If you’re a Marriott Bonvoy loyalist, perhaps you’ve become savvy at earning lots of Marriott Bonvoy points, but even seasoned members might welcome an earnings refresher!

One thing’s for certain: when it comes to hotel loyalty points, more is better. With that philosophy in mind, we’re going to take a look at dozens of ways we all can earn more Marriott Bonvoy points.

Marriott Bonvoy points are valuable since they can be redeemed for free hotel/resort stays, room upgrades, discounts on room rates, vacation packages, car rentals, gift cards, donations to charity, transfers to airline partners, and more!

In this article, we’ll look at a multitude of ways you can earn all the Marriott Bonvoy points you desire. Let’s get started.

Sign Up for Marriott Bonvoy

Before you can start earning points you’ll need to join Marriott Bonvoy. Make note of your new membership number so that you’ll receive credit for your stays and any other points-earning opportunities.

1. Welcome Bonuses and Spending on Marriott Bonvoy-branded Credit Cards

Chase and American Express both issue Marriott Bonvoy-earning personal and business credit cards. You’ll start earning Marriott Bonvoy points immediately on every purchase, and qualify for a welcome bonus once minimum spending requirements are met, normally within the first 3 months after card approval.

Welcome bonuses are the fastest way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points, but there are plenty of ongoing earning options that make it smart to have at least 1 Marriott Bonvoy-branded card in your wallet if you’re a Marriott loyalist.

You’ll continue to earn, during and beyond the welcome bonus, for every purchase made on a Marriott Bonvoy-branded card and elevated earnings on bonus categories that vary by card.

Here are some snapshots of current welcome bonuses and earning categories for several of the most popular Marriott Bonvoy-branded cards.

Bottom Line: Spending on Marriott Bonvoy credit cards and earning the associated introductory welcome bonuses are the fastest ways to earn Marriott Bonvoy points.

2. Transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy

One way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is by transferring your Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned from several Chase credit cards. The transfer is simple, has a 1:1 transfer ratio, and can take up to 2 days.

The transfer is not an awesome value for your Ultimate Rewards points — but you might find value in transferring points to use for an upgraded room, or if you find a PointSavers rate. You might also find value when booking 5 consecutive award nights by getting the fifth night free.

The following Chase credit cards allow you to transfer Ultimate Rewards Points directly:

While the Chase Freedom Flex℠, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, and Ink Business Cash® Credit Card earn Ultimate Rewards, these cards do not allow direct transfers to Marriott Bonvoy. You can, however, transfer your Ultimate Rewards points earned on these cards first to one of the premium Chase cards listed above and then to Marriott Bonvoy.

3. Refer-a-Friend Bonus Rewards (Chase)

You can refer friends for Chase credit cards and earn up to 100,000 points per year. To see if your card is eligible, visit the Refer-a-Friend website and enter your last name, ZIP code, and the last 4 digits of your credit card number.

Marriott Bonvoy-branded Chase card referrals will earn Marriott Bonvoy points and Ultimate Rewards-earning Chase cards will earn Ultimate Rewards that can then be transferred to Marriott Bonvoy.

4. Transfer Amex Membership Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy

Use any of our recommended Amex credit cards to use Marriott Bonvoy as an Amex transfer partner. As with Chase transfers, this is not a high-value transfer option compared to other Amex partners, however, there are promotions where you can receive up to 50% more in value when making a transfer.

Each Membership Rewards point converts to 1 Marriott Bonvoy point, and transfers are almost instant.

Here are some examples of the best personal Amex cards for earning Membership Rewards points:

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 125k (or 150k) points with the Amex Platinum. The current public offer is 80,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Bottom Line: Membership Rewards points are valuable because the points can be transferred to several travel partners to receive the highest redemption rate possible. To learn more about the best ways to redeem Membership Rewards points, we have some great ideas for you.

5. Refer-a-Friend Bonus Rewards (American Express)

Log in to the American Express site to refer someone you know and receive rewards points. Image Credit: American Express

If you currently have a Marriott Bonvoy-branded credit card issued by American Express, you can also refer a friend to apply for a card and earn Marriott Bonvoy points once they’re approved. If you have an Amex Membership Rewards-earning card you will earn Membership Rewards for your referral that can then be transferred to Marriott Bonvoy.

Just log in to your online American Express credit card account and select the method you want to use to invite your referral.

You can have American Express send an email, post on your Facebook page, use Twitter, or copy your referral link and send an email of your own.

