ANA has a generous baggage policy in comparison with most airlines — even economy travelers get 2 bags included in their base fare.

However, if you’re traveling with overweight or oversized bags, it’s important to note that ANA will charge a fee each time you exceed a category.

ANA Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
1 standard carry-on bag: FREE

Size Restrictions

  • Personal: undisclosed
  • Standard: 22 x 16 x 10 inches (55 x 40 x 25 cm), no more than 22 pounds (10 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-Oon Policy: Strollers can be brought onboard if they adhere to the carry-on size allowance. If a stroller is brought onboard then this would count towards the passenger’s carry-on allowance.

Stroller Check Policy:

  • Strollers will be checked at the gate free of charge. However, if checking the stroller at the ticket counter is desired, ANA’s baby strollers are also available to borrow from the counter until the boarding gate.
  • Lap infants are permitted 1 piece of checked luggage at the same weight allowance as the accompanying adult.

ANA Checked Baggage Allowance

For Domestic Routes

All checked bags must adhere to max linear dimensions of 81.9 inches (208 cm). Economy passengers have a weight allowance of 44 pounds (20 kg) and premium class passengers have a weight allowance of 88 pounds (40 kg).

There are no restrictions on the number of pieces you can bring, provided the combined weight does not exceed the permitted allowance.

For International Route Sectors

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) for economy and premium economy, 70 pounds (32 kg) for business and first class fares, and all checked bags must adhere to max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

Economy/Premium Economy: first 2 bags included (50 pounds/23 kg)
Business: first 2 bags included (70 pounds/32 kg)
First: first 3 bags included (70 pounds/32 kg)

Hot Tip: ANA states your free baggage allowance should be clearly printed on your e-Ticket/Receipt, which can be found on the reservation details page. This ANA link is helpful in showing you where to find this information.

Hi, can I confirm if check-in baggage allowance to U.S. from Singapore is 2 pieces (each weighing up to 23 kg or 50 lb) per person?

Can we carry a bag with linear dimension of 177 cms with 32 kgs instead of 2 bags of 23 kgs each?

Erin Miller

March 20, 2019

Hi KP, ANA states that the max linear dimensions of any bag shall not exceed 158cm. Since your bag is 177cm, you’ll be subject to an ‘excess baggage charge’.

Additionally, if you’ve purchased an economy fare, airlines are pretty strict about your weight limit. ANA’s weight limit per bag for economy travelers is 23kg. Anything over will incur an excess charge.

Lastly, it’s important to note with ANA that if you exceed both weight and size, you’re subject to BOTH excess charges.

The charges applied will depend on your flight route — you can see more details on Excess Baggage at ANA’s site here.

I just read the allowances, am travelling from Australia to Japan with skis, thought it said that sports equipment can be up to 292cm?

Hi Janis,

According to the ANA website, the overall allowance will depend on the routing. For the exact allowance for your situation, I would contact ANA directly.

Are you allowed to have one luggage weigh 35kg while the other weighs 10kg? I am traveling from the Philippines to Chicago, Illinois.

Hi Rich,

According to ANA, each bag must weigh less than 23 kg apiece, or else it will be subject to excess baggage fees.

March 23, 2019

Hi, I just want to ask if the check-in baggage allowance for Manila to Osaka flight is 2 pieces and each is weighing up to 23kg or 50lbs per person? Thanks!

Erin Miller

March 23, 2019

Hi Mariz, this should be correct since this is an international flight. However, since we are not ANA, we cannot 100% confirm.

ANA does state that your free baggage allowance should be clear on your e-Ticket/Receipt which can be found on the reservation details page. This link is very helpful in telling you where to find this information. Hope this helps!

Hello,

I need to check, my baggage is not more than 18kg but I am not sure about the size of may bag. The bag capacity is up to 30kg but my total baggage is not more than 18kg.
I will be travelling Osaka to Haneda on NH. I hope baggage will not be any issue in my case, as I want to avoid excess charges.

Please advise.

Catherine Luther

March 29, 2019

Hi Sanchita,

For checked luggage, ANA has a maximum linear size allowance of 158cm, so you would need to measure the length + height + width of your bag to calculate this.

We’re not sure what cabin you’re traveling in, but it’s worth noting that Economy and Premium Economy has a maximum weight allowance of 23kg per bag, Business and First Class has 32kg per bag.

March 31, 2019

Hi, I am traveling from New Delhi to Calgary by NH828 & AC10. I am allowed to take two 23 kg bags and I want to know how much I will be charged for my one extra 23 kg bag.
Thank you.

Erin Miller

March 31, 2019

Hi A, according to ANA’s website, this should be a charge of $200 USD for the outbound flight (converted to the local currency of the country of departure) and 200 CAD for the return flight.

Please keep in mind we are not ANA, this is simply what we have gleaned from their website – for the most accurate information, we suggest calling their customer service department.

Mars

April 16, 2019

Hello,

I will have 2 extra bags from KL to Tokyo. Can you confirm that it is 100USD per piece? Can I pay cash at the airport? What currency do I pay in?

