In comparison to other airlines, AeroMexico has a pretty straightforward policy when it comes to baggage fees. It’s helpful to note that if your route does require payment, the first two bags are relatively inexpensive and you’ll definitely save a bit of cash by paying at the time of booking (rather than at the airport).

AeroMexico Carry-On Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
1 standard carry-on bag: FREE

Size Restrictions

  • Personal: Size not disclosed, but Aeromexico refers to items such as briefcases, purses, computers, umbrellas, fanny packs
  • Standard: 21.5 x 15.7 x 10 inches (55 x 40 x 25 cm)
  • Weight: 22 pounds (10 kg) maximum for both pieces combined

Lap Infant Carry-On Policy

  • 2 items are permitted free of charge, including a stroller, bassinet, or diaper bag.

Stroller Check Policy

  • Each customer is allowed one stroller to be checked at gate free of charge.
  • International Destinations: one additional piece of checked luggage besides the stroller or bassinet is permitted, not to exceed 50 pounds (23 kg) in weight or 45 inches (115 cm) in size.

AeroMexico Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must adhere to max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

Do you know if this changed from 2018? I was told my Delta Platnum AmEx did not count and was made to pay a baggage fee for my checked bag. Please share the link where you found this confirmation please so I may show it if asked again on my trip Saturday. Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Sonja and thanks for your question. Delta American Express cards only waive the fee for baggage on Delta flights, not for partner airlines such as AeroMexico.

I have my flight booked, but it is not letting me pay for baggage. Where can I pay for my bags?

Jarrod West

March 26, 2021

Hi Jenny,

You should be able to log in to your booking through the Aeromexico website or mobile app to purchase baggage. If neither of those seems to be working then you can contact their customer service team directly. Thanks for reading!

The 158 cm (62 inch) dimension, is that including the handles?

Catherine Luther

April 17, 2019

Hi Matthew, airlines typically include any handles or wheels in their maximum dimensions. Although it doesn’t look like Aeromexico states this specifically on their website, you must be prepared to pay a fee if your baggage exceeds this.

How big is the fee for trying to bring on a carry on that’s technically too big but fits overhead just fine (backpackers backpack)?

Jarrod West

January 16, 2020

Hi Stephanie,

If AeroMexico requires you to check the bag then you may be charged $30 for doing do.

Aeromexico is denying the 1 free baggage for Sky Team Elite members from Mexico City to L.A.. They tried to claim that it is only for Sky Team Elite Plus. Only after fighting for 20 minutes was I able to get an “exception”.

June 17, 2019

Hi Roberto,

That is odd considering it is on Aeromexixo’s baggage page under the section “Additional Baggage for Club Premier Members and Aeromexico Cardholders.”

What is it the difference between basic economy and economy flight? I need to know about the baggage
Thanks

Catherine Luther

June 19, 2019

Hi Pao,

Basic economy is a cheaper fare that offers passengers a standard economy seat but with carry-on luggage only (no checked luggage). Passengers also can’t choose a seat, this is randomly allocated by AeroMexico so there is no guarantee companions will be sitting together. Standard economy comes with 1 or 2 checked bags (not including routes to the United States where checked baggage must be purchased) and passengers can select seats.

Next week, I am flying from London Heathrow to Mexico City and then on to a connection from Mexico to Guatemala. The only hand luggage I will have is a guitar in a soft case – will I be charged extra to carry this item on to the plane?

Catherine Luther

October 15, 2019

Hi,

Aeromexico says “Each passenger is allowed one (1) musical instrument on board as a “carry-on” item, so long as they do not exceed the maximum linear surface area (length + width + height) 45 inches. Subject to space restrictions.”

November 04, 2019

Hi, My flight is Brazil > Mexico > London (return)

I see from the information on checked baggage that the allowance from Brazil > Mexico is 2 x 23kg bags but from Mexico > Europe the allowance is only 1 x 23kg.

Can you please tell me what my allowance would be for the whole journey?

Thanks in advance, Matt

Catherine Luther

November 05, 2019

Hi Matt,

AeroMexico says:
“If your connection lasts more than 24 hours, the baggage allowance from your origin to your destination does not apply. Two allowances apply, the one from the origin to Mexico and the one from Mexico to the destination. The only exception is trips to/from Brazil, where the allowance from origin to destination applies even if the connection lasts more than 24 hours.”

As you’re flying from Brazil, your baggage allowance from Brazil would apply to the entire journey (providing you booked the flights on 1 ticket).

Adriana

Hi. I am purchasing the Basic Economy ticket from Rhode Island to Puerto Vallarta. Can I take a carry on (21×15.7×10) for the overhead bin and a large purse (22x14x9) for under the seat? Thank you.

Catherine Luther

November 10, 2019

Hi Adriana,

The size you mentioned for your standard carry-on adheres to the Aeromexico’s maximum size dimension. You handbag exceeds the length by half a cm which I’m sure would be fine, but as we’re not Aeromexico we can’t confirm this for you 100%. The airline may have bag sizers at the airport that will have a set length your bag needs to fit into; however, if your handbag is soft sided not rigid, then it is likely you would be able to squeeze this in.