6. Base Points and Bonus Points for Stays at Marriott Hotels & Resorts

Marriott has a broad selection of properties where you can earn, and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points. Image Credit: Marriott

Did you know you can earn points without using a Marriott Bonvoy-branded credit card to earn Marriott Bonvoy points when staying at any Marriott-family property?

Marriott Bonvoy members earn 10 Marriott Bonvoy points for every $1 spent on qualifying purchases made at any of the core 25 Marriott properties listed above, regardless of which credit card you use (5 points per $1 at Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, Element properties, and Homes & Villas by Marriott). You can also stay at extended-stay properties, such as Marriott Executive Apartments, to earn 2.5 Marriott Bonvoy points per $1 spent.

In addition to the base points earned when staying at Marriott collection properties, elite members receive bonus points.

For example, a Platinum Elite member would receive a 50% bonus for a total 15 Marriott Bonvoy points per $1 spent at any of the 25 core Marriott collection properties!

Elite LevelBonus Marriott Bonvoy Points Earned
Silver Elite10%
Gold Elite25%
Platinum Elite50%
Titanium Elite
Titanium Elite with Ambassador
75%

Hot Tip: You can triple dip on Marriott Bonvoy points when staying at Marriott-affiliated properties. You’ll receive points for using your branded credit card, base points in the Marriott Bonvoy program for your stay, and an additional percentage bonus if you have elite status

7. Reward a Friend, Earn Marriott Bonvoy Points

When you tell your friends about the Marriott Bonvoy program and they stay at a Marriott property, you’ll earn Marriott Bonvoy points. Be sure to have your friend sign up for the Marriott Bonvoy program before staying.

Here’s how the Reward a Friend program works:

  • Send invitations to your friends.
  • They receive 2,000 points per stay, up to 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.
  • You receive 2,000 points for each time they stay, up to 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for a maximum of 5 referrals per year. That’s 50,000 extra Marriott Bonvoy points!

8. Earn Rewards for Purchasing Gift Cards

Purchase Marriott Bonvoy gift cards with your Marriott Bonvoy credit card at participating Marriott properties and receive 6 points per dollar spent. Marriott Bonvoy gift cards make great gifts for weddings, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, or graduates who will be traveling.

Hot Tip: Check your Amex Offers frequently for additional earnings or savings at Marriott properties, which may include gift card purchases.

9. Welcome Gift Points

When you check in to a Marriott collection property, you’ll be offered the option to receive welcome bonus points.

Gold Elite members or higher can select 500 to 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (depending on the property) in lieu of breakfast or a welcome amenity.

10. Earn When Booking Marriott Bonvoy Tours & Activities

Marriott Bonvoy Tours & Activities is a special program offering hundreds of special activities and experiences chosen specifically for Marriott Bonvoy members. Select from gourmet cooking lessons, a riverboat jazz brunch in New Orleans, or perhaps a New York City speakeasy walking tour.

Marriott Bonvoy Tours & Activities offers experiences at destinations all over the world — best of all, you’ll be earning at least 5x bonus Marriott Bonvoy points for each $1 spent on Marriott Bonvoy Tours & Activities!

11. Get Rewarded for Your Events

With the Marriott Bonvoy Events program, you’ll earn Marriott Bonvoy points for booking your meeting, wedding, or other special events at a Marriott property.

You can earn 2 points per dollar spent on eligible room, food, beverages, and audio/visual charges for a total of up to 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for each event. Titanium Elite members can earn a maximum of 105,000 points per event.

You can also earn Elite qualifying nights for your event booking.

12. Sign Up for Bonus Rewards at Promotion Central

When Marriott Bonvoy runs a promotion, you can earn extra Marriott Bonvoy points for your stays. If you’re a member of Marriott Bonvoy, you should receive an email asking you to register whenever there is a new promotion.

You can always check out Marriott Bonvoy’s Promotion Central to sign in and see if there is a new promotion you may have missed.

13. Book Marriott Vacation Packages

Vacations by Marriott runs ongoing specials that offer bonus Marriott Bonvoy points for booking vacation packages in addition to the points earned on the purchase price.

As an example, one recent promotion offered 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for booking a 4-night stay or longer at a Westin property. You can check out the Vacations by Marriott site to see the current bonus point specials.

14. Earn Marriott Bonvoy Points for Car Rentals Through Hertz

Marriott Bonvoy partners with Hertz to offer Marriott Bonvoy members discounted rental rates and unlimited miles.

