

I would say that bag would be fine, especially if it’s a soft bag that you can squash slightly if asked to place in a bag sizer. The sum of L + W + H may not exceed 115 cm. The maximum weight of a carry-on is 10 kg.

I have a 2 piece baggage allowance but now I want to bring 1 more piece of baggage weighing 23kg. How much will I be charged?

Catherine Luther

September 30, 2019

Hi Anyhow,

This would depend on where you are traveling to and from. If you can provide this information then we will try to assist you.

Hi,
I want to bring a used 32″ TV to the Philippines. My Home Depot box dimensions will total to 63 linear inches and weight will be less than the allowed 50 lbs. Will I be subjected to an additional fee? How much? If dimensions and weight don’t exceed allowed, will there be no additional fee on TV if within my allowed 2 baggages?

Catherine Luther

October 10, 2019

Hi Susan,

Providing the package does not exceed Asiana Airlines’ maximum size and weight restrictions, then they should allow you to check the TV as part of your standard allowance.

Elizabeth tiano

October 10, 2019

Hi, my mom visited us here in Canada and she’s going back home to the Philippines, in economy class. How many checked baggs is she allowed? If we use a balikbayan box, how much weight is allowed and what is the charge?

Jarrod West

October 11, 2019

Hi Elizabeth,

Your mother should be allowed to bring 1 checked bag that does not exceed 23 kgs or 50 lbs. If you use a Balikbayan box then it too should not be larger than 23 kgs or 50 lbs. The box also cannot exceed 158 cms in total dimensions. Keep in mind that we are not Asiana Airlines so feel free to contact them directly for more information!

I will buy a booking for flight with Asiana from Qingdao to Lisbon (Qingdao-Seoul-Lisbon). I see that I have 1 piece of baggage free up to 23kg but I would like to buy one more checked bag for me and another for my wife. How much will it cost?

Catherine Luther

Hi, my parents will go home on Sunday..departing from Incheon Airport in Korea going back to the Philippines Clark Airport..they have 1 luggage each that weigh 40kg each..so that means they exceed 17 kilos each per luggage. How much will they have to pay for their extra kilos? Thank you in advance for your answer

Catherine Luther

October 17, 2019

Hi Rachelle,

If a bag weighs 33 kg-45 kg, Asiana Airlines charges $170 (per bag). The airline also states that advance notice is required for these overweight bags so you will need to contact Asiana Airlines to inform them.

Tess tamayao

You will be charged $100 per overweight bag for that route.

Nolan Paraiso

October 22, 2019

What is the allowed amount of ammunition to be checked in?

Christine Krzyszton

October 23, 2019

Hi Nolan. While the Asiana Airlines web site states that bullets are allowed in check in baggage, it does not state a limit. It also states that airline approval is required for these restricted items. You will need to contact Asiana directly. You can read more here. https://flyasiana.com/C/US/EN/contents/restricted-transport-items

I am a GOLD Asiana Club member. I am going home to the Phil this Nov. I want to check in a 3rd luggage of 50 lbs ( aside from the 2 free luggage of 50 lbs allowed by the airline. I am flying economy class. Is my third check in luggage free of charge since I am a GOLD Asiana club member?
Thank you for your help and information

Catherine Luther

November 04, 2019

Hi Malou,

Where are you flying from and do you mean you are flying to the Philippines?

Rose

November 08, 2019

Hi! Our flight will be SFO-MNL-SFO. We are planning to bring balikbayan boxes. The boxes measures: 44.5 cm and 60 cm. width, 54cm height. We will make sure that it will not be heavier than 50 lbs.

My concern is if the balikbayan boxes will be accepted as checked in baggages. Thanks,

Catherine Luther

November 09, 2019

Hi Rose,

Providing your box does not exceed maximum linear dimensions of 158cm then you would be able to check the item. Those measurements are slightly over so you must be prepared to pay oversized charges if the airline does not accept the piece.

jr

November 09, 2019

Hi, is a backpack considered as a personal item? Will they weigh my carry-on baggage and personal item together? Thank you.

Erin Miller

November 10, 2019

Hi JR, according to the information on Asiana’s baggage fee policy on their webpage, the following are allowed:

“You may take one of the following items into the cabin, in addition to your carry-on baggage.
Small briefcase
Handbook
Laptop computer
Book
Small duty-free item
Infant food to be eaten during the flight
Staff or crutches for disabled passengers
Guide dog for visually handicapped passengers
Small stroller that can be folded flat”

Most airlines will allow a small backpack as a personal item, however, the general rule is that it must be smaller than your carry-on.

