Curious: Which OTAs offer a hold without immediate ticketing?

Hi Sven,
To my knowledge, only Hopper allows this.

Hi Vinda,
As far as I am aware, Egypt Air does not allow ticket holds.

Hi Jarrod,
Qantas airlines is currently denying our refund despite the booking being made directly on the Qantas US site from Australia (subjected to US terms and conditions and paid in US dollars). The flight was departing from JFK, the flight was made months in advance and cancelled within 24 hours. Qantas has put their own terms and conditions on these cancellations saying that we are not eligible for a refund as only “Customers who purchase a ticket in the United States may cancel their reservation and refund ticket without charge within 24 hours of ticketing when purchase is one week or more prior to departure.” Are they allowed to do this or does what the DOT 24 hr rule stand regardless of what the airline says.

This is incorrect for Cathay. I made a booking with the understanding that the hold my fare would be deducted from the final ticket cost. That is, I paid a hold my fare fee and booked within the 72 hour period and was charged the hold my fare fee – it is non refundable whether you book the ticket or not which is unfair. This article is therefore incorrect for cathay.

Hi Jarrod, Do you know if American Airlines allows “unlimited” Holds for a ticket. In other words, how many times can I Hold a ticket before I collect enough air miles to purchase it? Thanks.

Hi Janet,
AA only offers holds on select flights, but there shouldn’t be a limit to the number of times you can hold the ticket. However, it costs money to put a ticket on hold so this likely would not be an optimal strategy.

Hi Jarrod, Happy to see this site. Hawaiian Air always had an up to 7 day res hold with small payment up to 7 days. Just booked with them and no “Hold” offered. I had to pay full fare w/24 refund if needed.
Here’s what HA has posted: “Can I still place a Fare Hold? As of April 7, 2023, our Fare Hold product is temporarily unavailable. However, we continue to offer refundable fare options, no change fees on Main Cabin and First/Business Class seats, and our 24-hour cancellation policy.”
—————————
Yet this is what Dept of Transportation shows today, 6/18/23, online:
“Luckily for all travelers, federal regulation set by the Department of Transportation requires that airlines must let travelers hold a reservation at the quoted fare for 24 hours without payment, or allow a purchased reservation to be canceled within 24 hours without penalty and with a full refund to the original form …”
Is HA allowed to go against what a federal regulation from DOT states?
Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Roberta – if Hawaiian is offering the 24-hour cancellation policy, that meets the DOT requirement. We will update our article to reflect that Hawaiian has discontinued its Fare Hold service. Thanks for reading!