Members enjoy the benefits of reserving now, paying later, and even canceling their reservation for free. Use code 154080 during booking for discounts and benefits.

Best of all, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn up to 2,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for Hertz car rentals of 2 days or more.

15. Book Your Cruise Through Marriott Cruises

With over 500 trained cruise experts on staff and a 110% money-back price guarantee, Marriott Bonvoy has a dedicated Marriott Cruises website.

Receive special pricing, bonus amenities, and up to 3 Marriott Bonvoy points for every $1 you spend at Marriott Cruises. Earn even more (up to 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points!) when you book a balcony or suite stateroom.

Hot Tip: If you’ve got plenty of Marriott Bonvoy points, you may consider booking your cruise with points instead of cash (however, you won’t earn points when you do this).

16. Your “Identity Can Earn Marriott Bonvoy Points

If you’re a member of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Identity rewards program, you can transfer loyalty points to Marriott Bonvoy. You must contact the Cosmopolitan Identity Program to do so.

The following conversion rates apply:

Identity → Marriott Bonvoy
25,000 → 20,000
10,000 → 8,000
2,500 → 2,000
500 → 400

17. Check Out Marriott Vacation Club Ownership

Many vacationers enjoy the convenience of owning a Marriott Vacation Club timeshare, with access to over 70 Marriott Vacation Club resorts, as well as access to over 4,000 Marriott properties and 3,000 affiliated resorts via the Marriott Vacation Club Destinations Exchange Program,

And for those who don’t mind signing up to visit one of their properties and listening to their presentation, one could earn a stash of Marriott Bonvoy points.

18. Purchasing Marriott Bonvoy Points

If you’re just short of enough points for a particular redemption option, you may want to purchase a small number of Marriott Bonvoy points to top off your account.

Another reason you might purchase points is to keep your points from expiring since Marriott Bonvoy points expire after 24 months of inactivity on your account.

Members may normally purchase a maximum of 50,000 points per calendar year in increments of 1,000 at a rate of $12.50 per 1,000 points, but watch for promotions where points are discounted and limits are increased.

As a bonus to whatever earnings you’d get through your credit card, you can also double-dip and earn Marriott Bonvoy points when you link your Marriott Bonvoy account to your Uber account.

Members will earn:

  • 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per $1 spent on Uber Eats deliveries to U.S. Marriott properties with a minimum subtotal of $25 (or 2 points per $1 for non-hotel deliveries)
  • 3 Marriott Bonvoy points per $1 spent on Uber XL, Comfort, Black, and Black SUV rides in the U.S.

20. Eat Around Town

Join Eat Around Town and link your Marriott Bonvoy-branded card to earn up to 6 points per dollar spent at participating restaurants.

Everything Else You Need To Know

The Marriott Bonvoy program allows you to select whether you want to earn miles or rewards points for your purchases. To make your selection, log in to your Marriott Bonvoy account and update your online profile.

If you do not make a selection, the program will default to earning Marriott Bonvoy points.

Once you’ve earned plenty of Marriott Bonvoy points, you’ll probably want to know the best way to redeem your points. Check out our guide on the best ways to redeem Marriott Bonvoy points for the most value.

Final Thoughts

With so many ways to earn Marriott Bonvoy points, you should be able to accumulate enough to easily cover an annual vacation or several weekend getaways each year just from everyday spending.

The best value for your Marriott Bonvoy points will normally be for free hotel nights, plus you’ll receive even more value when you utilize the fifth consecutive award night free benefit.

If you’re a traveler whose hotel program choice is Marriott Bonvoy, partnering a branded card with your Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program membership can be very rewarding, regardless of which Marriott Bonvoy-branded card you select.

@Jennifer Thanks for catching this! The post has been updated accordingly.

I am a platinum for life SPG member. The new combined program is a disaster for me. My CC points earned on spending is cut by a third. The no housekeeping bonus is cut by 2 thirds.
The hurdles to find and book a room online used to be just a couple of clicks, now it is a much more confusing and time consuming process. For instance: On SPG you click on a city in which you wish to stay and you get 1 screen with a list of different pricing options all together. Now, with Marriott, you get a list of 100 hotels and each hotel has a best price listed. The best price is always advance purchase which I don’t care about. So I have to click and click and go back and forth making for a very frustrating experience. Even tho’ I’m Platinum, I’ll find myself going to Hyatt and Priceline to avoid the hassle of Marriott’s reservation site. Thanks.