In December, My husband and I are flying first class (Premier) from SEA to PTY on Aero Mexico flights booked with Delta Skymiles. My husband has Delta Diamond status and typically we can check each (3) bags for up to 70lbs. Does AM match baggage status for Skyteam partners?

Catherine Luther

November 10, 2019

Hi Tammey,

AeroMexico allows an extra piece for Skyteam Elite and Elite Plus members but there is no mention on their website whether they status match for Skyteam partners. You’ll need to give the airline a call to confirm.

It is likely that you will have to re-check your bag through security when you arrive in Mexico City. Often times this will be an expedited lane for those who are traveling onwards.

Catherine Luther

December 23, 2019

Hi Linda,

If you have booked a basic fare, then no baggage would be included and would need to be purchased either online be logging in to your booking or at the airport. The maximum size for a single piece is 62″ (158cm).

Victor

Catherine Luther

February 11, 2020

Hi Nynke,

Aeromexico permits 1 carry-on item and 1 personal item in the cabin. Each piece may measure 55 x 40 x 25 cm and the combined weight of both pieces must not exceed 10 kg.

Hi CS,

Please be advised that we are not, nor do we represent AeroMexico. We are Upgraded Points, an informational website that provides helpful travel information.

With that said, no you cannot late book a specific seat with a basic fare on AeroMexico.

I plan to fly from Canada to Cabo with a layover in Mexico City of 2 hours, then connecting with Aerolitoral (a airlines that is owned by Aeromexico). I will pay for excess baggage for a surfboard. Any idea if I will have to pay for my surfboard again with the connecting flight of Aerolitoral?
Many Thanks!

Hi Etienne,

Were your tickets purchased together under one itinerary? If so you likely will not have to pay twice. But you might if they were purchased separately.

I’d I book a “Premier Class” seat, it appears as I’m able to check 2 bags for free. If I check 3 and have a AMEX Platinium card (from the US), and have a Aeromexico account will the third bag be free, or do I need a “Mexican Amex Platinium” card to make it free?

Jarrod West

June 23, 2020

Hi Alice,

The US version of the Amex Platinum card does not offer any sort of free baggage benefits, so you would need to pay extra for the 3rd bag.

I need to know exactly what I need to take my mother’s ashes through Aeroméxico. Is it just the death certificate and cremation certificate? Because I’m flying from Tijuana to Guadalajara and I want to have the correct paperwork before I even fly since I live in California but am traveling from Tijuana, Mexico.

June 24, 2020

Hi Leticia,

I’m very sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. Please accept my condolences on behalf of the entire Upgraded Points team. In order to travel with your mother’s ashes, you should need a copy of the death certificate and a copy of the Disposition Permit. This website provides some more details should you need them.

Hi. I’m flying from Mexico City to Merida, I have booked Premier class and have two bags. Does each bag have to equal to 70lbs? Or can each bag be 70lbs?

Jarrod West

June 25, 2020

Hi Robyn,

Each bag should be allowed to be up to 70lbs. Thanks for reading!

I have 2 bags weighing 70 lbs each. How much will that be?

Jarrod West

July 09, 2020

Hi Wendy,

Could you tell me where you are flying to/from, and what class you will be flying in? Both of those factors determine a person’s baggage allowance and any additional charges.

Hello, I am flying from Toronto > Mexico > Brazil. Then on the way back Brazil > Mexico > Toronto. All have been purchased in one ticket.

However, from Canada to Mexico we are not allowed to bring any checked bags, but from Mexico to Brazil we are allowed to bring one checked bag. If I bring two bags with the intent of having them checked, will I have to pay for 1 bag or 2 bags? Will it be the same for the round trip or will it change depending on my origin/destination?

I am worried since I am traveling across the hemisphere and depending on how things go I would have to end up paying way more money than I expected for a flight ticket, which would make me hesitant to work with the company again in the future. Thank you.

Hi Josh,

Please be advised that we do not represent AeroMexico, but I am happy to help with your question. For this route, if you check two bags from Toronto to Mexico you should need to pay $30 for the first bag and $65 for the second – for a total of $95. From Mexico to Brazil you would just need to pay $30 since once checked bag is already included. This would bring the total to $125. You would be charged this on the way back as well, assuming you check two bags again.

Hi, we are traveling from Hermosillo to Mexico City with Economy seating. We are traveling with a toddler. Do we have to pay extra to have my husband or I sit next to her? Or will we be placed next to each other since she is a toddler?
Thanks for your help!

Jarrod West

August 24, 2020

Hi Adriana,

According to AeroMexico’s policy, you would have to pay to make sure that you and your husband get to sit together. Thanks for reading!

I have booked a Basic Fare flight London – Bogota. Does this include 2 pieces of cabin luggage or only 1? Also, I have paid for 1 checked piece of luggage but I am considering adding a 2nd checked piece of luggage but I can’t see how to can do this online. How much would it cost me to add a 2nd piece of checked luggage?
Thank you!