I tried to look at the ANA website to no avail.

Thank you.

Erin Miller

April 17, 2019

Hi Mars – First, please be advised we are not ANA. We are Upgraded Points, a website publishing points and miles based articles and additional travel content like this baggage fee article. As such, we can give you our best researched answer, but we cannot 100% confirm any fee as we are not ANA – you would have to call their customer service line for that.

ANA’s policies state that on international flights, economy passengers (you did not state which cabin class you are flying so I am just assuming economy here) are allowed two free checked bags up to 23kg/50lbs a piece.

For extra bags, ANA states “The currency and fee applied vary depending on the itinerary, the sector on which baggage is checked in, as well as the airport at which the payment is made.” The currency should be USD when you are paying in Malaysia, and JPY when you are paying in Japan.

Currently, the way ANA shows pricing on their website, you should expect to pay $100 per extra bag, per leg of your trip. If you have 2 extra bags both ways, this should amount to $400 total for extra baggage fees.

If you would like to prepay online, please see our “Can I Prepay for Baggage” section above for more details. In terms of if you can pay cash at the airport? Many airport ticketing desks no longer accept cash payments – this varies by airline and even airport in some cases. We are unable to confirm whether or not you can pay cash but if this is your only option (vs. prepaying online or paying via cc) we suggest you call ANA first to confirm you can do so.

Hope this helps…

May 15, 2019

Hi, I’m leaving the United States and flying to Tokyo. Are there any restrictions for my checked bags? Can I bring lotion, vitamins, makeup and perfume in my checked bag. Not my carry on.

Catherine Luther

May 15, 2019

Hi Phi,

You can view ANA’s restricted items on the airline’s website.

In regards to cosmetics, ANA states:

“Non-radioactive Cosmetics and Drugs (Including Hair Spray)

2 kg or 2 liters per person are permitted to be checked in or carried on board in containers of up to 0.5 kg or 0.5 liters.

* Sprays must have their valve secured by a cap or other adequate method to prevent the content from accidentally leaking out.
* When checking in non-radioactive cosmetics or drugs and sprays for sporting equipment or daily use together, their combined amount must not exceed 2 kg or 2 liters.”

So the items you mentioned should be fine, provided they are within ANA’s stated restrictions.

For a passenger traveling from Tokyo to Singapore, is the cost of excess baggage US$60 for any excess between 23kg – 32kg?
Thank you.

Erin Miller

April 21, 2019

Hi Patricia – that’s what ANA shows on their website to be correct, yes. Remember, if you exceed both weight AND size, you’ll be charged the sum of both fees.

Gary Hagan

May 12, 2019

My daughter is travelling from the US to Japan on ANA. Above you say that travelers get 2 bags included in their base fare. Is this including the carry-on (i.e only one checked bag and one carry on), or can she have 2 checked bags (compliant with size and weight each) plus the carry-on? Thanks!

Catherine Luther

May 13, 2019

Hi Gary, the carry-on allowance would be in addition to the 2 checked bags.

isao suma

May 13, 2019

I heard a rumor that some carriers do not allow smart backpacks (that have smartphone chargers attached to the backpack) as carry on baggage or even as check-in baggage. What’s your policy?

Erin Miller

May 14, 2019

Hi Isao, please be informed we are not ANA. We are Upgraded Points, a website publishing educational information on points and miles strategies as well as other travel related articled such as this baggage fee post.

As such, we can’t confirm ANA’s policy on this. That being said, we attempted to search their website but have found no specific mention of smart backpacks. They DO mention that lithium-ion batteries are not permitted in checked luggage and in terms of carry on baggage, items with lithium-ion batteries are allowed but only if the battery can be removed.

We suggest calling ANA’s customer service and inquiring directly with them for the most accurate answer to your question.

Please advise.

May 16, 2019

Hi Jessica,

Yes, that’s correct. ANA permits Economy passengers to bring 2 checked bags weighing up to 23kg each within their free allowance.

Thanks

Hello,

I would like to know how many baggage we can bring to the flight NH378
from Nakashibetsu to Tokyo?
My booking code is xxxxxx.

Also – when will I get the tickets? When doing check-in?

Thank you

Tal

Catherine Luther

June 10, 2019

Hi Tal,

For a domestic flight, passengers flying economy are permitted to bring 20kg of checked luggage and passengers flying premium class can bring 40kg. A single item may not exceed total linear dimensions of 203 cm.

Please be aware that we are not ANA – we are UpgradedPoints.com so we can’t comment on when you will receive your tickets. Please contact the airline for this information. I have removed your booking reference for your privacy.