Thanks for your comments, Mark. I am a long term SPG elite member as well (not Platinum lifetime like you, however) and I have experienced similar frustrations with the earnings, the booking process, the awards program and other changes. I have started limiting the brands in my search on the Marriott site to just my preferences; it helps narrow the choices. The booking site still has other problems that I’m confident will be worked out over time but for now, it’s tough to deal with. I feel your pain although I’m hopeful the IT problems will diminish soon.

I believe as of December, 2018, you can no longer redeem Diner’s Club Rewards points for Marriott points.

January 08, 2019

Hi Steve and thanks for the update. Although it was possible when this post was written, you can no longer transfer from Diner’s Club. Appreciate the information and I will update the post.

Hi. I tried to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to Marriott Bonvoy points and couldn’t find any way to do it. I called Marriott Bonvoy and they said only Chase/Bonvoy affiliated cards can transfer. Is there a way you can tell me how to transfer that maybe they don’t know about. Thanks.

Christine Krzyszton

March 20, 2019

Hello Maytee. If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred®, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, you can log in to your Chase Ultimate Rewards account (chase.com/ultimaterewards) and go to “Transfer to Travel Partners”, then select Marriott Bonvoy. As mentioned in the article, if you have the Chase Freedom®, Chase Freedom Unlimited℠, or the Ink Business Cash℠ Credit Card, you cannot transfer Ultimate Rewards Points directly to Marriott Bonvoy, you must first transfer to one of the premium Chase credit cards listed. You can transfer points between cards also by logging in to your Ultimate Rewards account. Hope this helps.

Do you know if you get the normal 10X points per dollar when spending on Vacations by Marriott packages? Does the 6X bonus points from co-branded credit cards apply to these vacation packages as well?

Christine Krzyszton

April 05, 2019

Hi Jon. Thank you for the questions. The 10X points per dollar is valid only on purchases at Marriott properties through the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. According to the terms and conditions on the co-branded Marriott Bonvoy cards, 6X points earnings include, “purchases charged directly with participating Marriott Bonvoy properties (excluding home share properties), standalone Marriott branded retail establishments, and Marriott branded online stores (including online purchases of Marriott branded gift cards) that, in each case, are wholly owned or managed by Marriott International, Inc and its affiliates. Eligible purchases means purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits.”

Dan

April 22, 2019

I recently got a Marriott credit card. I am thinking of buying a gift card for a celebration. Do I need to buy a gift card at a Marriott facility to earn 6X points?
I am planning to buy using https://gifts.marriott.com/.

Christine Krzyszton

April 23, 2019

Hello Dan. The 6X points is earned on purchases at Marriott properties so you would need to purchase the Marriott gift card there. I actually purchased a Marriott gift card at Fairfield Inn and received the multiple points. The online gift card purchase will not receive the multiple points as a fulfillment service manages those purchases.

Did anyone else seem to fall just short of lifetime titanium elite when the merge happened and now find themselves with no way to EVER earn that status? Titanium Elite lifetime status was only offered in the year of the merge (2018) so those of us that stayed exclusively with Marriott for years and years (20 to be exact) and were nearly at the point of earning the highest lifetime category available (Platinum before the merge), now have NO WAY to EVER earn Titanium Elite lifetime status? So it’s back to 75 nights per year in order to get the same benefit you were already getting and were just about to reach lifetime on? I have emailed BONVOY a bunch and just get the runaround. Anyone understand the logic behind this?

Deann

May 15, 2019

Hi can you tell me what bonus nights are? My account shows 23 nights stayed and 17 bonus nights for a total of 40 nights. So I need 10 more nights by the end of this calendar year to remain Platinum? I’m confused as to how I’m earning “bonus nights”- is it through using my Marriott card?

Hi Deann. You receive 15 bonus nights towards elite status each year on your Marriott card. The other 2 could be rollover nights from last year, from a promotion, or from rewarding events. These all count towards elite status.

Victoria

June 22, 2019

I recently stayed at the Marriott Courtyard at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida for cancer treatment for 6weeks plus. I opted for all the point rewards for Green Housekeeping, buying food, special promotions offered at the time. At the end of my stay, my MarriotRewards were 44,000.

Recently, I switched over to BonVoy and when I logged in it showed only 38,000 points. I called and your associates told me it was correct. Then I had trouble logging into my BonVoy account – it locked me out for 5 days. Even with multiple calls to your customer service they weren’t able to help me get in but they did inform me I had only 36,000(!) Points.🙄 I have lost 8,000 points and haven’t used the account for anything yet.