Jarrod West

October 19, 2020

Hi Claire,

In terms of cabin lugggae, you should be permitted to bring 1 personal item and 1 carry-on piece of luggage. If you’re not able to purchase extra luggage on the website, you should be able to do so by calling the customer service team at 1-(800) 237-6639. The charge for an extra bag should be $60 for your route.

Hi Veronica. Here is a link to the State Department website that gives all the information. It states (if you’re eligible for entry) that a PCR and/or serology negative test is acceptable.

I would like to buy an Aeromexico flight to Cancun (domestic). I m a Skyteam elite plus member. If I buy a basic fare is 1 bag included for free with my status?

Hi Gianluca,

Yes, you should be able to bring 1 bag free thanks to your Skyteam status.

Hello, were you able to get one checked bag free in basic fare with your elite plus benefits? The AM website is confusing and suggests that they do not allow the 1 extra bag for basic fares even for elite plus members

I booked an award ticket on Delta from BOI to MEX. I guess at LAX we change to AeroMexico. After finishing the reservation, it said we couldn’t check any bags. I didn’t see that listed anywhere when I was booking. I have not been able to get a hold of Delta. Have been on the phone for 2 hours and 40 minutes. Not sure why anyone would want to book a ticket all the way to MEX with no bags allowed. Does this mean that there is no way to check any baggage? Can it be rebooked in a higher class of service? Very frustrating.

Jarrod West

May 14, 2021

Hi Matthew,

You should be able to manage your booking through the Delta website or mobile app and add baggage to your itinerary. If neither of those options works, you can also contact their customer support team and they can add any baggage you need to your reservation.

What size does the checked luggage need to be? Because I have light but bulky stuff, flowers, decorations, and some stuffed animals. Thanks.

All checked bags must adhere to max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm).

If I have a 6 hour layover will I have to pay for baggage a second time?

Hi Anonymous,

If your entire trip was booked on the same itinerary, then no, you should not need to pay for your baggage a second time on your layover. Safe travels!

Yes, you should be able to bring a carry-on bag, but will not be allowed to bring any checked luggage. Safe travels!

We are flying Aeromexico from Cancun to Cabo with a 55 minute layover in Mexico City. I need to check a bag and I read that they do not transfer bags for you. What is the process for getting your checked bags and re-checking them? Or will they transfer the bags for you since the flights are within Mexico and not to the US??
I am worried that the time it takes to get that bag from the carousel and re-check it and go through security again (is that even the process) will take too long and I am starting to get extremely nervous as the flight is in less than two weeks and there is no way I can get everything into a carry-on and keep it under 22lbs.
We are Americans but will have already been in Cancun for a week when we fly to Cabo with the short layover in MEX. Has anyone done this or can anyone provide insight? Thank you in advance!

Jarrod West

December 02, 2021

Hi Kylie,

As far as I know, if your trip is booked under the same itinerary with Aeromexico the entire way, then they definitely should transfer your checked bags for your through to your final destination.

I am traveling from BJX-MEX-JFK on AM, booked in AM Plus via Delta. I am diamond with Delta. How many bags can I check for free and what will the cost be for additional checked bags? Thank you.

Jarrod West

December 29, 2021

Hi Nancy,

Since you’re a Skyteam Elite Plus member, you should be able to bring a 3 checked bags for free. Beyond that the cost should be $180 each.

Nancy

December 30, 2021

Thanks so much! But just to confirm, I won’t be limited by the AM policy, which seems to be much more stringent. Even with elite plus I had read somewhere that it follows the airline policy + 1 add’l bag. So in AM plus I don’t have any free checked bags, then elite plus would get me 1? Is that not right? Appreciate it!

Jarrod West

December 30, 2021

Hi Nancy,

Ahh, I see what you mean. Yes, you’re correct that ticket doesn’t include a standard checked bag, so with your SkyTeam status, you would be able to bring 1 checked bag for free.

Hi. I’m a SkyTeam Elite+ member and recently took an Aeromexico flight from MEX-AUS, checking in at MEX I was able to check my 1st bag for free by just asking at the counter and showing my Elite+ card, but on my return trip AUS-MEX, the check-in staff were trying to charge me 30dlls for my bag, I had to argue a bit with the staff and told them I was Elite+, it seemed the staff didn’t know how to apply that benefit when checkin in. (They asked for my MEX-AUS boarding pass and my baggage tag), after 15 min and 3 different agents they added my bag for free.
I wasn’t sure why they couldn’t easily just add the bag as I had no problems in the past with other itineraries, so I started to search into Aeromexico baggage policies and found that SkyTeam benefits are not applicable on the basic and classic fares, which is very confusing in my opinion – staff didn’t know. Another thing I found is that the free bag rule changes when the flight is marketed by another airline even if it’s operated by AM, so booking the same itinerary through Delta would allow me to use the SkyTeam E+ benefits for the free bag, am I missing something?
