Aer Lingus’ checked baggage policy is a little unusual for its European flights but provides lots of flexibility for purchasing different weights, with the ability to split that weight across multiple pieces.

Baggage can be up to 50% cheaper when purchased online at booking, so make sure you plan ahead for the cheapest rates.

Aer Lingus Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
Standard carry-on bag: FREE for all fare types on transatlantic flights and for Plus/Advantage/AerSpace fares on European flights

Size and Weight Restrictions

  • Personal item: 10 x 13 x 8 inches (25 x 33 x 20 cm)
  • Carry-on:
    • Standard allowance: 21.5 x 15.5 x 9.5 inches (55 x 40 x 24 cm) and 22 pounds (10 kg)
    • Regional allowance (operated by Emerald Airlines): 18.5 x 13 x 8 inches (48 x 33 x 20 cm) and 15 pounds (7 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • Infants are not permitted any carry-on allowance, so any items would need to be included in the adult’s carry-on.

Stroller Check Policy

  • Passengers may check a stroller, and 1 other item such as a car seat, booster seat, or travel cot. The stroller can be checked at the ticketing desk or at the gate.

Aer Lingus Checked Baggage Allowance

Individual checked bags may not exceed maximum linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm), including handles and wheels. If your fare type has a higher weight allowance, then the maximum a single piece can weigh is 70 pounds (32 kg).

Flights Within Europe

Plus, Advantage, and AerSpace Fares

Plus, Advantage, and AerSpace fares include a 44-pound (20 kg) bag, with the option to purchase more weight.

Saver Fare

Saver fares do not include any baggage, so this must be purchased separately. All passengers can pay for an extra piece, but this doesn’t increase the weight, it just allows the passenger to split the weight across multiple pieces.

The baggage fee depends on the distance of the route and when the bag is added to the booking. Adding your bag online can save up to 50% compared to the airport fee. Passengers can only add 44 pounds (20 kg) of luggage at the airport (excess weight is charged at €10 per kilo at the airport) — the other weight options are not available then.

Can I Prepay for Baggage?

Aer Lingus does allow passengers the ability to prepay luggage online to save up to 50% compared to airport prices.

These are the ways you can prepay:

Credit Cards That Reimburse You for Checked Bag Fees

If you will be checking several bags for your Aer Lingus flight or your luggage is overweight or oversized, use one of the cards below to be reimbursed for the cost. Each Capital One card recommended allows you to redeem miles for 1 cent each as a statement credit against travel purchases made in the previous 90 days.

I am booked with Aer Lingus from Frankfurt to Minneapolis via Dublin. What are my baggage allowances (weight and dimensions) and are they the same for both legs of the trip and each way?

Hi Dafydd,

You should be able to bring 1 personal item, 1 carry-on item, and 1 checked bag weighing up to 50 lbs (23 kgs).

For Aer Lingus, I have a bag that fits the dimensions if put on its side. Will that be acceptable, or will they make me check it? Also, for my personal item, I have a backpack that may be too tall. However, if I don’t over-pack it and it can roll down will they accept it?

Hi Kelsey,

Yes, I would say that both of your bags should be fine and I don’t foresee them giving you any issues. Safe travels!

So my carry-on is about 4 cm too fat but it is smaller than all the other dimension requirements, and then I have a backpack for my personal item which will be smaller than all the dimension requirements. Do you think they’ll accept my carry-on or make me check it?

Hi Mary Rose,
That will depend on the gate agent for your flight. If that person is a stickler about bag size they may make you check it. However, that’s a pretty small size difference so I would think you have a good chance that you will be able to carry it on with no problem.

We are flying on a Business class ticket on British Air to London then on to Shannon on an Y-Economy class ticket on flight operated by Aer Lingus. All book through Brititsh Air. Will we be allowed to take our carryon bags from the BA flight on with us on the AL flight? We will have a tight connection.

There appears to be a weight differential when you move from BA to AL, so I would just make sure your carry-on abides by the AL policy to avoid having it checked. I do not believe your class affects your carry-on allowance on either airline. Thanks for reading!

Using an Avios Award of 4000 from EDI to DUB in coach on AerLingus (regional Emerald). The booking is through Avios, not through AerLingus. Baggage allowance (checked and carry-on) and seat options is unclear in the PNR on AerLingus, and not clear with Avios. Where are these these award booking policies clarified? What are my baggage and seat options? The award is not managed online with AerLingus.