Asiana does not state whether or not these items will be weighed separately or together.

I suggest calling Asiana’s customer service line directly to inquire with them. SOrry to not be of more help!

Marivic Tolenada

November 15, 2019

Hi, I will depart from Chicago to Seoul and I have 2 bags free, but my Seoul to Clark has only 1 bag. Do I need to pay the other bag? If yes, how much will it cost? Is it by weight or by the number of bags? Thank you for your help.

Catherine Luther

November 17, 2019

Hi Marivic,

If you booked both of your flights on 1 ticket, then you should have the checked baggage allowance of the most significant flight. But as we’re not Asiana Airlines we can’t confirm this for you 100% and you should contact the airline to confirm.

Ed Tanedo

December 03, 2019

I am planning to fly from Seattle to the Philippines and thinking about bringing a flat-screen tv, probably 55 inches. The total dimension will definitely exceed the allowable size, but the weight will be in the allowed range. Do you know if ASIANA will allow it and how much it would cost? Many Thanks.

Jarrod West

December 03, 2019

Hi Ed,

It is likely that you will be able to bring the TV as checked luggage, but it will probably be subject to an oversized bag fee. Asiana does not publish what this charge will be on their website, so you will need to contact them directly.

Thanks and Happy Holidays

Catherine Luther

December 21, 2019

Hi Ken,

You should have 1 piece included for that route and according to Asiana’s excess baggage information, you would pay $110 for the first additional bag and $160 for the second.

I have two baggage, one is 46 lbs and the other one is 54 lbs, is that ok? Still total 100 lbs.

Jarrod West

January 14, 2020

Hi Fernando,

Unfortunatley, Asiana requires each bag to be under 50 lbs, even if the combined weight is less than 100 lbs.

I recommend you move 4 pounds from one suitcase to the other so that both are under the stated weight limit.

Tony

July 24, 2020

I will fly from London to Phnom Penh in August. Can I have a carrying bag with a small stroller and a guitar on the plan as I did before with another airline? If I want to have an extra suitcase and a bike in a box (bike standard 140cm), what is the price?

Jarrod West

August 26, 2020

Hi Tony,

Yes, you should be allowed to bring a small stroller and guitar on the plane. As for an extra piece of luggage, for this route it should cost $140 as long as it weighs no more than 23 kgs.

Safe travels!

Could you please explain it more in detail? Does it mean I will be entitled to 1 extra checked bag (23kg)?

Asiana permits lap infants 1 x 22 pound (10 kg) checked bag.

Tracey T

February 11, 2020

Hello,

I am flying from JFK to Tokyo, with a transfer in Seoul. I am having such a hard time finding any store with the correct carry-on requirements for Asiana carry-on, (21.6″×15.7″×7.8″). The main issue is the depth. All bags sold in stores have a depth of 8″-11″. How strict is the airline when it comes to this? If I buy a bag that is 9″ deep, will I have to pay the checked fee for exceeding limits?

Thanks,
Tracey T.

Catherine Luther

February 12, 2020

Hi Tracey,

We can’t comment on how strict the airline is as it can depend entirely on the gate agent on the day. There should be a little flex with the conversion from cm to inches so you should be fine with a 8″ deep bag.

Jarrod West

March 05, 2020

Hi Guen,

Could you clarify which Clark you are referring to? Is it in the U.S.? If so then your mother should be able to be two checked bags weighing up to 50 pounds each. If it is not in the U.S. then she can bring one checked bag for free.

Hi! I am flying on Asiana Airlines from Frankfurt, Germany to CRK (Clark International-Angeles City, Philippines). I have a connecting flight at Seoul.

I have an economy ticket. I have 1 checked baggage weighing 22 kg. And another checked baggage weighing 20kg. Both are within allowed size. How much should it cost for an excess/extra baggage?

I have looked on their website but I am confused that the price might be doubled because of my connecting flight.
Thank you for your answer.

Jarrod West

June 05, 2020

Hi Lean,

Your extra bag should cost $140, and the price should not be doubled due to your connection. Thanks for reading!

Michele

June 11, 2020

Hello, I have an Asiana flight from Nagoya to Rome (connection in Seoul) so I understand that their policy is only 1 checked baggage allowed since it is a non-U.S. route.

