As one of the largest hotel chains in the world, IHG Hotels & Resorts gives you plenty of ways to earn valuable IHG One Rewards points. Once you earn those points, you’ll want to find some amazing redemption opportunities.

Let’s dive into some of the best award stay options your IHG One Rewards points provide.

How to Earn IHG One Rewards Points

The easiest way to earn tons of IHG One Rewards points is through your credit card spending, whether on a co-branded IHG card or a card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points that can be transferred to IHG.

IHG-Branded Credit Cards

IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card

You can earn IHG One Rewards points directly with the IHG Premier card, which earns up to 26 points per dollar at IHG properties, 5 points per $1 spent on purchases on travel, gas stations, and restaurants, and 3 points per $1 spent on all other purchases

Cardmembers receive complimentary IHG Rewards Platinum status and an annual reward night certificate that can be used at many IHG properties. We’ll discuss this benefit more in-depth later.

IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card

If you’re looking for a no annual fee credit card, you can also check out the IHG Traveler card that enables you to earn up to 17 points per dollar at IHG properties and 3x points on monthly bills, gas stations, and restaurants. Additionally, you will get complimentary IHG Silver Elite status for holding the IHG Traveler card.

And if you have either the IHG Premier card or the IHG Traveler card, you will get the fourth reward night free benefit, which allows you to get your fourth consecutive hotel night in a single reservation free when booking reward stays.

IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card

The new IHG Premier Business card is a great option for business owners who want IHG status since it comes with Platinum Elite status automatically. Some of the card’s other benefits include:

  • Earn up to 26 points total per $1 spent when you stay at an IHG hotel
  • Earn 5 points per $1 spent on travel, hotels, dining, gas, office supply stores, and social media and search engine advertising

IHG Brands and Categories

IHG currently offers 17 distinct brands. Image Credit: IHG

With 17 brands, plus a new partnership with Mr & Mrs Smith, that are bookable using IHG One Rewards points, you will always be able to find the type of hotel you prefer. Regent Hotels, acquired in 2018, is a luxury hotel group that is now available for award nights.

The luxury brand Six Senses is rolling out the ability to earn and redeem IHG points as part of its integration into IHG’s portfolio. Currently, there are a few properties that are eligible for IHG accruals and redemptions, and this list is expected to grow as the integration progresses.

Hot Tip: If you need a standard hotel with some basic amenities (perhaps a free breakfast buffet), you can book a Holiday Inn Express. But if you want to enjoy a few nights in luxury, try an InterContinental or Kimpton property.

IHG no longer has an award chart; instead, IHG has adopted variable award pricing, which means that award nights will vary in cost depending on several factors. These factors include what the cash rate is, when you’re booking, the seasonality of your stay, and much more.

To know how many IHG One Rewards points will be required per night, you’ll need to search for the hotel you’re interested in booking.

Those who hold the IHG Premier card or IHG Premier Business card will receive a reward night certificate on their account anniversary, which is valid for stays up to 40,000 points per night, but can be topped off with extra points.

Points & Cash Bookings

If you don’t have quite enough points to complete your booking or you want to stretch your points a little further, try a Points & Cash booking. Some properties provide several options for Points & Cash; some require more cash while others require more points.

Informative article Spencer. Brought me up the curve on a program I was not too familiar with. Using your Free Night at an InterContinental is the way to go.

What about Liverpool, NY staybridge suites for 15k? Near the big mall too.

Before transferring Chase UR points to IHG to book a specific hotel, check the Chase travel portal to see how many UR points it would cost if booking directly through Chase. If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, each point is worth 1.5 cents. The Intercontinental Hong Kong, which costs 70,000 IHG points, can be had for less than 30,000 Chase UR points.

Great article! Thanks.

I have a Chase Sapphire Reserve, but am considering IHG Chase with current sign up bonus of 125,000 miles. Worth it for the first year? Or just book through existing card?

Hi Jessica,

The IHG Premier card is definitely a great option if you frequent IHG hotels, especially since it gives you Platinum status and your 4th night free on award stays!

Thanks for reading!

This article needs tidying up. For example, offhand I can tell you that InterContinental Budapest is 40k points per night, not 35k. Additionally, if the IC Malta is category 8 and IC Porto is a category 9, how can they both be 45k? Same question for IC Porto and IC Moorea? Both are listed as cat 9 but the former is 45k while the latter is 50k.

Great information. I currently hold the IHG MasterCard and one cool benefit is the 4th night free which can be combined to 2 nights for an 8 night stay. 30000 points per night X *8 nights= 240000 Points Total -60000 (rebated) =180000 pt net.
Note that you need enough points for that 8 night stay and 2 points are credited back to your account.
Another person commented that he paid taxes on his annual free night yet I didn’t when I use mine at Crown Plaza near JFK airport but that night didn’t count point/ night wise for IHG status.

I just booked the Kimpton Tryon in Charlotte with my annual free night, but they also charged me tax. I was also surprised to see that their statement about award nights says ANY and does not mention the 40K max value. Rate Description: CHASE FREE NIGHT CERTIFICATES ARE AWARDED TO IHG REWARDS CLUB SELECT CREDIT CARDHOLDERS ON THEIR CARD MEMBERSHIP ANNIVERSARY DATE. THE CERTIFICATE IS VALID FOR 1 FREE NIGHT AT ANY IHG PROPERTY WORLDWIDE.

Hi Mel,

When did you sign up for the card? If the free night certificate was issued before May 1st of 2019, then that is why it was uncapped. All others after that should be capped at 40k.