Hello,
I am traveling from Houston Texas to Manila. I have 2 check-in luggage and 1 hand carry and 1 pc. sporting { fiberglass diving fins }. The diving fins are 8 x 38 inch or 20 x 95 cm and 3kg in weight. What is the procedure to check in? And in case 1 luggage exceeds 23 kg, my understanding is that I will pay $60.
Thank you and best regards

Catherine Luther

June 27, 2019

Hi Arceli,

ANA accepts sporting equipment with a weight not exceeding 45 kg and total linear dimensions (length, width, height) not exceeding 292 cm. This can be checked as part of your free baggage allowance but if you have already exceeded your allowance then you will need to pay for an additional bag ($200). If one of your checked bags exceeds 23 kg then then excess charge for 23-32 kg is $60.

Hello,
I’m still confused and have some other information to ask. My flight is on July 8, 2019. My 1st luggage is already 29.94 kg. and the 2nd is 21.65kg. I’m bringing my medicine with me because I’m a diabetic and using insulin. Is it possible to put my V-GO disposable insulin device and my insulin that needs ice, in my hand carry bag? Can I hand carry my diving fins that measure 8 x 38 inch or 20 x 95 cm and 3.0kg together with my hand carry luggage that has 6.5kg + 3.0 kg the diving fins a total of 9.5 kg? In my understanding, I will pay 60$ for the excess. is it correct? Need asap reply.

thanks and best regards,
Arceli Arcilla

Erin Miller

July 02, 2019

Hi Arceli, since we are not ANA, we are not comfortable speaking to the specific regulations for your medical equipment and medications. Additionally, since the rest of your question is very specific, and again – we are not ANA – we suggest you call their customer service line directly to inquire with them directly. Sorry to not be of more assistance.

Chablis Applewhite

August 05, 2019

Thank you for the very concise information. I wonder if you could explain the baggage charges/ allowances for an international flight (LAX- NRT- SGN / ANA airline flight the whole way), economy class, with a small pet. I understand the fee for the pet is $400 USD.

My question is, do you think I am still allowed to have 2 pieces of checked luggage at the allowable weight of 50 lbs each, and the pet crate ($400) and a carry on and a personal item? I am moving to Vietnam, so this is a one way trip.

Catherine Luther

August 09, 2019

Hi Chablis,

Your standard ticket would include your carry-on, personal item and 2 pieces of checked luggage. The service fee for the transportation of your pet would be separate and this would not be considered part of your checked luggage.

Hello,

Thanks for the information.

I will be travelling from KUL to Japan in December. However, I still confuse with the measurement of luggage size. Is it the height including handle even though the handle can stretch out and draw back?

September 06, 2019

Hi Matthew,

The maximum measurement includes wheels and handles, when the handle is retracted in its stored position.

I am flying from Tokyo to Singapore in a few days.

Is that okay or will I incur fees?

Thank you.

The economy allowance for international routes is 2 x 23 kg bags so a combined total of 46 kg.

NEERAJ

November 17, 2019

We are planning to travel from Houston to Perth via Tokyo. We are allowed 2 baggage of 23Kg each in economy. Can we carry an extra checked bag? What will the cost per extra baggage be?

Also, if we want to make a stopover of 3/4 days how will that work? Will the baggage go directly to Perth or will they take them out in Tokyo for our stopover period?
Your assistance will be helpful in planning our trip

Jarrod West

November 28, 2019

Hi Neeraj,

For this route, ANA would usually charge $200 to bring an extra checked bag. As far as stopovers go, if you’re planning to stopover in Tokyo for 3 to 4 days, and your tickets state that, your luggage will be given back to you in Tokyo.

January 21, 2020

Hi! I’ll be flying with ANA for a domestic route (HND – KIX) and want to confirm things regarding check-in baggage. Is the maximum 20 kg free baggage allowance applied to total baggage? If I bring 2 suitcases (weighing 20 kg and 25 kg each), I will be charged ¥6,000 (¥5,000 for Each item exceeding checked baggage allowance + ¥1,000 for Overweight 23-32 kg). Is that correct? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Jarrod West

January 21, 2020

I will be travelling from Haneda, Japan to Manila, Philippines. I understand that the free check-in baggage is 2 pieces of baggage with a weight of 23kgs each, a total of 46kgs.
What if I have only 1 check-in baggage with the weight of about 35kgs, do I still need to pay a charge? Thanks.

Hi Teddy,

If a piece of luggage exceeds 23 kg, you would be charged an overweight fee of ¥20,000/$200.

I have 2 extra bags. I just want to know how much per piece is an extra bag from Narita to Manila?

Hi Arnold,

The excess baggage fee that route should be $100 per bag.

I will be flying from KL to the USA through ANA and United, and I would like to have a carry on bag (approx.10kg), a backpack with electronics like a camera, laptop, power bank, etc. Could you please advise if this is possible?

Hi Kayla,

Yes, you should be perfectly fine to bring those items.

Hi, my carry on is already 22lbs. I have a backpack as my personal item, and it has my laptop in it and some other personal stuff. Will they weigh my backpack too??

Hi Yhan,
They most likely won’t weigh either of your carry-on items. In my years and years of travel I have never seen a carry-on item get weighed so you should be just fine.