I am now able to travel a year after my Cancer Treatment – I’m in remission. The customer service team can’t seem to find the points anywhere and I’m upset. They seemed to have vanished into thin air without a trace… to say I’m disappointed is no small statement as I am a new member. I hope someone can help.

Erin Miller

June 22, 2019

Hi Victoria, please be advised we are not Marriott Bonvoy. We are Upgraded Points, a website dedicated to publishing articles on points, miles, and award travel as well as other travel related pieces.

We’re sorry to hear you’re having difficulty with Marriott’s program but since we are not Marriott (nor are we affiliated with them in any way), we can’t assist you with this issue. We’re so happy to hear you’re in remission and wish you the best in your future travels and we truly hope Marriott can get this worked out for you.

If you haven’t, try tweeting them or leaving a comment on their FB – some big companies respond better to these social media platforms as they don’t love to see negative press publicized where other potential consumers can read it.

July 25, 2019

If I don’t use credit cards much and am just starting out earning Marriott points, should I purchase a pile of points to move up the levels quickly?

Christine Krzyszton

July 25, 2019

Hi Greg. Purchasing Marriott points is generally not good value and the points do not count toward Marriott Bonvoy elite status. However, having a Marriott branded credit card, even if you just use it when you occasionally stay at Marriott, will be the fastest way to accumulate points.

Dr FATIMA Habib

August 11, 2019

Hi . I would like to know if we still get points for dining at restaurants in the Marriott properties as non stay points which was the case with SPG ? So, points for spending in restaurants and bars without a stay.

Christine Krzyszton

August 11, 2019

Hello Dr Habib. It will, of course, depend on the card as to how many points you will earn. If restaurants are a bonus category on your Marriott branded card and the establishment has a merchant code that defines it as a restaurant, then you will earn the restaurant category point level.

Michael Simcox

August 15, 2019

It used to be that every $3,000 spend equaled one elite qualifying night. Is that still the case?

Christine Krzyszton

August 16, 2019

Hi Michael. The Marriott Bonvoy Premier credit card has this feature. However, this card is no longer available to new applicants.

You will not earn points if you paid for your reservation with points.

You can earn points if you use points for a night. I think it may depend on your status but I am Platinum elite and when using points they add “bonus points” into my account.

Christine Krzyszton

September 20, 2019

Hi Anthony. The points you’re referring to are probably welcome bonus points one can select when they check in. And yes, you are correct, you do receive these points when using points for a stay. Thanks for your input!

Does using my 7 nights package extend the life of my Marriott points? Thanks!

Michael McHugh

Hi Kay,

Yes. A 7 night package is considered a points redemption. Points redemptions are considered qualifying activity.

Hi John. According to the Vacation Club guide, you can exchange points by logging in to your account at My-vacationclub.com or by calling the Vacation Ownership Advisory Team at 888-682-4862. They can also give you the current conversion rate. December 11, 2019

Hello S K. I think you’re referring to spending on a Marriott-branded credit card and yes, hitting specific spending levels on certain cards can elevate your elite status. Alice

May 20, 2020

Can I register 2 Marriott credit cards to earn points on one Marriott Bonvoy rewards account?

Hi Alice. When you apply for a Marriott credit card, you will be asked for your Marriott Bonvoy rewards account number. The Marriott Rewards account name must match the name on the credit card. You can have 2 Marriott branded cards in your name and both can earn rewards to your account. You can also add an authorized user to your card and their purchases will earn rewards in your account. It is also possible to transfer rewards between accounts but there is a transfer fee.

James Robinson

March 31, 2022

I’m just getting started as a new Marriott Bonvoy member. What’s the best way for me to get points? I have tried getting Marriott cards but got denied. So should I purchase points and then book nights with points to earn points? Will that work? Or what should I do? Can someone plz gift me some points?

Christine Krzyszton

March 31, 2022

Hi James. Your best bet, without a Marriott credit card, is staying at Marriott properties. Be sure to register for any promotional offers and don’t forget to follow up and make sure the welcome bonuses you accepted at check-in post to your Marriott Rewards account after your stay (this is a known problem). Stays purchased with points do not earn Marriott Rewards points other than the welcome bonus (500 to 1,000 points depending on the brand). Also, go through the list in the article and review all activities that do not require a Marriott credit card, you may find a few other options. Thanks for reading James, and I hope you’re able to get a Marriott branded card in the near future.