Since I need to bring more baggage (3 in total, to be specific), how much would the fee be? Is it $210 in total or $420 since it is 2 bags more than the 1 allowed?

Thanks for the clarification!

Jarrod West

June 17, 2020

Hi Michele,

Your charge for extra bags should be $140 for the first extra bag, and $210 for the second extra bag. For a total of $350.

Thanks for reading and safe travels!

Sorik

June 30, 2020

Hello, I am traveling from London to Phnom Penh via Seoul on economy class. The baggage allowance is only 1 piece. So I am thinking of purchasing an additional 2 pieces. However, I can’t do it online. Do you happen to know why? When I tried clicking apply to purchase it says “You cannot pre-purchase baggage allowance for the itinerary you selected.” I noticed you have mentioned above that we cant pre-purchase. But Asiana staff told me to do online. So would like to check if you happen to know why it does not work online.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Jarrod West

July 06, 2020

Hi Sorik,

I cannot say for certain why Asiana is not allowing you to purchase online for your selected route. The best advice that I can offer is for you to contact them again and let them know that their website is not allowing you to complete the purchase. It might be the case that there is an IT issue that needs to be resolved.

Thanks for reading and safe travels!

I am traveling from Japan to the Philippines with a connecting flight to Incheon. I have 3 bags with a total weight of 44kg. The extra piece is a box of e-drum with an amplifier. Am I going to pay for the extra piece even if the total weight is just 44kg?

Jarrod West

July 09, 2020

Hi Albert,

I’m assuming that your 3 bags are comprised of 1 carry-on bag and 2 checked bags? If so, yes you likely will need to pay for the extra checked bag since Asiana only allows for 1 free checked bag on non-U.S. routes.

Safe travels!

September 08, 2020

Hello, I am traveling to Manila from Incheon. I get 1 free piece of luggage weighing up to 23kgs. I also reserved another piece of luggage 23kg (it cost 99,000 won). Can I bring my electric guitar to the cabin? Or should it be checked as a 3rd bag? Or is it possible to have 1 small luggage + electric guitar with a total weight of 23kg?

Thank you.

Jarrod West

September 09, 2020

Hi Vira,

How large is your guitar? Carry-on items with Asiana cannot exceed 45 inches (115 cm), with maximum dimensions of:
L = 21.6 inches (55 cm)
W = 15.7 inches (40 cm)
H = 7.9 inches (20 cm)

If your guitar exceeds these dimensions then it will need to be checked. Thanks for reading!

I am traveling from seoul to manila as a merchant marine or seafarer. I’m confused because in my ticket allowed check-in baggage is 2 pcs / 23kg. But when i get to their website site econ class is 1 piece / 23 kg.

Can you please help me with this?

Hi Allan,

If your ticket states that you’re entitled to 2 pieces of luggage weighing up to 23 kgs then that is what you should be able to bring. If you have any other specific questions I recommend you contact Asiana customer service directly at 1-800-227-4262.

I’m traveling between Jeju Island and Seoul this week. I want to bring my hockey bag (under 20 kgs) and a hockey stick. Are one hockey stick and one hockey bag okay?

I am traveling from Tokyo Narita to Incheon. I’m bringing one laptop bag, one carry-on baggage, and 2 checked bags of 23kg each. What luggage is free and which will I have to pay extra for?

Hi Alejandro,

You should only need to pay for your second checked bag, and the price should be $80.

Safe travels!

Hello, I am traveling from Taipei to Los Angeles through Seoul, and my ticket includes two checked bags but I have 3 bags. Can I bring the 3 bags, and how much will I pay for the extra checked bag?

Hi! If I travel from China (Changchun) to Incheon and my checked-in bags total dimensions including wheels and handles is 160cm, is there any chance at all that I can bring it for free? The bag is a little flexible.

Hi Mary,

If your bag is oversized, there are no guarantees with any airline that this will be permitted. It’s likely that it would be fine, but it can depend completely on the check-in agent on the day.

I have 2 pieces of checked luggage each weighing 23 kgs. If I only bring 1 bag, how many kgs is it allowed to be?

Hello,

I am planning to buy an extra luggage and my flight is from Seoul to Philippines. Technically it a connecting flight coming from Germany. It states that the amount to pay is $110, is that already back and forth?

Hi Sarena,

If that is the price you were quoted, and the whole itinerary was booked together, then yes that should be the round-trip price.
